Farewell Jordan Henderson Liverpool FC
Liverpool and Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq have reached a preliminary agreement worth £12m, with additional add-ons, for the transfer of their captain, Jordan Henderson.
Henderson accompanied Liverpool to Germany for their training camp but did not participate in their 4-2 friendly victory against Karlsruher.
The 33-year-old English midfielder has two years remaining on his contract with Liverpool.
Al-Ettifaq recently appointed former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard as their manager.
This deal comes after Liverpool received a £40m offer from Al-Ittihad for another midfielder, Fabinho, last week. Fabinho did not join the team in Germany.
Saudi Arabia is attracting huge players this summer, including Karim Benzema from Real Madrid and N'Golo Kante, formerly of Chelsea.
Former Liverpool striker Roberto Firmino signed with Al-Ahli after his contract with Anfield expired, and there have been rumors linking Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez to the same club.
In June 2011, Liverpool acquired Henderson from Sunderland in a transfer valued at £20m.
During the last season, Henderson featured in 43 matches for the Reds, but it proved to be a disappointing campaign as they finished fifth in the Premier League, missing out on a spot in the Champions League.
Throughout his time with Liverpool, Henderson has amassed an impressive total of 492 appearances, contributing 33 goals and 57 assists.
Notably, Henderson served as the team's captain when they achieved victory in the Champions League in 2019. Furthermore, under his leadership, Liverpool claimed the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup later that same year.
Henderson's captaincy also proved pivotal in securing Liverpool's momentous triumph in the 2019-20 Premier League, marking the end of a 30-year wait for the English top-flight title.
In addition to these accomplishments, Henderson's accolades at Liverpool include triumphs in the FA Cup in 2022 and the League Cup in 2012 and 2022.
