Lately I've embraced spur-of-the-moment rambles chasing neon signs and cafe chatter. Mobile maps grant 21st century fortune hunters ample treasures if you forgo over-planning. Just so last night, letting intuition guide me from my lodgings unveiled a superb rooftop drinking nook high above Saigon's dizzying sea of mopeds and merchants.

Craving evening exercise and escapades beyond my guidebook's list, I entered "rooftop bars" into Google, hoping atmospheric potential images might jump out. One panorama did captivate - Củi Rooftop's candlelit vista overlooking vibrant cityscapes below.

The route seemed straightforward a quick half hour walk away. But after striding deliberately 20 minutes without spotting the towering signage I expected, I sheepishly asked a valet where had I gone astray? His guessing my destination made me optimistic, directing me up a dim Elvator nearby whose modest entry I had overlooked twice.

At last emerging onto the uppermost floor, the dazzling 360 degree views immediately quashed any navigational frustration in my victory. Choosing a table in the center of the room, I ordered a classic Negroni to toast the glittering urban sprawl around me as dusk descended under hanging lanterns.

Only a few others shared this perch initially, letting imagination conjure tales of the neighborhood homes and hides below. Soon the friendly bartender broke my reverie, inquiring my curiosities about his city while I sketched between snapshots. Last call came too soon it seemed! An easy choice for round two once my next boredom bout strikes.
