Design and Architecture of 90 Degrees Coffee Shop
Hello everyone
How are you today ? I hope and pray, we are all always given health and also ease in living this life. One thing I am sure and believe in, all members of Architecture+Design Community are people who are always enthusiastic and happy. Why is it like that ? every day we find a variety of creative and inspiring content in this community and make us excited to live each day. This time, I want to participate again in this community, by sharing stories about my experiences or impressions of the buildings I visited. Continue to listen to my story this time.
Last weekend, Saturday afternoon to be precise. My wife and I were planning to head out to go find a place to hangout and work. We decided to go to a café which is quite far from our house, maybe about 30-40 minutes drive. We think that road conditions on weekends will not be too crowded, and traveling can be fun. However, our plans went awry. Because, that day was a trial of traffic flow diversion carried out by our city government to reduce congestion. So, some roads have turned into one way, there have been diversions, and so on.
This condition makes many people confused, especially since Google Maps doesn't work because it still uses the old directions. I try to find small roads that can be passed. The quiet streets became crowded, I tried to turn around and accidentally found a coffee shop that had a very interesting design. I think it's better for us to park and just hang out here, rather than having to get stuck in traffic jams again.
90 Derajat Coffee Shop
The coffee shop that I visited has a unique name, 90 Derajat Coffee Shop. "90 Derajat " is a term from the Indonesian language which means 90 degrees. We can find this 90 degree element from the selection of the logo design used by this coffee shop, which I think is quite unique and the intention was to make it. 90 Derajat Coffee Shop has a logo in the form of a coffee cup, like a large latte cup with a smoke concept in the form of the number "90 with a degree logo", very cool and imaginative.
90 Derajat Coffee Shop is located at Sei Belutu Street no. 1-11, Medan Baru District – Medan City. The location is indeed in a small street, but I think this coffee shop chose the right location. 90 Derajat Coffee Shop is surrounded by various strategic objects, one of which is the University of North Sumatra, my favorite campus in my city. Because of that, when I came to this coffee shop, the visitors were also very busy with students. So, what makes this coffee shop crowded with visitors? Is it because of the design and architecture of this coffee shop that makes people comfortable? or because of the coffee? let's discuss.
90 Derajat Coffee Shop uses a house that has a large yard and room. If you look at the Sei Belutu Street area, it is a residential area with houses that have large yards. From here, I see that this coffee shop modifies a 90s-style residential house into a spacious coffee shop by combining minimalist, industrial and garden concepts. Unfortunately, the location is on a narrow road and the parking capacity is only for three cars. However, because the majority of customers at this coffee shop are motorbike users, we will see a lot of motorcycles parked at the front.
Outdoor Space 90 Derajat Coffee Shop
I want to invite friends to see the outdoor part of this coffee shop. The outdoor section of 90 Derajat Coffee Shop is at the front, which we can see after we pass through the first gate. The outdoor space of 90 Derajat Coffee Shop uses an industrial garden style which is made in a simple, minimalist and beautiful way.
We can see the impression of an industrial garden coffee shop in this outdoor space from the combination of cement floors, pebbles, and also green plants. Outdoor space 90 Derajat Coffee Shop uses a floor with cement floor finishing material that looks attractive and aesthetically pleasing. The use of floors with cement floor finishing is currently becoming popular. Cement floors give a clean feel and are also durable. Its high durability means you don't need to think about damage to the floor, you only need to do a little renovation if there are cracks.
In addition, one of the advantages of cement floors is that it makes it easier for business owners to adjust the appearance of the place with various designs. As in 90 Derajat Coffee Shop, the cement floor is combined with plant decorations which make this outdoor space very beautiful and comfortable for visitors. The use of green plants such as Calathea Lutea which has a shape like a banana leaf provides color for this out space. I also love the decorative pebbles used to cover the ground in the fig planting of this plant. The concept looks very matching with the floor too.
The selection of outdoor furniture from 90 Derajat Coffee Shop is also very appropriate. For the outdoor section, this coffee shop uses tables and chairs made of iron. All iron furniture is painted black to prevent corrosion on the chairs and tables. Furniture like this is very suitable for outdoor space, because it is resistant to hot and rainy weather. In addition, if we pay attention to the table used, it is a small round table that can only be placed with a few drinks. I think the business owner created this outdoor space for groups of visitors who just want to hangout and chat.
Indoor Space 90 Derajat Coffee Shop
Now, I invite my friends to see the design and architecture of this coffee shop's Indoor Space. The entrance to this room uses a glass door with various information. This indoor room uses air conditioning so the door must remain closed. When I came, the indoor part of this coffee shop was very crowded. There are about 30 students who are making their coursework. His assignment is quite unique, because he makes a group of student videos about the debate on a given topic. Because of that, I also had a hard time taking good pictures and had to pay attention to my surroundings as well.
