Memories

All cities have a history and in all of them there are memories of those landmarks that in the past were the representative icons of that city, but today for some other reason are no longer physically present, but remained in the memory of its inhabitants, the images of those memorable times are transmitted from generation to generation with some nostalgia by the elders, For them, remembering the past means going into a sea of feelings and emotions, which sometimes tend to be good and pleasant, but at other times can be marked by pain and sadness, in short, to remember is to relive certain experiences and with them we always seek to go the right way and not make the same mistakes as before.

Todas las ciudades cuentan con una historia y en todas existen recuerdos de aquellos hitos que en el pasado fueron los iconos representativos de esa ciudad, pero que en la actualidad por alguna otra razón ya no están presentes físicamente, sino que quedaron en la memoria de sus habitantes, las imágenes de esos tiempos memorables se transmiten de generación en generación con cierta nostalgia por parte de los mayores, ya que para ellos rememorar el pasado significa adentrarse en un mar de sentimientos y emociones, que algunas veces suelen ser buenos y agradables, pero en otras ocasiones pueden estar marcados por el dolor y la tristeza, en fin recordar es volver a vivir ciertas experiencias y con ellas se busca siempre ir por el camino correcto y no cometer los mismos errores de antes.

Caracas is a relatively young city since it barely exceeds 400 years of history, but in these four centuries it has been able to observe a myriad of political, economic and social changes, some have been subtle, but others have come with the force of a revolution, while some of these changes have been accepted by the population, others have caused the unstoppable anger of its citizens. In other words, the Venezuelan capital is characterized as a very active city, socially diverse and with a fighting spirit, which is always looking for progress and development.

Caracas es una ciudad relativamente joven ya que apenas supera los 400 años de historia, pero en estos cuatro siglos ha podido observar un sinfín de cambios políticos, económicos y sociales, algunos han sido sutiles, pero otros han llegado con la fuerza de una revolución, mientras que algunos de estos cambios han sido aceptados por la población, otros han causado la ira indetenible de sus ciudadanos. Es decir, la capital venezolana se caracteriza por ser una ciudad muy activa, socialmente diversa y con un espíritu de lucha, el cual siempre está buscando el Progreso y el desarrollo.

With the fall of the military dictatorship in 1958 and the establishment of a party system known as the IV Republic, the country in general but specifically the city of Caracas are immersed in an economic model clearly marked by Western capitalist thinking, where development and progress are leveraged by a considerable increase in consumption and that is when numerous commercial brands come to light in the Venezuelan landscape, Large billboards begin to be installed on the roofs of buildings or on the edges of highways, illuminated signs adorn the big boulevards and products begin to be known more by their brands than by their original names, this is how the Caracas society enters fully into the twentieth century and begins its journey through the twenty-first century, thus generating a consumer culture that is still present today.

Con la caída de la dictadura militar en el año 1958 y la instauración de un sistema partidista conocido como la IV República, el país en general pero específicamente la ciudad de Caracas se ven inmersos en un modelo económico claramente marcado por el pensamiento capitalista occidental, en donde el desarrollo y el progreso se ven apalancados por un aumento considerable del consumo y es allí cuando numerosas marcas comerciales salen a relucir en el panorama venezolano, grandes vallas publicitarias comienzan a instalarse en las azoteas de los edificios o en los bordes de las autopistas, letreros luminosos adornan los grandes bulevares y los productos comienzan a ser conocidos más por sus marcas que por sus nombres originales, es de esta forma como la sociedad caraqueña se adentra de lleno en el siglo XX y comienza su transitar por el siglo XXI, generando de esta forma una cultura consumista que incluso se encuentra presente hoy en día.

Con el triunfo de la Revolución Bolivariana en el año 1998, la promulgación de la nueva constitución en 1999 y el inicio de la denominada V República llegaría a Venezuela un sistema político que se caracterizaría por su ideología socialista, por lo tanto esto constituyó un choque de trenes entre la élite económica imperante y los miembros del nuevo gobierno, lo cual llevó a intensas disputas sociales políticas y económicas, las cuales cambiaron de forma definitiva el rostro de Venezuela y específicamente de la ciudad de Caracas.

On the north side of Plaza Venezuela in the geographical center of the city of Caracas, is one of the most important architectural complexes of the city, this is the Polar Center, which is the headquarters of the largest private company in the country, which sells food, beer, soft drinks and many other products of recognized international brands, among which stands out Pepsi Cola, the latter being one of the most recognized nationally the company decided to place at the top of the highest tower a huge sphere alluding to this trademark.

Del lado norte de la plaza Venezuela en pleno centro geográfico de la ciudad de Caracas, se encuentra uno de los complejos arquitectónicos más importantes de la ciudad, se trata del Centro Polar, el cual es sede de la empresa privada más grande del país, la cual comercializa alimentos, cervezas, bebidas gaseosas y muchos otros productos de reconocidas marcas internacionales, entre las cuales se destaca Pepsi Cola, al ser esta última una de las insignias más reconocidas a nivel nacional la empresa decidió colocar en La cúspide de la torre más alta una inmensa esfera alusiva a esta marca comercial.

The Pepsi Cola ball, as it was known by the common citizens, immediately became an icon of the city of Caracas, since it was not only a visual and geographical reference, but it also represented the pride of a sector of the society that saw in this symbol the way to development. But in a city as changing as Caracas, it is more than clear that nothing can be considered eternal and those icons or buildings that for us are immovable in reality are perfectly replaceable, it is in this way that in the midst of a great pulse between private enterprise and government many things were changing in the urban profile of Caracas, while some streets became boulevards, some office buildings became universities, the icons of capitalism were replaced and in this way the big advertising berries gave way to smooth walls and empty roofs, in this way some buildings regained their originality, while a huge void remained in the hearts of many people.

La pelota de la Pepsi Cola como era conocido por el común de los ciudadanos se constituyó de forma inmediata como un icono de la ciudad de Caracas, ya que no solo era una referencia visual y geográfica, sino que ella representaba el orgullo de un sector de la sociedad que miraba en ese símbolo el camino hacia el desarrollo. Pero en una ciudad tan cambiante como Caracas, está más que claro que nada se puede considerar eterno y aquellos iconos o edificaciones que para nosotros son inamovibles en realidad son perfectamente reemplazables, es de esta forma como en medio de un gran pulso entre la empresa privada y el gobierno muchas cosas fueron cambiando en el perfil urbano de Caracas, mientras algunas calles se volvían bulevares, algunos edificios de oficina se volvían universidades, los iconos del capitalismo se fueron sustituyendo y de esta forma las grandes bayas publicitarias le dieron paso a paredes lisas y techos vacíos, de esta forma algunos edificios recobraron su originalidad, tiempo quedaba un enorme vacío en el corazón de muchas personas.

It is not my intention to take sides in one or another side of the politics of my country, with this publication I just want to show you a little of the history of the city of Caracas, show you how changing and also alive is this city and at the same time give you a photographic series taken some time ago, but which happen to be in black and white and therefore I think they are ideal to leave them captured in this community.

No es mi intención tomar partido en uno u otro bando de la política de mi país, con esta publicación solo busco mostrarles un poco de la historia de la ciudad de Caracas, demostrarles qué tan cambiante y también viva es esta urbe y al mismo tiempo regalarles una serie fotográfica tomada hace algún tiempo, pero que casualmente están en blanco y negro y por lo tanto me parecen ideales para dejarlas plasmadas en esta comunidad.
