Musabaqah Tilawatil Qur'an (MTQ) Competition in Medan City

Last week, the Medan City Government held the MTQ Competition which was located at the North Sumatra University Medan Mini Stadium. MTQ or Musabaqah Tiwatil Qur'an Competition is one of a series of competition festival events on Islamic religion with various fields of competition.

The Medan City Government and related agencies took a popular policy by combining this event with various events, one of which was a culinary festival. I think this is an interesting idea to promote this event to the general public or city residents. In addition, street food or culinary festivals can provide a domino effect of economic circulation and transactions that allow the macro economy to grow and develop.

I took the time to attend and came to the MTQ Festival last Tuesday. My wife and I came at 7 pm, and the atmosphere was already very busy with people. I have difficulty getting the ideal parking, so I have to park my vehicle quite far. We immediately walked to enter the street food festival area. Hundreds of people passing by did not dampen my intention to look for delicious and cheap culinary tonight. I will review some of the street food that I tried at the festival. Fyi, all food and drinks sold at this festival have received halal standards.

Spicy Grilled Meatballs

The first street food I tried at this festival was a serving of spicy grilled meatballs from the Seafood Bakar Bakar Food Outlet. Actually, there are various seafood menu choices at this street food outlet. Such as dumplings, fish balls, fish cakes, noodles, sausages and various other menus.

My order of grilled meatballs is processed and grilled after I place my order. It aims to keep the grilled meatballs served to customers in warm conditions. I've tried the roasted meatballs several times. The difference between the roasted meatballs that I tried this time, is the bigger size.

One portion of this meal is priced at IDR 25K (1.64 USD). We'll get three large skewers that come in a bowl for easy portability. For sure, the spicy seasoning of this roasted meatball is very delicious. It fits perfectly with the texture of the meaty and chewy meatballs. I really eat these meatballs voraciously, one thing I don't like is the price, which is a little pricey for me.

Takoyaki

The second street food that I tried at MTQ Medan Festival is Takoyaki. I was interested in trying this snack because I saw the cooking process of this dish. Takoyaki is one of the popular Japanese food or snacks in Indonesia. Takoyaki is made using flour dough which is cooked with a special tool so that texturally it forms a ball. Takoyaki is preferred because it has a delicious taste, is served warm and can be consumed by all ages.

One portion of takoyaki with mixed fillings costs IDR 20K (1.31USD). The ordering system is also made by order, meaning that every food we order will be cooked immediately. While waiting for my order to be cooked, I also photographed the process of making this takoyaki.

I can't wait to try this takoyaki. For size, one portion of takoyaki uses a bigger ball size when compared to takoyaki I've ever eaten. The taste of this food is also very delicious, especially if you eat it while it is still warm. The texture is soft and the sauce that is given also makes us enjoy it even more.

Ice Cream Roll

Finally, as a dessert, I tried a dessert that I had never tasted, namely the ice cream roll sold by Kulkul Ice Cream. I was very curious to try it, I ordered an ice cream with mango flavor without adding chocolate milk. I want pure mango flavor.

The process of making this ice cream roll is also interesting to see. The ice cream maker seems to be making several movements to spread the ice cream, like a chef cooking something in a wok. The process of making and processing this ice cream roll doesn't take too long, but because this food tenant is one of the most popular tenants, I have to be patient to wait for it.

For sure, I really like this ice cream roll. The mango flavor is very dominant, and it's hard for me to explain. However, the taste was really good and I bought up to two servings in that time. For the price, one portion of this ice cream roll is priced at IDR 10K (0.67USD), which is an affordable price for me.
