"Preserving Freedom: The Battle for Free Speech and Press in Today's World"
Good day, everyone, and welcome to my blog. So it's day three of the Mayininleo initiative, and the topic for today is quite interesting, so without further delay, let's dive into the topic. Free speech, and freedom of the press all have one thing in common which is "FREEDOM" It's in human nature to express themselves and be able to do things without being questioned, but there are rules in place so people don't get out of order and do things which is against the law of nature and also human ethics.
Freedom of speech and press is not taken seriously in this part of the world because the people in power see themselves above the law of the country and can decide to do whatever they feel is right in their own eyes without facing consequences. A few months ago, there was a government official who proposed that the federal government of Nigeria pass a bill that would regulate the use of social media in the country. These bills will also see the arrest of any individual who talks badly against the ruling government, which sounds insane.
It sparked reactions online, and people came out to attack the politician who suggested the idea and even brought out receipts of the past criticism he made on Twitter to the party which was in power at that time. Freedom of speech is a fundamental human right that should not be crossed at any point. No matter how triggering or stupid the comment may sound, the individual should never be silent about sharing an opinion, but unfortunately, it's not taken seriously in this part of the world. I remember when a Twitter user said something about the former president's wife, he was quickly apprehended by the DSS and taken into custody, which was a very wrong step taken by the former president.
On social media platforms, it is just the same as many times people have been banned and blocked for sharing their opinions. The war in Ukraine and Gaza has been an eye-opener that some social media platforms and news outlets filter what they want the general audience to read and see on their pages. There was a user on TikTok who came out to talk about the way Kdrama films have always demoralized Africa, but her video was taken down by TikTok just because she aired her opinion, which was not wrong but TikTok decided the video did not sit well and decided to take it down.
Other social media platforms like Instagram have been filtering content during this war in Ukraine and Gaza. The media, which is the backbone for free speech, is not left out of filtering news shared with the public, and I have shared an incident that happened with Al Jazeera in one of my posts. That is why Hive and its members have been promoting the blockchain so that users outside this space can know there is a place that values their productivity and won't stop them from speaking out whenever they want without their account getting taken down.
Elon Musk has been a big advocate of free speech on Twitter. The X owner has made different posts about free speech and how Twitter is pushing to make free speech happen on the platform at all costs. There is a saying that no matter how you try to silence a deprived voice from getting what it wants, even if the voice is silent it only gets stronger in the dark and once it can't be contained anymore it will roar out loud and will never stop until it has achieved its goal. So, guys, that will be all for now. Thanks for stopping by, and have a good day.
