Update On ASUU Strike
The ASUU(Academic Staff Union of the Universities) strike has been going on for six months now. The association has still not come to an agreement with the federal government in their back-and-forth meetings made during the strike. I read an article where the Federal government said they don't have money to pay the association all the royalties they promised the association.
The Federal government has once again proved they are a failure in this country, the government even tried to manipulate the media to make it seem ASUU are the bad guys. One of the association chairmen has released a statement saying the Federal government has told them no work no pay, which means if ASUU refused to resume their various school activities then the government will also refuse to pay them their royalties and salaries.
The Association chairman gave the government their verdict saying they are not backing down from the strike and that the real strike has begun. The Associated Chairpersons led by Comrade Christian Opata, and his counterpart at the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, Prof. Chinedu Aguba had this to say "Nigerians who have been listening to the media propaganda waged by the Federal Government may be carried away by such propaganda. ASUU has tried all it can to resolve the issues leading to the ongoing strike action, but the Federal Government is also doing all it can to scuttle the efforts of the Union. Be that as it may, one pertinent thing is that truth cannot be hidden, if you bury it today, it will germinate tomorrow.
“Our bone of contention with the government of Nigeria is that a government signed an agreement with the Union as far back as 2019 and that agreement has been reneged on consistently and persistently by the same government. The government has been paying deaf ears each time the Union called for a renegotiation of the agreement and it has also toyed with the reports of all the committees set up to find lasting solutions to recurrent ASUU strikes in Nigeria. I read another article where another organisation called CONUA(The Congress of University Academics) ASUU's rivals are insisting the federal government register their association. The CONUA have made it clear that they are not part of the strike and are willing to accept the federal government's offers to stop the strike.
ASUU has come out to warn the government not to register CONUA and that they will press legal action against the association. It's already a full-blown war between ASUU and CONUA, and the members of the CONUA association have begun to protest in UNILAG against the strike, not sure but I think things might get ugly between these two associations.
Recently the Federal government has said they have reached an agreement with the United States of America for transferring a total of 23 million dollars looted by the former head of state Sani Abacha, only God knows how this man held all this money the government has been recovering since 1998. The Federal government has made it clear the money will be used for infrastructure if the government head is correct they should know by now that ASUU should be the first to settle with that money but of course, they have misplaced priority.
So guys that will be all for today, thanks once again for stopping by, have a great weekend.
Wait a sec! Who are the CONUA? Like do you have any idea the personalities behind this organization? And Nigeria has $23 Dollars outside??? How?! This is really insightful. Permission to share on Dreemport? 🙏
CONUA is just like ASUU another independent association of academic staff unions, its national coordinator, Dr Niyi Sunmonu, and national Publicity Secretary, Dr Ernest Nwoke, are not that popular. Nigeria is still recovering money looted by Abacha and I am not sure if they are done with the recovery of Nigeria's looting funds. You are free to share my post.
What a country with misplaced priorities, what is the essence of making infrastructures when the people who will continue to add value to society are out of school?
We are been played, imagine another organization coming up to disrupt things, the strike as lasted well enough and the government definitely don't have any plans for the youth. It is pointless hoping for a miracle at this point and my prediction still stands that this strike might not be over until after the election.
Nigerian youth should keep themselves busy with things that could create opportunities for them as time goes by because the government does not care about us .
The Federal government have turned the University in the country into a joke, even if a person gets a degree a high chance of getting a job is very slim. I just hope God will save this country.
I would rather let my kid learn a skill than go to the higher institution at the current stage of the country is now. Did you notice students end up learning a skill to survive after spending more than the usual years in school.
Yes, I do, I have a friend of mine whose father graduated from the University with a first-class chartered accounting degree but today he drives a motorcycle because he couldn't get a job. Nigeria has killed a lot of dreams.
I know I have heard of a rival association of ASUU. And they are always against what ASUU does, so they are CONUA. Funny names all around.
For me, the thing is these guys that is both the government and ASUU do not have time for us students. And in as much as we are insignificant, salaries must be paid, the FG wants to make sure of somethings. All in all, make all of them get out!
The funny thing is that ASUU demands no dey finish if the government settle with then what the assurance that another strike won't happen again, true true make all of them get out.
Yes, their demands will never finish. But at times I do say if FG meets a whole demand once then the next demand would not be cumbersome to handle. The whole thing happening now is because of thise things that have added up like 11 years back..
I love that line you said, "If you bury it today, it will germinate tomorrow." I've never heard that expression before.

The only thing to do right now is to really maximize this period and do something productive...these people don't care about us at all.
You are right, because if people wait for FG and ASUU their time will just waste.
