SURFING: Sandy Shorebreaks on a Long Weekend Mini-Vacation just East of Cape Town, South Africa

Hello everyone, and especially the SurfHive Community! It's Jasper, the musical-surfer dad from Cape Town in South Africa.

Monday is going to be a public holiday here in South Africa. So I decided to take leave on Friday as well, and we (myself, my wife @juliadick, and my two year old daughter Madison) have managed to join our friends Rhonwyn, Olivia and Clare on a long weekend mini-vacation at a place Rhonwyn's family owns just about 90 minutes East of our home in Cape Town.

FRIDAY

Friday was actually quite sunny, which is strange as a wintery NW wind was blowing, and soon after arriving at the holiday cottage, we found this little tortoise enjoying a sunbathe in the garden!

Olivia has been learning how to surf at Cape Town's best beginner beach, and bravely paddled out to experience the shorebreak in the next village about 5 minutes around the corner from where we were staying!

Olivia about to attempt standing up on a smaller one before it gets too steep on the shallow sandbank - it didn't go too well, but I'm proud she gave it a good go!

Here comes one for me, groomed and clean from the NW offshore

Look how stunning the mountains are in this part of the country as I paddle for it!

I choose to go left and need to act fast!

Olivia in the foreground and another good bank and mountains in the background!

Choosing to go right this time, just so all of you can see the lovely mountains of course!

Looking promising...

Lip is catching up... but the next section is standing up quick!

"Eek, I can't keep up with that!"

Maybe if I was a professional surfer like Adin Masenkamp on this wave, I might have been fast enough!

An interesting "follow-cam" angle of another surfer!

Friday ended with a beautiful sunset and a switch in the weather as it started to get colder

We even lit a fire in the fire-place, and sang some songs to my guitar accompaniment, even filming a soft cover song (Madison was already asleep!) with Rhonwyn singing lead for my Hive Music Festival entry: https://ecency.com/hive-120026/@jasperdick/vfjwfjoj

SATURDAY

Saturday has been grey and drizzly so far. This is strange as the SE wind that is blowing today and tomorrow is usually a summer wind. Tomorrow is predicted to be a "Black South-Easter" - a rare torrential storm from the summer direction!

After a lovely breakfast and a quick trip to see a penguin sanctuary, it was time for Madison's nap and I could check the local village's beach which was the offshore one now!

At first I enjoyed surfing a bit of a novelty in a rocky bay where at least there was a shoulder I could keep up with!

Then I paddled out with a bodyboard to a more hollow bank!

Trying to get that view!

Now I'm safely indoors again - the wind is getting stronger and tomorrow's weather will be terrible! So I'm glad I managed to get a few sessions in!

Now the South African rugby team must play the World Number 1 team Ireland in the World Cup tonight, but we are in good form so have a good chance! Let's enjoy that!

BYE FOR NOW!

I dig tortoises.. they're so dope. Funny enough, I was thinking of them last night while I was cutting a tomato. Had a random thought that it would be cool to know of a tortoise nearby, in the mood for the juicy ends.

That water looks sick! Thanks for sharing another one of your awesome adventures. You remind me that I still have youth in me, despite my bones sometimes saying otherwise. Hope you have a solid weekend. Cheers my friend.
