Adventures In Homesteading (Day 25)

Hello Everyone!

Running behind schedule, Refilling water jugs, Going on a supply run, Prepping for rain & Installing the new mailbox!

Alright, I am way behind schedule with my writing routine today... due to having gone on a much needed supply run during the time that I would usually be writing. At least I am here a few hours before sunset (espresso in hand) and have only a few more chores to do during remainder of the daylight hours.

The trip to town today for supplies went rather smooth and efficient even though I had several stops to make... as well as visiting that public spring to fill some water jugs. I gotta admit that after drinking that water the last many weeks... that I am totally hooked on the stuff... and it is probably one of the best tasting springs that I have encountered in this state... plus I have yet to notice even a speck of silt in it.

Before refilling the jugs today, I was running very low on water... and although I knew that I had a ride scheduled for a supply run... I also had to ask myself what would I do if that fell through. Of course ordering one gallon jugs of water through that delivery service is an option... but my question was more about how would I get water aside from that... and yup that nearby creek was the first thing that came to mind.

Maybe eventually I will meet someone that lives along it... and they will grant me access to fill up some buckets from it throughout the year. I am in no way a big fan of creek water... but it sure would be handy for utility water purposes... and for bathing in during the times (like now) when I do not have much rainwater.

Anyways, it was another lackluster day as far as productivity goes... but at least I am finally starting to unwind a little bit... and starting to settle into the place. The tilted camping scenario is not helping much... and I think that to break out of the rut that I have fallen into... that I need to upgrade my living scenario as soon as possible.

Basically, I am still camping in the setup that we plopped down (and setup) in the dark on the first night... and although I have found time to do all kinds of other activities... I have made no time to work on it. Part of that is because I know that it is all temporary... and part of it is that I am really hesitant to invest myself further in the place by setting up something more permanent.

On a different note. There is supposed to be a lot of rain over the coming days... so while I was out shopping I visited a hardware store and got some straw. The only places that I have spread any of it so far are along the paths to the camping tent, directly in front of the tent... and a little bit at the front of the dog yard.

The chickens really went nuts over the straw because there is a lot of seeds in it... but hopefully they do not eat them all and some of it will grow. Given the lack of rain the bare spots that me and the dogs have made are not too bad... but nonetheless they are very bare... and I am hoping the straw will grow in fast since there are so many seeds in it.

My other big achievement today was getting a large mailbox (and numbers) while I was at the hardware store... and then later getting it installed on a black locust post near the road. I was not too particular with how it came out... but I did make sure to gently slope the mailbox forward so that it will never hold water.

Well, I am going to call this entry 'good enough' so that I can get the last of my chores finished before sunset. I hope that everyone is doing well. Ta ta for now.

The big cedar with the rot near the base.

My cellular repeater antenna screwed to a sweet gum tree!

I thought this black locust sapling died during the move but alas it is sprouting new growth!

One of the first things that I did at the new place was hanging up my 'peace and good luck' cow skull!

Some Queen Anne's Lace!

Some more Queen Anne's Lace!

I looked this plant up earlier but all I can recall is that it had 'cabbage' in the name!

Some of my black locust seedlings are getting big!

Emily is chomping down on the straw seed!

Woot I am now official!

I have to smile at your mailbox, you have a home and no one can say you have to move. 😆
