SURFING (ENG/POR): East of Cape Town, South Africa! An Elephant Seal enjoys a Contest Vibe!

Hello everyone, and especially the SurfHive Community! It's Jasper, the musical-surfer dad from Cape Town in South Africa.

I'm enjoying a weekend in a coastal village about 1.5 hours East of Cape Town. As we arrived this morning, the sea was clean but the waves were quite small, so after settling my wife and daughter with her family at the Holiday House, I drove to the next village which has a more exposed beach...

The talk of the town is that a massive elephant seal has chosen this beach to molt on - they are calling him "Buffel", which means Buffalo, but is also a common funny nickname given to large rugby playing men here in South Africa!

The other thing I noticed was a gazebo on the beach - some sort of contest was happening. It turned out to be the Boland Provincial bodyboarding trials. The first heat was the very young boys, and this one was the only one who paddled to the back, so I assume he won the heat! I wonder if he got any points deducted for the fact that his father was out there coaching him!

But it meant that I, and a few other surfers, could catch the other waves off the same peak without disturbing the contest!

One of the people having the most fun was a kneeboarder - South Africa actually has quite a few kneeboarders and is competitive on the world stage - we've actually had several bodyboarding world champions as well... I don't know why we are so comparatively useless at conventional surfing, but it certainly won't be me who fixes that - Hahaha!

The next heat of the bodyboarding contest was for older teenagers who all felt comfortable paddling to the back with the help of the rip current, and so it made sense to paddle to a different peak on the beach to give them space. The middle of the beach was actually a little bit bigger...

A couple more and let's call it a day!

It meant I got to check out "Buffel" the elephant seal from the far side of the beach. As you can see, he has been cordoned off with safety tape, and he even has a security guard to make sure everyone respects him from a safe distance!

So! Exciting news - the next time I ride a board, it will probably be a snowboard! I am off to France to ski and snowboard for the first time in about 8 years! My father is coming too, and because he is now 76, this might be the last time I get to ski/snowboard with him as he might soon be too old and frail - so I am really looking forward to that!

I might write a post about how snowboarding feels different to surfing. Let's see!

Olá a todos, e especialmente à Comunidade SurfHive! É Jasper, o pai surfista musical da Cidade do Cabo, na África do Sul.

Estou aproveitando um fim de semana em uma vila costeira a cerca de uma hora e meia a leste da Cidade do Cabo. Quando chegamos esta manhã, o mar estava limpo, mas as ondas eram bem pequenas, então depois de acomodar minha esposa e filha com sua família na Casa de Férias, dirigi até a próxima vila que tem uma praia mais exposta...

*O que se fala na cidade é que um enorme elefante marinho escolheu esta praia para fazer a muda - eles o chamam de "Buffel", que significa Búfalo, mas também é um apelido engraçado comum dado a grandes jogadores de rugby aqui na África do Sul! *

A outra coisa que notei foi um mirante na praia – algum tipo de competição estava acontecendo. Acabou sendo as provas de bodyboard da província de Boland. A primeira bateria foi dos meninos bem novinhos, e esse foi o único que remou para trás, então presumo que ele venceu a bateria! Eu me pergunto se ele teve algum ponto deduzido pelo fato de seu pai estar lá treinando-o!

Mas isso significou que eu e alguns outros surfistas poderíamos pegar outras ondas no mesmo pico sem atrapalhar a competição!

Uma das pessoas que mais se divertiu foi um kneeboarder - a África do Sul, na verdade, tem alguns kneeboarders e é competitiva no cenário mundial - na verdade, também tivemos vários campeões mundiais de bodyboard... Não sei por que são relativamente inúteis no surf convencional, mas certamente não serei eu quem consertará isso - Hahaha!

A próxima bateria da competição de bodyboard foi para adolescentes mais velhos que se sentiram confortáveis ​​remando para trás com a ajuda da correnteza, e por isso fazia sentido remar para um pico diferente na praia para lhes dar espaço. O meio da praia era na verdade um pouco maior...

Estou indo para a França para esquiar e praticar snowboard pela primeira vez em cerca de 8 anos! Meu pai também está vindo e, como ele está agora com 76 anos, esta pode ser a última vez que vou esquiar/snowboard com ele, pois em breve ele poderá ficar muito velho e frágil - então estou realmente ansioso por isso!
