(ESP-ENG) Grandes hitos en la historia de la música // Great milestones in music history!
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
It's been a while since I've been here, but now we're back and we're here to do the only thing we know and like to do, talk about music and everything that surrounds it. There are many things that we can talk about but today I want to focus on something that has caught my attention since I started to think about it once and are those great events that changed the history of music, either by the echo they made, the trend that marked from it or because since that fact nothing would be the same. Throughout contemporary history there have been many events that have marked the course of music but today I will try to reduce that list to five knowing how difficult it will be.
Here we will talk about concerts, songs and presentations that were a before and after. Many times we do not dimension those facts and we may even think that they are not so influential but the reality is different, they were, are and will continue to be great moments that will remain in history. So without further ado, let's talk a little bit about all this history in music.
- El inicio de The Jackson 5 // The beginning of The Jackson 5
This presentation is vital because it is the one that would show us for the first time Michael Jackson and his brothers. It was back in the 70's when in this TV show the Jackson 5 made an appearance to present one of their greatest hits, "ABC". The thing is that nobody knew what this presentation would mean for them and for music and think about it, it was the first time people would see MJ sing on stage and as expected he was the one who stole all the attention. I have always liked the Jackson 5, I think they were the pioneers of the whole "Boys Band" concept and their songs and repertoire are still loved by many today. I put him on this list because the impact that Michael Jackson had on contemporary music is more than well known and evident and had it not been for this presentation, we probably wouldn't have known many of the things that happened later on.
- El nacimiento de MTV // MTV's birth
I think it's no secret what MTV meant for the development and promotion of music worldwide. Perhaps few people know it, but MTV in the eighties and nineties was known for being the center of music in the United States, it was the site or platform chosen by major record labels and bands to promote their songs and videos. The truth is that it was impressive how much this channel grew because in a short time it became a reference and vanguard musically speaking, it was a space dedicated entirely to music where in addition to videos we could know all the news that happened in it 24 hours a day. I watch MTV today and I can't help but feel sorry to see what it has become, a channel with garbage content everywhere you look and that due to the same advance of technology it will never be what it once was. MTV was a driving force for the young people of that time, including myself, to get to know music like never before and that for me was vital in the whole pop/rock music culture of those times and the ones to come.
- QUEEN en el Live Aid // QUEEN at Live Aid
QUEEN only needed a little over twenty minutes to give what was probably their most memorable performance in their career. This was a concert that was made in favor of the fight against hunger in Ethiopia in which greats such as U2, Led Zeppelin, The Who, among others were presented, it was Queen led by Freddie Mercury who undoubtedly stole the show. It must be said that this concert was one of their last performances and one that would forever mark the history of Queen. Being surrounded by more than 70 thousand people and having them all chanting your songs the way they did with the six songs they played was undoubtedly a vital milestone for the recent history of music. The "We are the Champions" along with the "Bohemiam Rapsody" of that concert were mythical and incomparable. It is on this list because of all that Queen meant for music and because it was, without a doubt, for me, one of the best I saw them.
- Madonna - Like A Virgin (Live MTV VMAs 1984)
Madonna is the queen of Pop for a reason and the beginning of that reign I would dare to think that it was with this presentation at the MTV VMas of 84. At that time she was not so well known in the music world, she was just starting to sound and with this performance was that her career was mounted on a rocket and took off to infinity. You have to take into account the context of the time, those were times where this type of presentations were "controversial" and more if you were a woman but as Madonna has always been irreverent that did not matter to her in the least and she went out on stage and gave it all. It obviously caused a lot of noise among conservative people but it was also a very big door that opened for other artists, especially women, to dare to speak and act without worrying about what they will say. Some may wonder why I put her on this list and I think that the visibility she brought about was of vital importance for what was to come in the following years. This brings me to the last presentation that would happen years ago but that as with Madonna would be a very important door...
- La irreverencia de Elvis Presley // - The irreverence of Elvis Presley
This was not the first time that Elvis appeared in this program but it was the first time that he did it without his guitar, but what does this have to do with it? - Well, being free from the constraints of playing a guitar on stage meant that he was free to move and dance as he pleased. In those times all those movements were frowned upon because it was a society which was governed by extremely conservative people who saw in this type of performances all kinds of immoralities. Fortunately that did not matter to Elvis because despite having the eyes of the people in power, he still made the presentation and won the affection and support of the people. Like Madonna, Presley was not the king of Rock & Roll yet but this performance would be the start of an impressive career. For me this was a milestone because it was an event that marked music forever, it was the first time Elvis was seen dancing and singing in such an energetic and "crazy" way and it was also something that would eventually be the springboard that would propel Presley's musical life to the places we already know.
Some bonuses I could mention could be Nirvana's Unplugged, one of the best in the history of that format and one of Kurt Cobain's last performances, and the Beatles' performance on the Ed Sullivan show, which would mark the beginning of the famous "British Invasion". There are many more but I think these are undoubtedly the most significant and important in history.
