HIVE OPEN MIC #150 (ENG/ESP) Our Virtue: "Imagine" by John Lennon
Hello everybody on Hive and especially the Hive Open Mic Community! My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town in South Africa!
This is Week 150 of the Hive Open Mic Challenge (what a milestone!), and the theme for the week is “Our Virtue”! For me, that sounds like a song that pushes for humanity to achieve a heightened state where we are living by core values and principles, like peace, harmony and sharing.
After John Lennon left the Beatles and went solo, he released a very famous song called “Imagine”.
Some people think that the song pushes for Communism, with its lines about imagining “no countries, no religion, no possessions”.
That could be one way to look at it, but I think the point was imagine a world where humans are not fighting and killing each other over these exact things that seem to be at the core of our conflicts and even wars… Instead, the song wants us to imagine a life of peace with our fellow man, and to imagine living for today. If that is the point, then I think it is a brilliant song to match up with the theme of “Our virtue”…
What do you think – Is it a song that pushes Communism or just Peace on Earth?
Here is the original song:
By the way, I am doing a weekly post on Thursdays where I ask for cover song requests in the comments, and then if I attempt your song in the following week's post, you become a beneficiary to 50% of the post's rewards in HP! Please be sure to check those out and think of song requests for me?
Lyrics for “Imagine” by John Lennon
Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today... Aha-ah...
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion, too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace... You...
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world... You...
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

Aha-ah...
Imagina que no hay países
no es dificil de hacer
Nada por lo que matar o morir
Y sin religion tambien
Imagina toda la gente
Vivir la vida en paz... Tú...
Puedes decir que soy un soñador
Pero no soy el único
espero que algun dia te nos unas
Y el mundo será como uno
Imagina no poseciones
me pregunto si puedes
No hay necesidad de codicia o hambre
Una fraternidad de hombres
Imagina toda la gente
Compartiendo todo el mundo... Tú...
Puedes decir que soy un soñador
Pero no soy el único
espero que algun dia te nos unas
Y el mundo vivirá como uno solo

Your choice is so inspiring .. I never heard it before. Thanks so much Sir. Compassion is a virtue.
I loved the picking tune too.
How is South Africa today.
It is a beautiful song, and yet interesting how you could look at it in two ways. Many over-powerful Communist regimes tried to do away with religion, and the whole point was that your possessions would belong to the State instead. This has never worked, because the State was always power-hungry and corrupt... So in retrospect we can look at this song and wonder if John Lennon meant full-blown Communism or just more peace, compassion and harmony between us?
South Africa is beautiful - it's a warm summer evening and the stars are out...
There is definitely work to be done. We have higher unemployment than before, more violent crime, and more scheduled electricity power-cuts. I hope I can do my bit!
It's sad, Nigeria is not the better, few days to election and the standard of living is really hard, suspicions of vote buying a high due to the hard living. But we keep hope alive, that's another virtue I believe.
beautiful song and your interpretation was great a giant hug and peace be with you 🤗🎸🎶
Oh my my! @jasperdick well done, you killed this presentation, I so much enjoyed it. You know, I've heard this song so many times on the piano and I never thought it'd sound this good on the guitar. I loved your energy toward the song, your emotions helped relate the song well. I loved it so much. I'm looking forward to seeing your next choice of song and presentation
This is quite a great song. I think it talks about the life of peaceful coexistence. It calls us to shake off racism and all selfish living and live for ourselves today. Beautiful presentation Jasper. Keep it coming
Excellent work Jasper! We nearly chose the same song again 😄
Nice one Jasper, very chilled out and relaxing to listen to. Your "Yoo hoo ooo ooo" is on point ,very nicely done. I might try a couple new videos this week . I've been playing an old nylon stringed guitar that I rescued from a skip during a house clearance back in October ,its brought me some new inspiration and got me playing again after a long time away from music.
