Yogyakarta Adventure #5 : Reliving the Past Anew at Sonobudoyo Museum

Hello Hivers! As promised in our last adventure at the Sonobudoyo Museum, today we will dive into the final chapter of my visit, highlighting the fascinating audio-visual room. If the previous parts focused on traditional and antique artifacts, this room offers something completely different yet equally captivating. Here, we'll discover stories from the past brought to life through stunning audio-visual media.

If you haven't read the previous parts of this adventure series, I highly recommend you do so to get a full experience of the journey. You can find the previous stories through the following links:

Alright, let's dive back into the adventure! Now, imagine this: you're climbing up to the top floor of the Sonobudoyo Museum, anticipation building with every step. As you reach the summit, you enter a grand and magnificent hall with red-painted walls, exuding a sense of boldness and enthusiasm. This interactive room comprises at least six sections: Sumbu Filosofi, Tembang Dolanan, Cerita Rakyat, Lorong Waktu, Kapal Kinetik, and Jemparingan. The tagline of this room, "Reliving the Past Anew," perfectly encapsulates the museum's mission to keep the past alive by adapting to modern technology and contemporary styles.

Throughout the room, you'll find various media, from epic murals with vibrant color combinations to screens of various shapes and sizes, narrating different stories from ancient times. The murals are incredibly detailed, and the stories on the screens are both educational and entertaining, making history come alive in a very engaging way.

There is also a special room designed like a cinema, with a large screen and an outstanding audio system, creating an immersive experience that transports you back in time. During my visit, the film playing was about the Siege of Batavia, beautifully animated and historically rich. The Siege of Batavia was a significant event during the Dutch colonial period, where local forces attempted to reclaim the city from the Dutch. The animation depicted the strategic battles and the heroic efforts of the local fighters, providing a vivid and educational experience.

After spending over 20 minutes in the cinema room, I continued my tour to the section featuring the kinetic ship mounted on the wall. This display vividly showcases the maritime history of Indonesia, emphasizing the importance of ships in connecting the vast archipelago and facilitating trade and cultural exchange.

Next, I explored the Jemparingan room, dedicated to traditional archery. Here, the museum provides several Virtual Reality (VR) setups where visitors can experience traditional archery firsthand. This innovative addition is truly remarkable, as it blends historical practice with cutting-edge technology, offering a unique and interactive experience. Besides the VR game, there are also other interactive attractions on the same floor, although I couldn't document them due to the crowd and dim lighting with flickering lights.

In the Sumbu Filosofi section, there is a detailed replica of Yogyakarta, explaining the foundational values of Yogyakarta's globally recognized culture. This part delves into the philosophical axis of Yogyakarta, connecting significant landmarks and explaining their cultural and historical importance.

The last section is Tembang Dolanan, which showcases traditional children's songs. These songs are more than just melodies; they are a unique way of building character, teaching values like honesty, cooperation, responsibility, mutual respect, and respect for parents. Through these songs, children learn important life lessons in a fun and engaging way.

In addition to the audio-visual media and the fascinating games, I was also impressed by how all the information is provided not only in Indonesian and English but also in traditional Javanese script, enhancing the cultural experience.

Well, here we are at the end of the post, which also means the end of my story at the Sonobudoyo Museum. If you ever visit Yogyakarta, this museum is a must-see. With a ticket price of less than $1 USD, you can enjoy and enrich your understanding of the incredible cultural heritage of this region. The blend of tradition and modern technology here is truly exceptional. Don't miss it!

Although this concludes my visit to the Sonobudoyo Museum, I still have plenty of stories to share about my Yogyakarta adventure. Thank you so much for following along. I'd love to hear your thoughts about the story, so feel free to leave a comment. If you enjoyed it, I’d really appreciate your support by giving it an upvote or even sharing it so more people can read about this incredible place. Until next time, see you!
