Glasgow - the largest city in Scotland with superb sights and architecture

avatar

I was in Glasgow for a stag do this weekend ! I survived as did the stag ! I hadnt been out in Glasgow for a quite a while, so it was quite nice. And I managed to take in a few sights in the passing while there too.

Glasgow city centre has quite incredible architecture, but to be fair there is lovely architecture throughout the city - but the city centre is quite special. I really love this church above (St George's Tron Church). Its in Nelson Mandela place. Glasgow was a very early supporter of Nelson Mandela while he was still in prison - and the city let the world know exactly what they thought of that - and they renamed this street after him while he was there. Glasgow really did help the movement to get him freed by supporting him early - and publicising his imprisonment.

Above is George Square which is right in the city centre, with city hall at the far end. Its quite a beautiful place, and they often have celebrations, exhibitions and all kinds there.

Thats the gallery of modern art above, designed to look like a greek temple - its lovely.

And the statue above is probably the most famous one in Glasgow. A traffic cone is always placed on the statues head (only because its funny). And no matter how often the local council remove the traffic cone, you can bet that another one re-appears over night !

Above is the inside of Central Station - one of the two main city centre stations (The other being Queens Street). Its a beautiful Victorian Station - I love the steel work roof.

I spotted the abandoned building above while we were in Shawlands (an area in the city). The artwork is just stunning, and with the bushes, etc around it left to grow, it just looks fantastic.

Above is a view down one of the main streets in Shawlands. And its quite a typical view for Glasgow. You can see typical red sandstone tenements (apartment buildings) on the left - which can be found all over the city.

We went to quite a cool pub while on the stag party. It was called 'fore play' and its a crazy golf pub ! Above is the outdoor seating area.

It was inside an old converted industrial building - the pic above does not do it justice, but it was quite quirky. Plus the food and cocktails were really nice !

Thats the entrance above - quite non-descript - but I'd definitely go there again - it was fun !

Above is another view of some of the buildings in the city centre - with the one on the right housing the hard rock cafe.

And above is the domed roof of the counting house, which used to be a bank but was converted into a pub back in the 90s I think. I just love those old ornate ceilings !

Well, it was lovely to go back over to Glasgow for a night out - I thoroughly enjoyed it !

It brings back some memories. I haven't been to Glasgow in a long time. I love some of the stonework on those churches. Very nice contrast.

The architecture is so stunning and I wonder the inside part of that Church and the ceilings. Must be more awesome being inside of that place.

I've never been inside that church - maybe I need to try the next time I'm there !

The only time I have been there, I found it to be dark and not really inviting. The only thing I liked about it was the science museum. Maybe I should give it another go 😄

Thats a shame - its normally a fairly nice city, and many people find it quite friendly.

The pictures are nice but I was hoping to see more pictures from the stag party, are you keeping those secret or for another post?

Voted on ListNerds!

Ooh, you've just inspired me to sort out a trip to Glasgow in September. There's a knitting conference "Fleece to Fashion" giving me the ideal excuse to spend a couple of days there!

I like the crazy golf pub, that's a great idea. I'm useless at it, of course!

I imagine that crazy golf plus alcohol is a downward spiral!
