A veces los autores se toman la libertad de interpretar la Historia de manera ficiticia, alteran el ritmo de los acontecimientos e introducen diferentes variables de lo que pudo haber sido. Es lo que conocemos por ucronías, un género interesante que sirve para imaginar diferentes escenarios del acontecer humano…

Esta miniserie The Plot Against America, estrenada en 2020 y de seis capítulos, narra una de esas ucronías. Está basada en un prestigioso libro de Philip Roth, que lleva por nombre el mismo título de la miniserie.

La historia se ubica en los Estados Unidos a comienzo de los años cuarenta, durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. En ese momento está prevista la realización de elecciones presidenciales.

Los aspirantes a la presidencia son Franklin D. Roosevelt, quien aspira a la reelección, un demócrata que ha mantenido cierta posición de neutralidad ante la guerra. No ha participado directamente en el conflicto pero apoya al Reino Unido, uno de los países que se enfrentan al nazismo alemán.

El otro contendiente es Charles Lindbergh, del partido Republicano, célebre piloto que se ha convertido en una de las grandes figuras mediáticas del momento. Lindberg ha logrado convencer a una buena parte del electorado con su oferta de evitar la participación de los Estados Unidos en la guerra.

Las dos posiciones crean en la sociedad norteamericana una gran polarización, que se siente fuertemente al interior de la comunidad judía.

Los partidarios de Roosevelt acusan a Lindbergh de mantener posiciones antisemitas, consideran un peligro apoyar a un gobierno como el de Hitler. Por su parte, los partidarios de Lindbergh están convencidos que el costo de participar en la guerra será muy alto para la sociedad norteamericana y que lo mejor es mantenerse al margen del conflicto.

Al final será Lindbergh quien gane las elecciones, y desde su posición de presidente creará las condiciones para que los norteamericanos vivan la terrible experiencia del nazismo en su propio país…

La historia que se cuenta en los seis capítulos es profundamente dramática. Toma como referencia una familia ficticia, los Levin, quienes son judíos de clase media y viven en la ciudad de Newark.

Antes de las elecciones esta familia lleva su vida normal, trabajan, estudian, salen de vacaciones... No tienen grandes conflictos, sus días transcurren entregados a las rutinas diarias y al fiel cumplimiento de sus rituales religiosos...

Pero está armonía se irá descomponiendo a medida que avance la campaña electoral y se profundizará luego de la elección presidencial. La familia no se podrá librar de las tensiones creadas por la polarización exterior. Al igual que afuera se crearan los bandos, y al igual que afuera la paz desaparecerá de esta familia…

Son muchas las cosas que me gustaron de la miniserie. Una de ellas es la ambientación, nos ubica perfectamente en esos años cuarenta.

Todos los detalles de la producción están bien cuidados, los mobiliarios de las casas y edificios públicos, el vestuario, y la cantidad de vehículos de esos años que circulan por las calles de la ciudad, nos transmiten la sensación de estar en ese tiempo. Cada vez que veo producciones de este tipo siempre me pregunto donde consiguen los productores tantos carros de esas épocas.

También cuenta la miniserie con excelentes interpretaciones. Todos los actores nos dejan actuaciones creíbles y convincentes, lo que constituye un gran reto en un guión donde los personajes son muy complejos. Acá no hay personajes planos, todos están sometidos a fuertes conflictos emocionales, a cada momento tienen que tomar decisiones difíciles que marcan el rumbo de sus vidas.

La miniserie me resultó muy cercana por los problemas que trata. A medida que la veía sentía que me hablaba de una historia conocida, la que he vivido en los últimos años.

Tal como pasó en esa sociedad ficticia también mi mundo cotidiano ha sentido el impacto de la polarización, de la intolerancia. Al igual que los Levin, mi familia y mi comunidad vieron desaparecer la armonía. Dejamos de vernos como iguales y empezamos a identificarnos con los bandos, a tomar partido por las ideologías. Al actuar de ese modo nuestra posibilidad de seguir viviendo de forma unida quedó hecha polvo…

Me impresionó mucho ver en la serie a los norteamericanos huyendo hacia Canadá, emigrando de su país para tratar de escapar del avance del nazismo. Dejando atrás todo lo que habían construido, sus negocios, sus trabajos, sus familias, sus amigos…

Es imposible ver esas imágenes sin identificarme con lo que he vivido, porque millones de mis compatriotas, incluyendo a mis hijos y mis amigos, también han salido en estampida, huyendo de la tragedia de un mundo que se desmorona paso a paso. Y tratando de encontrar afuera del país que los vio nacer la posibilidad de seguir viviendo, así sea comenzando de cero…

Creo que esta serie se merece un visionado. Sin embargo, debo aclarar que su mensaje no es ligero, más bien puede resultar un poco perturbador.

Nos deja profundas reflexiones de hasta dónde podemos llegar cuando tomamos malas decisiones colectivas, cuando anteponemos nuestra emocionalidad a la razón. Lo bueno es que también le abre una rendija a la esperanza y nos recuerda que a pesar de los errores cometidos lo importante es enmendar… Yo la conseguí en MAX. Se las recomiendo.

Before the elections this family leads their normal life, they work, study, go on vacation.... They have no major conflicts, their days are spent devoted to daily routines and the faithful fulfillment of their religious rituals...

But this harmony will be broken down as the electoral campaign progresses and will deepen after the presidential election. The family will not be able to free itself from the tensions created by the external polarization. Just like outside, sides will be created, and just like outside, peace will disappear from this family...

There are many things I liked about the miniseries. One of them is the setting, it places us perfectly in those forties.

All the details of the production are well taken care of, the furniture of the houses and public buildings, the costumes, and the amount of vehicles of those years that circulate through the streets of the city, give us the feeling of being in that time. Whenever I see productions of this type I always wonder where the producers get so many cars of those times.

The miniseries also has excellent performances. All the actors give credible and convincing performances, which is a great challenge in a script where the characters are very complex. Here there are no flat characters, all of them are subjected to strong emotional conflicts, at every moment they have to make difficult decisions that mark the course of their lives.

The miniseries was very close to me because of the problems it deals with. As I watched it, I felt that it spoke to me of a familiar story, the one I have lived in recent years.

Just as it happened in that fictitious society, my everyday world has also felt the impact of polarization and intolerance. Like the Levins, my family and my community saw harmony disappear. We stopped seeing each other as equals and began to identify with sides, to side with ideologies. By acting that way our chance to continue to live as one was shattered...

I was very impressed to see in the series the Americans fleeing to Canada, emigrating from their country to try to escape the advance of Nazism. Leaving behind everything they had built, their businesses, their jobs, their families, their friends...

It is impossible to see those images without identifying with what I have lived, because millions of my compatriots, including my children and my friends, have also left in stampede, fleeing the tragedy of a world that is crumbling step by step. And trying to find outside the country where they were born the possibility to continue living, even if it means starting from scratch...

I think this series deserves a viewing. However, I must clarify that its message is not light, rather it can be a bit disturbing.

It leaves us with deep reflections of how far we can go when we make bad collective decisions, when we put our emotionality before reason. The good thing is that it also opens a crack to hope and reminds us that despite the mistakes made, the important thing is to make amends... I got it at MAX. I recommend it.
