Apocalyptic Homesteading (Day 1041)

Hello Everyone!

Juggling work modes, Kudzu leaf meal woes, Passion flower transplants have grown & More than routines alone!

It is late in the day here and once again I failed to get any writing achieved earlier in the day. I guess that it does not matter when it gets done as long as I sit down and do it at some point during the day... or night. That said though, the writing does seem to come easier for me during the first moments after waking and gets progressively more difficult as the day drags on.

During the earlier part of the day I once again went on several hikes and did some of my more mundane chores around the shelter area. As far as getting back into routines goes I have been doing well but I still do not feel like I am getting enough done each day. A big part of feeling that way is because I am still spending a good bit of time on the computer each day and no matter how much 'work' that I do on there... it just does not have the same feeling as doing physical work.

Anyways, I have yet to go harvest more of that kudzu to store as leaf meal for the winter but I am thinking that I will pull the wagon over to that area this weekend and see how much of it that I can feasibly harvest. I do not think that I mentioned it but the last time that I went to harvest them, I was cutting the vines lose and pulling it from the tree... but in the process most of the leaves were falling from the vines.

Having learned last year that 'harvesting time is everything' with the kudzu I think that the time to have harvested them (with the vine pulling method) was several weeks ago when the leaves were dark green. Currently they are a much paler green, which I learned last year is the color they get right before they turn a light brown color and start dropping from the vine on their own.

On a different note, I got to looking at those other passion flower vines that I transplanted... and from what I can tell perhaps one (or even two) more of them may have survived the process. The plants themselves still look like they are in a fragile state and nowhere near as healthy as that one that I had previously considered my only successful transplant... but they are alive!

I made a mental note to move both those plants into a sunnier area so that they can hopefully put on enough growth (and put out enough roots) to make it through the colder months. One thing is for sure and that is that... now that I know exactly what that plant looks like when it is small I will be transplanting as many of them as I can into flower pots next summer.

It is worth noting that the passion flower vines produce the largest fruit out of anything else growing here. So, I really want to focus on getting them to the point where they will produce as much fruit (by weight) as say the persimmon trees do... if not more. It might take doing some creative terracing to keep the wildlife off of them... but I think that if I got the terraces high enough off the ground... then I could realistically look at expanding into growing them beyond the dog yard.

Alright, it is now closer to sunset and I had to stop writing for a while so that I could get some end of the day chores done. Out of all the weird things that I have learned over the last many years I think that having solid daily routines may well have been one of the most beneficial. As weird as it may sound I miss the simplicity of those routines when I fall out of the habit of doing them... which thankfully is nowhere near as frequent as when I began building them.

Currently, I am having a challenging time (with the routines) because I often exhaust myself while hiking and keep napping much longer than I intend to afterwards which of course skews my sleep cycle. I should probably take a break from the hiking for a day or two to let my body recover but I have kind of been enjoying feeling it slowly get back into shape via all the aches and pains!

Well, I am going to keep this entry short and sweet so that I can get the editing done before the hour grows much later. I hope that everyone is doing well and has a nice day/night.

I am unsure what kind of mushrooms these are but they look neat!

Those mushrooms growing on the compost keep popping up like crazy! I found out they are Chlorophyllum molybdites which are quite poisonous!

Some small reishi mushrooms growing near a cherry tree stump.

I like these shorter posts that you have started making, you still put a lot in them and it is easier on my eyes to read.

Ha! I am sure that I will fluctuate back and forth in regards to the length. They are easier on my eyes also because it takes less reading and re-writing during the editing phase.
