HIVE MUSIC FESTIVAL Week 8 Second Round (ENG-ESP): "Every Friday Night" (Original)
(Traducción al español al final del post)
Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town, South Africa!
Welcome to Week 8 / Round 2 of the Hive Music Festival! A massive thank you to @edwardstobia for giving us another 3 weeks! I am stoked!
Today I am singing to you from the backseat of my car, in my office parking lot! I work full time for a renewable energy development company. I usually cannot record my videos for HIVE during the night because I have a beautiful baby daughter who needs her sleep! My usual solution is to record during lunch on the days I work from home. However, this week we are being visited by our German managing director and so I am coming into the office every day this week! I didn’t want to miss out on posting a song, so I brought my guitar along in the car to work and nipped out to sing for you in the car park during lunch! Hahaha!
Unfortunately, the acoustics are not quite as good as when I have sung in my bathroom, and definitely not as good as my normal plan of singing and playing into my little amp!
Last week I talked a bit about how I sometimes write songs in an alternative tuning called DADGAD (as opposed to the standard guitar tuning of EADGBE). I then played one of my up-tempo blues-rock songs. Today I would like to show you how DADGAD sounds when I play in a more conventional major key… If you play guitar and have never tried DADGAD… I explain the basics in this post so please give it a try! @jasperdick/music-live-original-and-cover
Today’s original song is called “Every Friday Night?” I call it my High-School Musical song because it describes that teenage angst of trying to gather the courage to ask that girl to dance at something like the School Dance! (I was a very shy teenager and young man! Luckily on the day I met my beautiful wife, she made it clear that I was welcome to talk to her or I might never have got up the courage! Haha!)
I hope you enjoy it the song and notice how the tuning allows me to sound fuller (with open strings ringing in the root notes) and also allows me to do some riffs, even while strumming the root chord! It is a song I often sing with the help of my friend @clairemobey in our collaborative duo called MobeyDick – here’s a video of how it sounds then:
Before I go: Please look out for my weekly cover request post on Thursday! If you make a song request in the comments, and then I attempt the song, you get rewarded with 50% of that post's rewards in HP! Please have a think about what song you would like me to tackle for you?
Lyrics for "Every Friday Night?" by @jasperdick (original)
Here I stand against the wall again
Here I stand, I’m terrified again
It’s the same thing, every Friday night
I’m wondering if the words will come out right… Oh girl…
Do you want to dance with me, do you want to dance with me tonight?
Do you want to dance with me, do you want to dance with me tonight?
I hope you do…
It’s the same girl since we started high school
She’s gorgeous, she’s funny and she’s cool
Yes I know, I know that’s she’s my friend
But feelings grow and now I can’t pretend… Oh no… girl…
Do you want to dance with me, do you want to dance with me tonight?
Do you want to dance with me, do you want to dance with me tonight?
I hope you do…
Do you see me standing here?
Do you even know I care for you?
Do you want to dance with me, do you want to dance with me tonight?
Do you want to dance with me, do you want to dance with me tonight?
I hope you do…

¡I am stoked!
Oh no... chica...
¿Quieres bailar conmigo, quieres bailar conmigo esta noche?
¿Quieres bailar conmigo, quieres bailar conmigo esta noche?
Espero que sí...
¿Me ves aquí de pie?
¿Sabes siquiera que me importas?
¿Quieres bailar conmigo, quieres bailar conmigo esta noche?
¿Quieres bailar conmigo, quieres bailar conmigo esta noche?
Espero que sí...

I find it very funny but at the same time I think you are very brave and passionate about making music in your car, I admire you for what you do, because you write beautiful songs, how great to have such excellent musicians like you.
... and excellent musicians like you as well!! You've definitely been a star of the HMF!
Among the challenges of a musician is adapting to any stage, which you do incredibly. This song is very beautiful in its melody, and the lyrics seem incredible to me, they have a connection with reality and everyday life. Congratulations and a round of applause!

What a joy that music accompanies you wherever you go. For us, the public of this great Hive Music Festival, it is a great privilege to have you every week and to know that it doesn't even stop you from going to the office, it is to admire and above all, to applaud. This shows us that you are a true lover of music and sharing it with the rest of the world. Thank you, my friend. Your song, again, is great. I love the beat. I'd love to try if I can take it to Spanish and cover it. I'll let you know if I manage to do it... Of course, if I manage to do it, all the credit for that post will go to you.
That would be amazing for you to try it in Spanish! I guess there might have to be some adjustment to the translated lyrics to make them fit the music!
The music structure is quite easy:
Verse and Chorus: Dmaj / Gmaj
The "Oh Girl" part: Emin / Gmaj / Amaj
The "Do you see me standing here?" part: Bmin / Amaj / Gmaj /Amaj
And then a capo on 1st fret to make it actually D#maj / G#maj (etc) - but pick a key that suits you.
I've never tried it in standard tuning but I think the DADGAD tuning helps a lot in making it sound full. It's not hard! Here's my post explaining the DADGAD chord shapes I use again:

Waooo!!! You have surprised me because this time you are in the car performing the piece and that's great, congratulations for that!
Just the fact that you brought your performance despite your busy schedule shows the commitment you have to the Festival and the community.
Beautiful piece of music, that guitar sounded better than ever, congratulations! I look forward to listening to you in the car, you sound great xD!
Blessings!
Hahaha - thank you! Yes I think the guitar is a very nice one that probably sounds better unplugged!
Well done for overcoming the challenges of parenthood! 😆 Kids (and especially babies) really do force you to get creative.
Thanks for the daily dose of music, discovering new songs is always fun!
Don't forget you are still allowed to ask for more cover requests on Thursdays! Another one of those posts coming out tomorrow!
