Adventures In Homesteading (Day 24)

Hello Everyone!

Burning through calories, The steep terrain workout, Bulk drinking water delivery services & An under-performing rainwater system!

Alright, it is late afternoon and I finally sat down to do my writing routine... at the time that I intended to do it... so that is progress. Napping yesterday during this time wound up really throwing me off... which lead me to taking a nap much earlier in the day today... which yup I just awoke from not all that long ago.

As an aside to the whole napping thing... I keep waking up from not only my naps but also my nightly rest... intensely craving some kind of food that I have in my camp. After my nap earlier it was potatoes... and I spent the better part of the previous half hour getting a massive pan of them cooked up... because if I awake craving something once it is bound to happen again.

Most days I feel like I have run some kind of marathon with having to constantly traverse the steep terrain... and no matter how much food I eat I cannot seem to keep up with the calories that I am burning off. Of course, simply going from camp to camp each day (through the big gulch) is enough to wear anyone out... and it is not like getting into better shape is a bad thing... but whoa at this rate I am going to have to drastically increase my food budget.

Anyways, I slacked off another day... and yet again... have no regrets for doing so given just how rough of a ride the last many weeks have been. I know that I should be doing stuff like crazy in preparation for the changing seasons in a few months... but currently simply 'catching my wind' will suffice.

Taking a step back from everything made me realize that I can most likely get bulk potable water delivered to me... which of course lead me down an online rabbit hole trying to find a delivery company in this area. I was surprised to find that there are several such services (but none located here) that will also deliver pool water... and large volumes of bottled drinking water.

Long story short, I settled on the service that I like the most... and am going to give them a call to see what it will cost me to get my 320 gallon IBC tote... and maybe one fifty gallon barrel filled with potable water. It might really be the way to go to fill my drinking water needs... plus if I do get to the point where I want to make a pond... I can get that water delivered as well.

The water scenario here has been an ongoing challenge... and although it rained for a while late last night... my rainwater catchment system only collected around a half a gallon or so of water. Having thought that it was not going to rain I failed to set out any containers around the tarp that covers my camping tent... and missed out on getting water from there... which is where I have been getting the bulk of my rainwater from.

Early this morning I walked around and looked at most of the areas that I have been probing for water at... and although everything definitely looked damp... it did not appear like much surface water had flowed through the areas... nor had any come up from the ground. None of which is all that surprising given just how dry things are at the moment... and how this heat wave has just gone on and on for the last several weeks.

On a different note. I have yet to figure out where I am going to build a bar at... but the one thing that I do know is that it is going to be on some flat frigging ground... because I am so tired of doing everything on a slope. That big piece of cedar (with the hook) that I want to build the bar with... is right around four meters long... and considering that I can barely find one meter of flat ground... I am rather stumped on what to do aside from trying to create a flat spot.

Well, I think that I am going to wrap this entry up and go get another nap if I can. I hope that everyone is doing well. Ta ta for now.

The clouds were pretty today!

The wheat grass is growing well in the pool!

Even the native grass seems to be staying alive in the pool!

The wee 'flat' spot that we had to unload everything at during the move!

I want this fallen cedar but it has a massive poison ivy vine growing on it!

I dunno the name of this stuff but it grows all over the woods here.

There are even a good amount of ferns!

Thanks for reading!

The green grassy stuff is fan clubmoss. When are you going to get a mailbox set up?
