Social Media - Weekend-Engagement #219

Hello,Weekenders!

Having a great weekend? I hope so...

Let's get to the point!

(I hate this view.)

Right now, I feel the line regarding social media being good or bad is a little bit blurry.

At this moment, Venezuela is going through a hell politically speaking. Most of you may know about the elections, the fraud, the protests, the detentions of innocent people. Well, while most of us can do nothing but being vigilant of our well-being, there are others that are risking their lives out there.

This is a crucial time for Venezuelans. And you may be asking, what does this have to do with social media? Let me answer you.

Social media right now is a double-sharp weapon for us. The police and all the forces are against people. Under the commands of the “president” they stop people in the streets and take our phones to go through our social media, our photos, and messages, and if they find out something against the current government, they take us to prison.

There are many people in jail just for going to the pacific protests, for having a picture regarding the fraud; even memes can put a person behind bars.
While, the opposition encourages us to keep fighting, some of us are afraid. Many people have disappeared. Venezuelans from all around the world are using social media to keep track of the abusive traits of the government towards us, and to give visibility to the situation since many of us are being track down by the police forces.

Right now, I can say, social media is playing good. The cause is strong, and justice must prevail.

Hi June, it’s incredibly brave of you to highlight how social media is both a vital tool for visibility and a risk in Venezuela's current crisis; stay safe and keep fighting for justice.
