The Shroud of Turin: Coins Placed on Yeshua's Eyes?
Does the Shroud of Turin Preserve the Face of Yeshua?
The city of Turin is holding on to a potential treasure: the supposed linen burial cloth of Yeshua of Nazareth. The Shroud of Turin, is a length of linen cloth bearing the negative image of a man. Some claim the image depicts Jesus of Nazareth and the fabric is the burial shroud in which he was wrapped after crucifixion.
Looking Closely at the Eyes...
The eyes appear to have circular disks over the eyelids and some have speculated that these are coins - an ancient Judaic burial practice. The source of this tradition is in question: it parallels a Pagan practice of providing coins for the ferryman to cross the river Stix.
The Judean practice may be more practical. There was great discomfort in seeing the eyes of the dead. In order to prevent the eyelids from rising, due to the tightening of muscles after death, people preparing the body would place something weighted over the eyelids. Coins were perfect for this, since they were small, flat and relatively heavy.
The coins common to 30AD in Judea are shown below. If coins were place in the eyelids of Yeshua, it could appear similar to these below.
What is interesting is these coins seem to depict various biblical concepts (whether intentional or not).
The first is the bending stalks of grain from Joseph's dream.
The second and third depict a shepherd's staff, reminiscent of the various famous shepherds in the bible, such as Moses and David.
