The consequences of a dog rescue [ENG-ESP]

Greetings dear friends of Hive Pets, just a few days ago I talked about the difficult coexistence between my two pets and Balto, a little dog I picked up from the street and who I promised to help. The days went by, Balto was growing, Coco could not tolerate him, while I was begging for someone to adopt him, however, in the middle of all the stress of feeding and taking care of three dogs, Muñeca began to show symptoms of being suffering from an illness. He lost his appetite and began to secrete fluid from his eyes, and he couldn't open them. My suspicion from experience is that it could be Distemper or canine distemper. As soon as possible, I consulted a friend who leads a foundation for pets in street conditions and she told me that it could be an allergy, I gave him an antiallergic, but he did not improve.
The next day, Muñeca did not want to eat anything, so I had to give her homemade saline solution with an injector. Coco, on the other hand, was eating, but I noticed that he was leaving food, something that is not usual for him, while Balto was eating and drinking water normally. Seeing Doll's situation, I decided to take her to the vet, the friend of the foundation recommended me an office where they did not charge so much and they would also do a complete hematology to rule out Canine Ehrlichiosis, a disease caused by the tick bite.
Doll's first visit to the Vet
In almost 6 years that Muñeca has been at home, she has never been sick enough to take her to a doctor. Once she had amebiasis and I cured it with the advice of a veterinarian who was out of the country at the time. Muñeca behaved very well, she waited patiently for her turn, I saw her shivering, I thought it was cold, she also did it in the middle of the consultation, but the doctor said it was fear.
When we went in I explained to the Dr. the symptoms and my suspicions of Distemper, he said no, he examined her, took her temperature and took a blood sample. She had no swollen glands, no fever, however, because of the symptoms he said it was Canine Ehrlichiosis, he sent her treatment and B complex. The test was negative for hemoparasites, but he still had to give him the treatment, that was what the veterinarian said.
A wrong diagnosis....and my dogs on the verge of dying
Doll started the treatment, however, with three doses I did not see any improvement, besides, I noticed that she was shaking at home, it can't be, the Dr. had said it was fear and being at home, she had no reason to be afraid. To top it off, Coco stopped eating, if it was Canine Ehrlichiosis, only Doll would be affected, but no, it was a virus. When I told the friend at the foundation about Doll's tremors, she immediately told me that it was very possible that she had Distemper, which affects the central nervous system. She recommended me a medicine that was not exactly for dogs, but with it they had saved dogs with distemper. I looked for it and it was out of stock, however, I found it just where Muñeca had had the consultation.
Now the dosage had to be determined, I did it with the weight of the dogs, however, the dogs had to be injected in the thigh and I did not know how to do it. When I talked to the vet who took care of Muñe to inject them, he refused to treat them because according to him, distemper has no cure. I still bought the medicine, I told the manager that the doctor had given me the dose when she saw me talking to him, I lied to save my dogs. Then I talked to a vet that I had known for years and he offered to inject them without charging me anything, I just had to take them to his house and so I did. It was 5 days of injections and serum, but they took the vitamins for 15 days. Thank God my dogs overcame the distemper and today they are healthy.
Balto was adopted......the lesson I learned with his rescue
In the middle of that storm, a co-worker told me that her children wanted a puppy, so I told her about Balto, she saw his pictures and agreed to adopt him. She had to take him abruptly because of the illness that Muñeca and Coco had, it was not convenient for him to stay at home. Balto did not develop symptoms, but I am almost sure he was the virus carrier. After several weeks, I read that rescuing a puppy from the street is not as simple as it sounds, they often bring viral diseases with them and infect pets already at home. They are carriers, but they do not develop the disease.

When I brought Coco home, Muñeca was vaccinated and maybe that's why nothing happened, but when I brought Balto home, the vaccine had already expired, they were all unprotected. What you have to do when rescuing animals in street conditions is to take them to the doctor for an evaluation to determine their health condition. In my intention to help Balto, I omitted this step and caused a problem.
Distemper is a deadly and highly contagious disease, I was able to notice the symptoms and I omitted the doctor's indications because I already had the experience with some of my dogs. There are three types of distemper, one attacks the digestive system, another one attacks the respiratory system, and the worst, the central nervous system. I knew the second and the third one, the one that attacks the nervous system has no cure, and in the final stage, the dogs convulse. Distemper has a cure if treated at the beginning as I did, however, this disease has symptoms very similar to Canine Ehrlichiosis, and there I came the problem, we would be giving the dog a wrong treatment, with that we give time to distemper to advance. The good news, besides the fact that Muñeca and Coco are safe and sound, is that Balto is happy in his new home, I went to visit him and he recognized me, he was as affectionate as always.

