A Journey Through Time: Exploring the Former Monastery of San Faustino in Brescia

Hello, friends of this fantastic community!

Today, in this post, I want to share with you some of the photos I took in Brescia during the autumn days of Fai. I want to take you on a virtual journey to explore a remarkable place located just steps away from Piazza della Loggia, certainly one of the most famous squares in Brescia, a place that often goes unnoticed but holds great historical value and is currently owned by the University of Brescia.

I'm talking about the former Monastery of San Faustino, a site of historical significance as it is believed to be the final resting place of the Saints Faustino and Giovita, martyred in the third century under the Emperor Hadrian. In this place, Bishop Ramperto founded a Benedictine monastery. Unfortunately, around the 1700s, the monastery experienced a rapid decline, partly due to the suppression of religious orders by Napoleon when the place was transformed into a large barracks and partly into a farm.

Thanks to our volunteer guide who accompanied us, we had the opportunity to explore this former monastery. Today, only traces of the original monastery remain, as seen in the photos I've shared here. In the course of the 20th century, the building was completely restored and converted into classrooms for the University of Brescia. It's interesting to imagine how it was originally when it was the center of daily life, with activities like livestock and game breeding, kitchens for meal preparation, and the cells where the friars prayed and slept, now used as classrooms for university professors.

We had the opportunity to admire the most important cloister, known as the Abbot's cloister, where beautiful frescoes by Giandomenico Tiepolo can still be seen today. Additionally, we visited two large university lecture halls, which were once the refectory where the friars shared their meals, and a vast library, although many of the original books have been moved elsewhere because they were very old and needed preservation.

The visit was fascinating, although unfortunately, very little of the original monastery and convent have remained intact. However, some valuable artifacts have been preserved, including important frescoes and a portion of the original architecture that has been skillfully restored, and thanks to our guide, we were able to travel through imagination.

I hope you have enjoyed the photos I've shared, and as I mentioned earlier, I encourage you to visit Brescia because an experience like this is truly worth it.

Wishing you all a wonderful day, and I'll see you in my next post!
