Juliet's House, Verona, Italy - Visiting a very busy tourist attraction inspired by Shakespeare
While in Verona, Italy in October, we made a trip to see Juliets House and balcony. We had to really, we could not go all the way to Verona and not see it - right !?
Its location is right in the centre of Verona, along quite a small busy street, and then through an arch into a courtyard. The setting is maybe not quite as magical as I might have imagined, but man was it busy !
We had passed it the day before and the queues were quite long and stretched along the street, so we decided to go first thing the next morning, and still had to wait about an hour to get in. Old Billy Shakespeare is certainly very popular to this day.
Rather intriguing was the statue of poor Juliet down in the courtyard. Everyone was lining up to take their photo with her, with the custom being to rub her breasts for luck - poor girl !!!
There was another copy of the statue inside the house itself - which was cordoned off so that it could not be harassed !
The museum/house had some nice displays, and you could get out and stand on the balcony to take a picture. The stairs and passageways were quite small so they would only let in so many people at a time and hence that was why you had to queue for so long, however, atleast it meant that once you were inside, there was not a sea of people there - there was a few but it was not overly crowded (in my opinion).
I guess its the romance of it all which was attracting a lot of couples, but also the fact that everyone has heard of Romeo and Juliet, so why wouldnt you go there if you were in town !
I think its free to get into the courtyard and see the statue and balcony, but you have to pay to go inside and stand at the balcony. We did that by buying the Verona card which gives you a discount on the entry price of a number of the main attractions - which wa a good way of doing it.
I find the picture above quite funny - the costumes are set out so that you can pose behind them and take a picture with your head poking up as if wearing the costume, except if you are my wife - as can be seen she is too short !
The house had quite a few floors, and as you went up through them you started getting views across other courtyards and things higher up in the buildings around it which I found quite interesting.
And at the top I particularly like the views across the orange tiled roofs of the city - it was quite nice indeed !
Well it was fun to go, and my wife and daughter quite enjoyed it - and if you are a Shakespeare fan then how could you ever miss it ?! Anyway, worth the visit - so all good !

Wow good to see so many people still appreciate the old love stories, looks like a decent place to visit. You could have lift your wife up to take the picture in that costume 😎
Thanks for sharing such a lovely place!!!
Aye it was really nice. And yes, I could have, but it was funnier to watch her struggling !

I didn't realise there was a real house. How does it fit in the story, do you know? Did it inspire Shakespeare to write the story, or is it a true story based in Verona? Sorry, I'm really illiterate in Engish literature (yes, shameful, I know 😄)
The story is set in Verona, I'm guessing Shakespeare never actually visited Verona, but read about the city and decided to write a story based there. It was probably after the story was written that the house was assigned to be the one - to then be a tourist attraction !

This is so cool. Although I guess the crowd takes a lot of the romance out of the whole thing. But must surely be worth a visit anyway.

Aye, it was worth the visit in the end, although the queues were crazy and it was over crowded in the courtyard.

Hmmm, it's kinda weird to rub her breasts for luck. 😅 I don't know what to feel. LOL
Interesting house. Too bad I'm not so familiar with literature, after college I just forget all that I learned hahaha
I have to agree with you, I dont think that rubbing the breasts is quite acceptable/PC these days, so we didnt do it - however, I could see that most people were doing it for fun, both men and women equally.
But, yes, a nice place to visit.

The immortal tragic love story,....the book has been the basis for numerous theatre plays, ballet performances, movies,.....but the best way is to see it in person! Great post!
Aye, it is an immortal story, and my daughter had been studying it in school, so timing was perfect for us to visit - she loved seeing it !
