Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing to you from Cape Town in South Africa!

I hope you are having a wonderful start to 2024, and that it is going to be a good, productive year for you.

Looking back at 2023, quite a few famous songwriters and musicians passed away. I thought I would do a series of weekly posts about some of them, as well as attempt to cover one or two of the songs that made them so famous.

Here is a list of some of the musicians and songwriters that passed away in 2023, that I will be researching and trying to cover:

2. Robbie Robertson

At least, these are the ones I am most familiar with! Is there anybody else who passed away in 2023 that you would like me to look into?

Let’s start with Number 1 on my list: Sixto Rodriguez, also known simply as “Rodriguez”?

Why am I starting with him, when most of you might not know who he is? Well, because I grew up with his music on the radio a lot in South Africa, and like many South Africans, I happen to know his story well!

The basic story is that Rodriguez spent most of his life living in Detroit, USA, thinking of himself as a failed musician that hadn’t really made it big. He had recorded two albums in 1970 and 1971, and then had retired in about 1976 from music…

What Rodriguez didn’t know was that his music gained a lot of popularity in South Africa during the end of Apartheid (the 1980s) – because his manager never told him… and basically stole all the royalties from his sales, while Rodriguez lived in relative poverty working manual labour jobs like demolition on building sites!

Here in South Africa, his songs sold more than Elvis Presley, and he was compared to people like Bob Dylan and Cat Stevens! For some reason, South Africans heard a rumour that we weren’t getting more music out of the mythical Rodriguez because he had committed suicide after the first two albums back in the 1970s! We didn’t know he was alive, but completely unknown, in his native USA.

Rodriguez never found out about how well known his music was in South Africa until his daughter Eva came across a website dedicated to him in 1997. After contacting the owners of the website, he organised successful tours to South Africa, where he had the bewildering experience of thousands of people singing along to his songs for the first time in his life, on the other side of the world!

The story of Rodriguez’s music being famous (unbeknownst to himself) on the other side of the world became famous because of a documentary movie called “Searching for Sugar Man” which was released in 2012. Here is the trailer:

I remember he came back to perform in Cape Town shortly after that, and I was finally able to be there, and see him for myself!

“Sugar Man” is the name of one of his most played songs here in South Africa – let me give it a shot! Here is the original version:
