Fake Silver Dollar?

The US has traded in silver dollars since early it it's formation, beginning in 1794 all the way to 1905, then resuming from 1920 - 1934. That's 126 years of minting actual SILVER silver dollars. There was an attempt to resume the Silver Peace Dollar in 1964, but it was suspended and the following year (1965), silver was replaced with "clad" coinage, which is copper sandwiched between silver looking metals. The Kennedy half-dollar retained 40% silver for a few more years, before that also was minted in "clad".

From 1935 - 1971 (36 years) there were no dollar coins minted at all, weaning the population from using coinage for dollars, instead filling their wallet with paper, instead of coin bag with silver.

Once the population became accustomed with paper dollars, the "silver" dollar made it's return. But it was a fake CLAD "silver" dollar. With zero silver in it. It was more of a novelty. Christmas gifts from grandma, or slot machines in Vegas. It was not used much as a circulating coin.

The Irony of Eisenhower

This new fake silver dollar was released in 1971 and continued until 1978. The obverse has President Eisenhower with a bit of a smirk on his face. Why is he depicted with a slight smile?

The Military Industrial Complex

On January 17th, 1961, in his final presidential speech, Eisenhower warned us to guard against the "military-industrial complex". How would the military and industry work together to acquire unwarranted influence? Did Eisenhower begin something that he regretted?

What Exactly Was He Warning Us About?

What is he talking about? Misplaced power? Unwarranted influence? Could it be..... the National Aeronautics and Space Act which he signed three years earlier, October 1st, 1958? Was he warning us to keep this new MILITARY organization in check and guard against its "unwarranted influence".

And yes, in case you didn't know, NASA is military.

Misplaced Power, Unwarranted Influence

The amount of unwarranted influence and misplaced power that this particular MILITARY administration has acquired over the years is unmeasured. In 2024, the budget for NASA is over $77 Million... per DAY!

How is this money used? For rockets, for science, for education, for.... INFLUENCE. And what greater way to influence people, is to put images of your greatest accomplishment on the US silver dollar.

The fake silver dollar.

Placing the image of Eisenhower on the coin advertising the very "Military-Industrial Complex" that he warned us about, is ironic. Placing the image symbolizing the moon landing on a FAKE silver dollar is also ironic.

They just can't help themselves!
