(ESP-ENG) A Man Called Otto, the dangers of loneliness!
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
If there are actors for whom I would make an exception when watching a movie, one of them is undoubtedly Tom Hanks, but why do I say this? - Because of the kind of story this film is. When the official trailer came out and I saw it I have to confess that I didn't click immediately, for me it was the typical Sunday movie that you see when you have absolutely nothing else to see, I don't know, I guess that thought came out of those silly prejudices that one creates for free sometimes. The reality is that as I said I decided to see it only because it starred Hanks and friends, I admit that my mouth shut up many times, I did not expect to laugh and be watery-eyed at the same time.
I have always thought that as a lover of this art we have to be open to see everything, whether or not our type of films or genre, and it is in diversity is the taste. A Man Called Otto is a film where the second protagonist is loneliness and the damage it can cause to people if they let themselves be carried away by it, damage that can be irreversible. But it is also a story that shows us that in the most unexpected places we can be able to find a reason to live, a joy, a reason to get up every morning. And yes, this is what this film is about, it is a comedy that goes hand in hand with a drama that puts us to the test with sad situations, opaque but hopeful at the same time, and all this led by a great performance by Tom Hanks. So let's talk about this new story based on a great Swedish film.
Otto Anderson (Tom Hanks) is a deeply bitter, grumpy man who is always aware of everything that happens in his neighborhood, he is the typical person who bothers everything because he wants everything to be perfect, to work perfectly and those who are slightly out of the norm will be subjected to Otto's inclement judgment. The thing is that there is a reason behind all this and is that he is going through a grief, one that has affected him without him knowing it or well maybe yes but decides to omit it so that in addition to his temperament details he is someone deeply isolated and therefore lonely. Otto is the living sample of what it is to not want to live anymore, his whole reason for being vanished so death is the only thing he is waiting for knocking on his door sooner rather than later.
But as life takes many turns and out of nowhere we get signs that can mean a new beginning and a new breath of fresh air, Otto's destiny may change a little and this is thanks to a family. In the same complex of houses where they live and of which Otto is like a kind of strict neighbor/watchman comes a most particular marriage, one that against all odds they manage to establish a friendship that day after day seems to feed more and grows in unexpected ways. The film is basically this, is to see how thanks to this family Otto's life seems to be beginning to "change" although the old habits are still in his mind, the way forward will often be uphill for things that will help them in the film with the context.
When the movie starts I didn't know what to expect, I understood it was a black comedy but nothing further from the truth. It is a very fresh story, touching and very real too because we all know someone like this or have or are like Otto so many times we can feel some kind of empathy or familiarity. I say this because the background of the film is grief and the way it is faced, unfortunately many of us have gone through that situation that with the loss of someone close we feel that there is no more reason to live, that the hole that person leaves is bigger than the desire to move forward and that is something that our friend Otto has to be living with, with the decision that if it is worth living one more day.
The story is a journey that shows us how Otto got to the situation he is in, it shows us how hard and even unfair life can be but it also teaches us that despite everything there will always be a thread of light at the end of the tunnel, that if we see and understand that many people are there to help us instead of being mere stones on the road that road will be much more enjoyable and pleasant to travel. Within the drama there are touches of comedy because being a curmudgeon can sometimes be funny so those scenes are often an outlet for the sadness that we saw seconds ago, that union and mixture of feelings will always hit in my opinion because there is nothing more natural in life than to laugh or cry.
We are not in front of a blockbuster or anything like that, we are in front of a very human and sincere story. And this sincerity is given by the performances of both Tom Hanks and Mariana Treviño who plays Marisol, the woman who manages to captivate and rescue Otto from his own life. The plot is what it is, simple and linear, there is nothing extraordinary or even elaborate, it has a beginning, development and an end well marked without leaving loose ends. And that's fine, sometimes it is enough that a story is basic but powerful to do the job and captivate the viewer, because yes, at the end of the film I left convinced and ended up very happy to have made the decision to give it a chance and watch it.
Tom Hanks is spectacular, his performance is very, very good, what can I say about an actor like him? Even though it's not a role that will win him an Oscar it's one that he handled flawlessly, you laugh with him, you get upset, you cry, you feel pity, empathy, respect, all those feelings in a five minute scene, that's how good Hanks is. He is the weight of the story as it revolves around him but he is not the only one who has to take the credit. Mariana Treviño, this Mexican actress, is another one who with an impressive charisma manages to get the many looks. She is the typical Latin person who is cheerful, dedicated, supportive but above all with a big heart that comes to the neighborhood to fill it with a little color. It is a very marked contrast between both characters that is what makes them look so good, it is a formula that undoubtedly works perfectly.
An 8/10 because it is a great movie that leaves us some very beautiful and important life lessons. I was surprised for good, incredible that in the little less than two hours it lasts I was never watching the clock, always watching the screen because it is a story that invites you to feel comfortable. Bravo to Tom Hanks and Mariana, endearing characters that gave life to a very touching story. I leave the trailer for you to take a look.
Well my people that's all for today, I hope you liked it.
