My Terrifying Night: How a Friend's Ghost Stories Left Me Petrified
Most people tend not to agree there are humans, they pretend to be superheroes but when the problem arises they hide under shadows. Sometimes, there are certain stories we don’t need to hear, not because they may cause us any harm but for the sake of our psychology; it is best we stay away from being paralyzed with fear. What happened to me a few months ago made me relate it to today’s May Inleo prompt and the above-mentioned tale.
This was an experience I had when I went on a stroll with a friend who was sharing a harmless ghost story. During my second year in the university, I was preparing for an exam I would be having tomorrow. As a book lover, I can sit for hours reading without getting tired or feeling stressed; but one thing I had to take caution was the ability to relieve myself of the stretch event by walking or talking with my peers. On this fateful day, while relieving myself by strolling around the school premises, I met my colleague who was doing the same thing. However, his way of relief was different from mine because he stood at a particular spot for a long time. I approached him to ask what was wrong; he responded with a smile that made me feel I asked a useless question.
In his response, he told me he was thinking of lots of things; as curious as I am, I went to enquire about his thoughts. He asked what the time was – this was exactly 1.20 AM. He told if I believe that it is not everyone who walks around the school like I am doing that are humans, some are ghosts. Obviously, the university environment is very large and I will be unable to know all the students that are on the campus, but the aspect of ghosts got me bothered. I pondered, “Why is he having such a thought?” since I did not respond to his statement, he went further to tell me that ghosts exist.
He stated examples of what had been happening in his village, sometimes they would come back from the vigil and refuse to greet anyone on their way back because it is believed some people who walked on the streets at that time were ghosts. I regretted beginning the conversation from the onset because I began to suspect every student who passed by.
To make matters worse, he told me that some ghosts died as students so they came to visit where they often read either during the day or night. I sincerely don’t where he got such an ideology and why he would be standing alone to be thinking such a thing. I began to suspect that he was a ghost, lol. The conversation that began at 1.20 AM lasted till 3 AM meanwhile I had an exam to write in a few hours. The book I went back to read couldn’t be absorbed into my memory because of the worry of being sitting with a ghost.
From this incident, I learned a big lesson - the meeting with my friend's ghostly story left me with fear and anxiety, and also affected my ability to focus on my studies resulting in a fairly poor performance in an upcoming exam. While stories of the supernatural may seem harmless on the surface, they have the potential to deeply affect our psychology, leaving us vulnerable to irrational fears and anxieties.
Here is my May Inleo prompt for today. Thank you @johnuko for the referral.
