Simple and Delicious Taichan Lontong Recipe - When Men Use the Kitchen
Hello everyone and all members of Foodies Be Hive Community, how are you today? I hope and pray that all of us are always given health, happiness and also full of love and affection. This time, I'm back to participating in this community to share my culinary stories and experiences.
Do you believe in the saying “everyone can cook” ? I believe with that quote, I think everyone in this world can cook. I'm sure, at least we've fried eggs or cooked instant noodles in our lives. However, cooking delicious food is another thing, because only certain people can produce delicious food.
Cooking is a skill that everyone should have. I think that cooking is not only a woman's job but men should also be able to cook a decent meal. Patriaki culture in Indonesia makes many men feel reluctant to cook, or just help their wives in the kitchen. I think, now is the era of gender equality and I want to share the recipe and the cooking process of one of the dishes I made.
Lontong Taichan
This time I want to make a dish called Lontong Taichan. Maybe, friends must be curious what kind of dish I made this. I try to describe the meaning of the language, Lontong is a food made from steamed rice with banana leaves. The boiling process takes a very long time, you could say lontong is like rice cake.
We already know about “Lontong” and what is “taichan”?, there is no detailed explanation. However, in Indonesia, we know Taichan Satay, one of the most popular and viral street foods in recent years. Taichan Satay is satay with chicken meat without peanut sauce, soy sauce, or Padang satay sauce. So, Sate Taichan is like chicken satay which is only seasoned with salt, pepper, coriander, and other spices, so that the shape of the meat of the satay is still white. To add to the delicacy, we eat it with a spicy chili sauce.
Lontong / Rice Cakes
I won't make the taichan satay, because i burn the satay it's very troublesome. I want to cook something simple, I happen to have chicken and leftover rice cakes in my kitchen. I want to use those two ingredients to make delicious food.
Food Tools and Ingredients
For Taichan:
- chicken meat
- coriander powder
- salt
For the sambal:
- chilli
- red onion
- garlic
Making process :
Prepare the chicken and cut it into smaller pieces. After that, wash the chicken.
After washing, dry and remove all water from the chicken. The drier it is, the better for the next cooking process. Add salt, pepper and coriander powder according to our taste, there is no standard and use our feelings to season this chicken. Then, stir until all the spices are evenly distributed in the chicken meat.
Prepare the stove and heat the pan, then put all the seasoned chicken in the pan. To get the authentic taste of the chicken meat and the seasoning is more pervasive, I fry it without using oil. Although it is more like the steaming process with spices.
Keep stirring the chicken in the pan, so it doesn't burn and cooks evenly.
After a while, the chicken meat will emit a fragrant aroma that makes you hungry and the chicken looks like it's starting to cook. Prepare a plate for this chicken meat.
Next, we will make taichan sauce with the ingredients we prepared.
Wash the chili, onion and garlic. I use a small red chili type which has a spicier taste than the usual chili.
After cleaning, all the ingredients were put into the Mitochiba chopper to be mashed.
I don't grind this sambal until smooth, I prefer the slightly coarse texture of the sambal.
Then, prepare a frying pan and a little cooking oil and fry this chili sauce until fragrant and cooked. Taichan Sambal is ready to be served.
We have done everything, the chicken meat has been cooked and we have made the taichan sauce. I cut the lontong / rice cake to a smaller size on the plate. Next, we get to the most difficult part of one dish, which is to make a beautiful and precise food plating, then take photos of this food to make it look appetizing when uploaded on social media.
I tried to take some photos of this food, and hopefully make you feel the taste too.

Hey @isdarmady. 😃 I agree everyone should learn how to cook. It may reduce world hunger, I think. 😂
Your lontong and taichan sambal dish looks delicious. I'm a meat person and always enjoy boiled or fried chicken in my meals. I've never had rice cakes though. Nice post. 👌
