Maybe an Even Better Time to Start Learning About Unreal Engine (Unity Upset and Blockchain Integration)
Back on April 10, 2022 I posted "Probably a Good Time to Start Learning About Unreal Engine". I guess maybe now might be even better. Maybe.
Back in late 2020 unrealengine.com announced a competition involving learning how to use the Unreal Engine platform. There were five courses to take for the competition and I blogged about my progress. Since then I've put learning about Unreal Engine lower in the queue to focus on learning Python programming.
What I really like about Unreal Engine is its ability to generate pretty good photorealistic environments in 3D. Like most others I also like the equitable royalty-free payment grace period. If I use Unreal Engine for a commercial product I don't have to pay Epic Games, Inc. any royalties until my product exceeded $1 million USD in gross revenue. After that the royalty fee is 5%. Calculations different for revenue from selling in the Epic Games Store.
Great deal, right? It seems better to me than Unity's new fee changes.
I didn't know this until I saw this article yesterday - Unreal Engine has a plugin for blockchain integration. From what I can tell with my limited knowledge Polygon and Avalanche are a few of the blockchains that can be integrated into games. I don't think Hive or even Bitcoin can be integrated yet. If that's wrong please let me know in a reply to this post. I am still a beginner and I want to know more about this.
There's no guarantee that Unreal Engine won't ever adopt a stricter fee structure in the future like Unity has. So probably now is a good time to start learning Unreal Engine AND an open source game engine like Godot.

Looks like good stuff. Looked at godot some a while back. Knew about Unity like some, but not about Unreal Engine's blockchain plugins. Probably limited to ethereum and few others with more smart contract support that bitcoin and Hive do not have (yet).
I've been trying to research this more and understand it. Apparently blockchain integration is possible in Godot also. If I am understanding what I am reading it might be possible to custom integrate Hive into Unreal Engine using JSON RPC Request feature. The Unreal Engine plugin for blockchain license costs $299.99.
My understanding as a beginner is tenuous so take all this with a grain of salt. Anybody else who knows more than me please feel free to affirm or correct me.
The GoDot documentation appears to be more for encrypting and decrypting with "crypto" technology, but not "cryptocurrency. (From initial page.) Would have to read more to see more.
Think it is possible yes. However it looks like it is designed to work with smart contracts. So there would be additional work to replace smart contracts in another place in the "stack". Does support "custom" which would certainly include Hive.
You're probably right about that. I want to learn about creating smart contracts on Hive also. There's a lot I need to learn.
Yes. Some have been wanting to for years. Sounds like we are getting closer. We shall see what the latest developments are from Hivefest this week.

As a user of Godot (and having run away from Unity years ago after seeing the writing on the wall) and having written several utilities to connect Godot with Hive it is more than possible and given the open source nature of both projects a worthy addition to both ecosystems. I've been considering creating a 100% native godot-hive plugin. My current projects don't really have the need to connect to the chain, but there are several long term goals that could easily be hive backed.
I've started following you on Hive. Thanks for the reply. I spent a few hours watching YouTube videos about the unity drama. One of them apparently saw "the writing on the wall" like you during the Unity IPO back in 2020. I must admit that if I had been a Unity game developer I most likely wouldn't have seen the signs and have been really upset right now. I pity parallel universe @holovision.
As I learn more and more I am leaning toward just focusing on Godot when I start getting serious about learning game development to prototype my ideas. I am already learning python so GDScript will hopefully be comfortable for me to work with. Learning more about Godot might be my 2024 New Year's resolution.
Tim Sweeney of Epic Games has affirmed they will be sticking with their current royalty model. Unreal Engine looks great for 3D but sooner or later Tim Sweeney will retire and who knows if Epic Games will go into some weird direction then. I don't want to end up being one of those justifiably angry game developers I've been seeing in YouTube videos.
There are so many good Game engines out there to fit almost any niche. It's a shame that it takes a huge event like what happened with Unity to shine light on other projects. I'm sure you'll pick up GDscript pretty fast once you have the chance. I look forward to seeing what you come up with!
