Apocalyptic Homesteading (Day 1285)
Hello Everyone!
Enjoying the sunset, Esmarelda is eating again, Washing carbois, Hauling the wagon & A much needed nap!
Alright, I am running about thirteen minutes behind schedule with my writing routine this evening... because I took some time at the very end of the day to just sit on the deck and watch the sunset. Thankfully, the deer flies have not been all that bad at the shelter site itself (like they are elsewhere here) so the experience was quite enjoyable.
I have no idea what time that I actually fell asleep last night... but I do recall trying to fall asleep for nearly an hour before finally drifting off. Per usual once I was actually asleep I got some really good rest... but getting to the point of falling asleep in the first place is still challenging no matter how tired that I am.
First thing this morning before I even brewed any espresso... I went outside to check on Esmarelda where she has been staying in that tote inside the solar shack. She was once again looking like she is improving somewhat... so after rolling up the door I offered her some wheat bread and she wound up eating the entire heel of a loaf.
As a side note I also wound up moving her water bottle closer to her... because she had moved a bit during the night and could no longer reach it easily. Also at some point (much later in the day) I fed her an entire soft shell flour tortilla by ripping it into small pieces and giving it to her one piece at a time.
Anyways, I did not mention it yesterday... but I took a very tiny bottle brush and zip-tied it to a very stout piece of fencing wire (the kind used for strainers) but ran out of steam for the day before I could test it out. So, first thing today I began the long slow process of washing all my carboi water containers on the outside with bleach water... and then scrubbing them out on the inside with the bottle brush.
I think that all total I can store around forty gallons (151.4 liters) of water just in the carbois alone... which is plenty for drinking water purposes. Considering that I also have eleven two liter bottles, a one gallon jug... and around seven repurposed bleach jugs to store water in (not to mention my 320 gallon IBC tank and three 50 gallon barrels) I should have plenty of storage capacity!
Once I was done with all the carbois and had them set out to dry... I went ahead and scrubbed down the table (piece of plywood used as a table) that has been setup here in the shelter site ever since I first began the initial land clearing. All that paint that I put on it seemed to preserve it rather well... and before I move I am going to try to saw off the small amount of rot that it has along the edges... and put a few new coats of paint on it.
Since I have been avoiding going and collecting the plastic pallet (that I use to put the IBC tote on) I decided to head over to that other tent with the wagon... and haul it back over to the shelter site so that I could wash it down. That task turned out to be much easier than I thought that it would be... and I was also able to haul some PVC pipe, the fiberglass poles that I use for the repeater antenna, my extra large pruners... and my automotive creeper all in the same load.
I really do not know what I did after all that jazz... but at some point I burned myself out and had to take an hour and a half nap to have enough energy to finish out the day. Immediately after the nap though... I hauled the wagon back to that other tent (again) and filled it full of containers that had fasteners stored in them.
Of course the containers were super fouled by rodent waste... so I scavenged up a bunch of clean containers to pour their contents into... while I scrubbed them down with bleach water. With all the stuff that I have been washing (and setting out to dry) the areas that I have to do so (without stuff being on the ground) is at a premium... so I fetched the gate to the temporary dog yard... and set it up on three plastic totes to act as a drying rack for all the newly washed fastener containers.
I also had to scrub the gate itself down too... and honestly I did not give it as much effort as I probably should have... because there was still a bunch of algae on it afterwards. My thinking is that when I take apart the rest of the dog yard... and clean its PVC parts... that I will just plan on washing the gate again if the sun does not kill all the algae before then.
Well, I have rambled on enough for this entry... and need to start unwinding for the evening... so that I can hopefully fall asleep early. I hope that everyone is doing well. Ta ta for now.

nice deer picture
Thanks. I already checked for all those things and could not spot any. Gave her a small amount of juglone (black walnut extract) today in case it is worms.
Yep the only deer left around here! Pretty sad that the rest of them got killed off.