This coffee shop seems to modify the original part of this house. When you go inside, this indoor room becomes one part of a large room without a partition. However, we can still see the rest, one of which is a wall that uses thick glass like this. I don't know what the term for this material is, but I often find designs like this in 90s-style luxury homes. This glass wall also makes sunlight and becomes additional light for this room.
In my opinion, the interesting part of the Indoor Space at 90 Derajat Coffee Shop, is the selection of decorations and interiors used. I see that there are lots of full body size mirrors in every corner of this room. Not only large glass, but given a shelf that is arranged with books, plants, and art items. These large mirrors attract the attention of female visitors for selfies, because they are made very beautiful and aesthetically pleasing.
For the floor, it still maintains the cement floor like in the outdoor section. Fully furnished cement floor, which gives a clean impression to those who see it. The selection of furniture in this indoor section uses a lot of wooden furniture. The tables and chairs are also designed so that customers can comfortably work in this room. The table is quite wide, can put two different laptops with indoor furniture that can only place drink orders. Apart from wooden furniture, the bench section is also made using brick and cement construction so that it is more efficient for this room.
Anyway, 90 Derajat Coffee Shop still has one more room, namely the Indoor Smoking Room but that room is very crowded and I also don't like cigarette smoke. The conditions also made it impossible to take photos, because it must have made people uncomfortable (because, many of the smokers were female students. I think their parents also must not know they were smoking). Okay, that's all about my experience at 90 Derajat Coffee Shop, see you next time.
Call me Isdarmady, because I have a full name that is very long, namely Isdarmady Syahputra Ritonga. I am a head of the family who work as Farmers Vegetables Hydroponic and Consultant Hydroponics, sometimes I also sell coffee from various regions in Indonesia.

Hello friend @isdarmady. As always I enjoy the coffee shops in your city, like 90 Degrees Coffee Shop which has a nice atmosphere although I don't like cigarette smoke either. I like that a lot of natural lighting comes in through the windows, that's very nice. Greetings friend and blessings!
hello @sorprendente thank you for stopping by
I also like coffee shops, very comfortable too for a place to hang out with friends or want to work.
Hello, I've been to this coffee shop once, I like the glass in the corner of the room, but I don't like the cigarette smoke that the customers make, even though it's an air-conditioned room.
hello @aswita thank you for stopping by
I think that's the regulation of this coffee shop, providing a safe and cool place but you can still smoke.
Oh what a cool cafe @isdarmady! It seems like your home city of Medan doesn't run out of incredible coffee shops. There's always something new to feature in our beloved community. The business competition is obviously tough, and cafe owners have definitely leveled up their marketing strategies for more sales, and most importantly, created radical architecture that would constantly magnetize more customers. 👍
The 90 Derajat Coffee Shop is certainly one of them! And I truly admire how they've designed the glass blocks on the curved walls and installed larger windows to allow natural light to flood the interiors. Everything looks and feels natural indeed. 😊
Is that establishment located in a residential district of your city due to its transformation from a previous house? Or is the area now converted to a commercial zone due to the presence of these ventures?
And finally, this may be off topic, but I'm simply curious. Isn't it interesting that female students (especially the smokers) there use coffee shops as their favorite hideouts away from the prying eyes of their parents? 😆
That's right, competition in the coffee shop and restaurant business seems to provoke creativity and ideas from business owners. The cooler, the more viral, will make people come. In addition, I found unique facts about coffee shop businesses that are willing to invest heavily in their buildings, designs and architecture.
Stories circulating from my friends who work as baristas, if the coffee shop or restaurant business with these beautiful and extraordinary buildings, try to get as much profit as possible in the first 6 months, by using influencer influence. If they failed to turn a profit in that period, the business only lasted one year. Some viral cafes or coffee shops can even earn hundreds of millions of rupiah per day.
I also really admire this glass block, it looks classic and creates a luxurious impression for people who see it. I always remember the 90's mansions always made with this design.
This coffee shop uses a building that used to be a private house. The area around the road is also still a lot of private residences. As you know, people in Indonesia always want to have a house with a wide and spacious house. I find lots of coffee shops that use buildings like that, because we can get a comfortable impression.
That's right, many students (women and men) go to coffee shops or cafes to smoke. I think smoking regulation in Indonesia is also too easy and we can easily find it in a local shop and buy just one or two sticks.
KMy comment got really long, thank you for stopping by.
No worries @isdarmady. Thanks a lot for your interesting feedback. I've learned many interesting facts about Indonesia thru your valuable insights! Keep up the stimulating conversations here in our beloved community. 😊
I'm finishing an architectural essay about a restaurant with a very cool cultural and environmental concept, please look forward to it.
