HIVE MUSIC FESTIVAL Week 29 Second Round (ENG-ESP): "Zombie" by The Cranberries, feat "Bongo Cat"!

Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Zone Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town in South Africa! Welcome to Week 29 / Round 2 of the Hive Music Festival!

After doing only original songs for the first 22 weeks, four weeks ago I started wearing the “Cover Hat of Shame”. (When I started playing music in public, one of the first places I went to was called the Barleycorn Music Club, which heavily encouraged that we try out our original songs on the audience. I even joined the organising committee to put on the little gigs for a while. So, my “cover hat of shame” joke originates from those days! Hahaha!)

But… I don’t want to just play any old cover for the Hive Music Festival! You guys are my friends and deserve something special… a special effort from me! So, I thought I would challenge myself like this: My main instruments are guitar and harmonicas: What if I had to ensure that for every cover I do for the Hive Music Festival over the next few weeks, that I must use a different instrument as well, to test my creativity and ability to learn and play with different new sounds?

And so – this week is the seventh instalment of a new series of HMF Entries called “Wacky Instrument of the Week”. Hahaha! Now I am going to look like a beginner! Which is fine! We are all friends here!

The first “Instrument of the Week” was the Kazoo, which is easy to learn once you realise you must hum rather than blow!

The second “Instrument of the Week” was the Pennywhistle, which is actually played in a traditional South African music style called “Kwela”… The pennywhistle is not only used in Traditional Irish jigs (like The Dubliners or The Pogues) at all!

The third “Instrument of the Week” was my grandfather’s old autoharp. With a single button, you mute all the strings except those that make up the chord you have chosen, so it’s easy to play… the hard part was tuning the old thing! Hahaha!

The fourth “Instrument of the Week” was my toddler daughter’s toy xylophone (although I believe a xylophone with metal keys is actually called a “glockenspiel”!)

The fifth “Instrument of the Week” was a bamboo zither instrument that they call a “Valiha” in Madagascar!

The sixth “Instrument of the Week” was my baby daughter’s ukelele, with prestick/tic-tac over the bridge to give it a more banjo-muted sound!

Now it time for the seventh “Instrument of the Week” – The Bongo Cat Website!

I would really like to learn piano/keyboard one day. Alas, I don’t have one yet!

But… a few years ago my wonderful but crazy wife @juliadick with her wacky sense of humour started getting into Bongo Cat videos aimed at children, where animated cats play instruments and “miaow” the entire vocal part instead of singing it! I hope you pity me! Hahaha!

She then discovered the Bongo Cat website, where children can play around with the popular sounds themselves, (much to the irritation of their parents I’m sure):

As you can see…
• Keys A and D hit the bongos
• C is for cymbal
• F is for cowbell
• B is for tambourine
• Q to P are notes on the marimba…
• And look! Keys 1 to 0 are the notes C, C#, D, D# E, F, F#, G, G# and A on the piano! Unfortunately A# and B are missing from the octave but still good enough to try something right?

I hope you have fun being a child again for a minute on this website! Hahaha!

So, I grab my loop pedal and play the A minor, F major, C major, G major four-chord miracle into it on guitar.

Then for the chorus loop channel I play the following on “Bongo Cat”:

A minor: Keys 1, 5, 0 = C, E and A
F major: Keys 1, 6, 0 = C, F and A
C major: Keys 1, 5, 8 = C, E and G
G-5: Keys 3 and 8 = D and G. (Unfortunately no A# or B to make it a full minor or major… as these would be keys 11 and 12…)

Sorry my phone was placed quite close to the laptop when I plonked on these buttons, so the moment of recording them came out very loud! The damn website took a split second to kick in and miss-timed my first beat as well, so I quickly played the first chord again!

Notice that it takes two hands to do what one hand could easily do on a real piano/keyboard! Hahaha!

I then add some beat-box to the chorus, and even noodle about with some lead guitar, which is something I must practice whenever I find the time to record loops! Hahaha!

And the song I am singing over this popular chord pattern? The famous excellent anti-war song “Zombie” by the Cranberries!

Hola a todos en HIVE, y especialmente a la comunidad de Music Zone. ¡Mi nombre es Jasper y les escribo (y canto) desde Ciudad del Cabo en Sudáfrica! ¡Bienvenidos a la Semana 29 / Ronda 2 del Hive Music Festival!

Después de hacer solo canciones originales durante las primeras 22 semanas, hace cuatro semanas comencé a usar el “Cover Hat of Shame”. (Cuando comencé a tocar música en público, uno de los primeros lugares a los que fui fue el Barleycorn Music Club, que animaba mucho a probar nuestras canciones originales en la audiencia. El primer "Instrumento de la semana" fue el Kazoo, que es fácil de aprender una vez que te das cuenta de que debes tararear en lugar de soplar.

El segundo "Instrumento de la semana" fue el Pennywhistle, que en realidad se toca en un estilo de música tradicional sudafricano llamado "Kwela"... ¡El pennywhistle no solo se usa en los jigs tradicionales irlandeses (como The Dubliners o The Pogues) en absoluto!

El tercer “Instrumento de la semana” fue el viejo arpa automática de mi abuelo. Con un solo botón silencias todas las cuerdas excepto las que componen el acorde que hayas elegido, por lo que es fácil de tocar... ¡lo difícil fue afinar lo antiguo! ¡Jajaja!

Realmente me gustaría aprender piano/teclado algún día. ¡Ay, todavía no tengo uno!

Pero… hace unos años mi maravillosa pero loca esposa @juliadick con su alocado sentido del humor comenzó a meterse en videos de Bongo Cat dirigidos a niños, donde gatos animados tocan instrumentos y “maullan” toda la parte vocal en lugar de cantarla. ¡Espero que me tengas lástima! ¡Jajaja!

El maldito sitio web tardó una fracción de segundo en activarse y también cronometró mal mi primer tiempo, ¡así que rápidamente toqué el primer acorde de nuevo!

¡Observe que se necesitan dos manos para hacer lo que una mano podría hacer fácilmente en un piano/teclado real! ¡Jajaja!

Luego añado un poco de caja de ritmos al estribillo, e incluso jugueteo con un poco de guitarra solista, ¡que es algo que debo practicar cada vez que encuentro tiempo para grabar loops! ¡Jajaja!
