El último y más antiguo (SPA-ENG)
El Abierto Británico de Golf, o el Open como se lo conoce en el ambiente de este deporte tan difícil y tradicional, es el campeonato major más antiguo del planeta, su primera edición se llevó a cabo en el año 1860 y salvo por algunos contratiempos ocasionales y de extrema gravedad como las guerras mundiales o la pandemia de COVID, nunca se dejó de jugar, a excepción del año 1871 por causas de las que no se tienen precisiones.
En sus comienzos se ideó como un torneo para elegir al campeón del golf de toda Gran Bretaña ya que el año anterior había fallecido Allan Robertson, considerado el más importante golfista hasta ese momento, esa primera edición se jugó en el Prestwick Golf Club, ubicado en Escocia, en ese momento solo se permitían jugadores profesionales y solo 8 participaron del torneo, se jugó a 3 rondas de 12 hoyos, todo en un solo día. Algo muy diferente al formato actual.
Las primeras once ediciones se jugaron en el mismo escenario y todos los ganadores fueron escoceses, aunque a partir del año 1861 se permitió la participación de aficionados. Una particularidad de aquellos primeros 11 años fue que el torneo tuvo como ganador en 4 oportunidades a Tom Morris Sr. y en 3 a su hijo Tom Morris Jr.
Como mencioné, en 1871 no se jugó y a partir del año 1872 comenzaron a rotar los links en que se desarrolla la competencia. En 1873 se jugó por primera vez en el Saint Andrews Links y a partir de allí la dirección del torneo ha sido siempre de The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews. En la actualidad el torneo rota entre 9 clubes diferentes que forman parte de una exclusiva lista.
Hasta 1890 el Open fue ganado en exclusividad por golfistas escoceses pero en ese año se rompió la racha cuando se impuso por primera vez un inglés, John Ball Sr., desde ese momento y hasta 1907 se alternaron entre Escocia e Inglaterra las nacionalidades de los ganadores pero como todo, llegó a su fin la supremacía de jugadores británicos y en ese año ganó por primera vez un latino: el francés Arnaud Massy, luego se volvió a la rutina de escoceses e ingleses hasta el receso por la primera guerra mundial, retornada la competencia, en 1921 ganó por primera vez un norteamericano: Jock Hutchinson, desde ese momento comenzó una nueva era con el dominio del tradicional torneo por parte de los norteamericanos. El único sudamericano en ganar el Open Británico ha sido el maestro Roberto De Vicenzo, un hito en la historia del golf mundial para el beneplácito de todos los argentinos en primer lugar y Latinoamérica toda después.
El próximo jueves 16/07 comienza la edición número 152 en los links del Royal Troon’s Old Course, un club fundado en el año 1878 y ubicado en el condado de Troon, South Ayrshire, Escocia. El campeón del año anterior y defensor del título es el norteamericano Brian Harman quien no ha tenido grandes actuaciones en la presente temporada y el argentino Emiliano Grillo que terminó 6to. en esa última edición será el único representante del país.
Un campeonato apasionante que definirá el cuarto y último torneo major que compone el Grand Slam de golf anual.
Solo una semana después del Abierto Británico, varios de los que competirán en Escocia se volverán a ver las caras en París, en esta oportunidad además de competir por sí mismos, también lo harán por su bandera.

De los torneos grandes del golf, el que menos me llamaba la atención era este abierto británico, el Open como se conoce. No sabía que era el más antiguo de todos, el golf es una disciplina que vengo siguiendo desde muy poco tiempo. Cada vez aprendiendo de la mano de usted mi estimado, todo con sus conocimientos que los plasma muy bien en sus escritos.

Gracias @franz54, es un deporte extremadamente difícil que se lo ve bastante sencillo observado por TV. Pero esos deportistas se pasan 8, 10 y más horas practicando todos los días para jugar de la manera en que lo hacen.
Creo que es el deporte que más dedicación a la práctica necesita para jugar en el primer nivel mundial.