Saludos estimados amigos de Hive Pets, apenas hace unos días hablé sobre la difícil convivencia entre mis dos mascotas y Balto, un perrito que recogí de la calle y a quién prometí ayudar. Los días fueron pasando, Balto iba creciendo, Coco no lo toleraba, mientras yo rogaba porque alguien lo quisiera adoptar, sin embargo, en medio de todo el estrés que llevaba consigo alimentar y cuidar a tres perros, Muñeca comenzó a manifestar síntomas de estar padeciendo alguna enfermedad. Perdió el apetito y comenzó a segregar líquido por los ojos, además, no los podía abrir. Mi sospecha por experiencia es que podía tratarse de Distemper o moquillo canino. Por lo más rápido, le consulté a una amiga que lidera una fundación de mascotas en condición de calle y me dijo que podía ser una alergia, le di un antialérgico, pero no mejoró.
Al día siguiente, Muñeca no quiso comer nada, me tocó darle suero casero con una inyectadora de manera obligada. Coco por su parte, estaba comiendo, pero noté que estaba dejando comida, algo que no es usual en el, mientras que Balto, comía y tomaba agua de manera normal. Viendo la situación de Muñeca, decidí llevarla al veterinario, la amiga de la fundación me recomendó un consultorio donde no cobraban tan caro y además le harían una hematología completa para descartar Ehrlichiosis Canina, una enfermedad que produce la picadura de la garrapata.
La primera visita de Muñeca al Veterinario
En casi 6 años que Muñeca tiene en casa, nunca se había enfermado como para llevarla a un médico. Una vez tuvo amibiasis y se la curé con asesoría de un veterinario que para ese entonces se encontraba fuera del país. Muñeca se portó muy bien, esperó pacientemente su turno, la vi temblando, pensé que era frío, también lo hizo en plena consulta, pero el médico dijo que era miedo.
Cuando entramos le expliqué al Dr. los síntomas y mis sospechas de Distemper, él dijo que no, la examinó, le tomó la temperatura y le sacó una muestra de sangre. No tenía los ganglios inflamados, no tenía fiebre, no obstante, por los síntomas dijo que se trataba de Ehrlichiosis Canina, le mandó el tratamiento y complejo B. El examen salió negativo para hemoparásitos, pero aún así debía administrarle el tratamiento, fue lo que dijo el médico veterinario.
Un diagnóstico errado….y mis perros a punto de morir
Muñeca comenzó el tratamiento, sin embargo, con tres dosis no vi ninguna mejora, además, noté que temblaba en casa, no puede ser!, el Dr. había dicho que era miedo y estando en casa, no tenía por qué tenerlo. Para colmo, Coco dejó de comer, si fuera Ehrlichiosis Canina, solo sería Muñeca la afectada, pero no, se trataba de un virus. Cuando le dije a la amiga de la fundación sobre los temblores de Muñeca, ella de inmediato me dijo que era muy posible que tuviera Moquillo o distemper, el que afecta el sistema nervioso central. Me recomendó un medicamento que no era precisamente para perros, pero que con el habían salvado a perros con moquillo. Lo busqué y estaba agotado, no obstante, justamente lo encontré donde Muñeca había tenido la consulta.
Ahora había que determinar la dosis, lo hice con el peso de los perros, sin embargo, los perros tenían que ser inyectados en el muslo y yo no sabía hacerlo. Cuando hablé con el veterinario que atendió a Muñe para que los inyectara, se negó a darles tratamiento porque según él, el moquillo no tiene cura. Igual compré el medicamento, le dije a la encargada que el médico me había dado la dosis cuando ella me vio hablando con él, mentí para salvar a mis perros. Luego, hablé con un veterinario que yo conocía hace años y se ofreció a inyectarlos sin cobrarme nada, solo debía llevarlos a su casa y así lo hice. Fueron 5 días de inyecciones y suero, pero las vitaminas las tomaron por 15 días. Gracias a Dios mis perros superaron el moquillo y hoy están sanos.
Balto fue adoptado……la lección que aprendí con su rescate
En medio de aquella tormenta, un compañero de trabajo me dijo que sus hijos querían un cachorro, entonces, yo le hablé de Balto, vio sus fotos y aceptó adoptarlo. Tuvo que llevárselo abruptamente por la enfermedad que tenían Muñeca y Coco, no era conveniente que permaneciera en casa. Balto no desarrolló síntomas, pero estoy casi segura que fue el portador de virus. Después de varias semanas, leí que rescatar un perrito de la calle no es tan simple como suena, ellos suelen traer enfermedades virales consigo y contagiar a las mascotas que ya están en casa. Son portadores, pero no desarrollan la enfermedad.

Cuando traje a Coco a casa, Muñeca estaba vacunada y tal vez por eso no pasó nada, pero cuando traje a Balto, ya se había vencido la vacuna, todos estaban desprotegidos. Lo que hay que hacer cuando se rescatan animales en condición de calle es llevarlos a consulta para que les hagan una evaluación y determinar su condición de salud. En mi propósito de ayudar a Balto, omití este paso y causé un problema.
El moquillo es una enfermedad mortal y altamente contagiosa, yo pude darme cuenta de los síntomas y omití las indicaciones del doctor porque ya tuve la experiencia con algunos de mis perros. Son tres tipos de moquillo, uno ataca al sistema digestivo, otro al sistema respiratorio, y el peor, al sistema nervioso central. Conocí el segundo y el tercero, el que ataca al sistema nervioso no tiene cura, y en la etapa final, los perros convulsionan. El moquillo tiene cura si se trata al comienzo como lo hice yo, sin embargo, esta enfermedad tiene síntomas muy parecidos a la Ehrlichiosis Canina, y allí vine el problema, le estaríamos suministrando al perro un tratamiento errado, con eso le damos tiempo al moquillo de avanzar. La buena noticia, además de que Muñeca y Coco están sanos y salvos, es que Balto está feliz en su nuevo hogar, lo fui a visitar y me reconoció, fue tan cariñoso como siempre.

I understood your attitude because I have also gone through the same situation, I have managed to save my little animals from distemper and others like tick disease, but the battle against cancer I could not win...it was sad yes, very sad.
