A Surreal Landscape in the Heart of Ladakh
There are many different places on earth and some are so amazing that it does not seem like they are a part of the earth. All today's photos are from the Ladakh region located in the north of India, where looking at the earth it seems as if we have arrived on Mars. Every year, when the snow of Ladakh melts, the Manali-Leh highway opens for the general public in the month of June.
Ladakh remains cut off from the rest of the world for about 4 to 5 months of winter; it can be reached only by air. I have been going to Ladakh every year since 2013. Once I went by bicycle, once by car, once by air and once by bus. I have many memories and photos of every kilometer here.
The name of the location seen in the photos is “Mourey Plains”, 460 km. On the long highway suddenly there comes a 40 km long plain amidst high mountains. Seeing this place with your own eyes provides a very unique feeling because this field is so big. There is no greenery here so life here is almost non-existent. Still, you can see Kang, Marmot and Snow Leopard here if your luck is good.
This medal is so big that huge dust storms come here every five minutes, and keep coming throughout the day. I have been a witness to this amazing incident many times. If I want to tell you more about this medal, there is a lake here which has recently been prepared by the government so that the number of animals can be increased. Now the Shepherds from the lower areas bring their animals along with their sheep and goats to these plains so that they can earn their living by eating the little grass present here.
By eating the grass of these plains and eating Pashmina, a special type of sheep grows hair, this hair is highly valued in the Indian market. And the people here, who are called Changpa, earn their living by selling sheep's hair. The local people of Ladakh provide tents for tourists to stay at night. Tourists can stay at night and have food to make their stay enjoyable.
The altitude here is 4650 meters, due to this altitude it is very cold here. June is the month of summer but the temperature here goes below zero every night. Even the water lying on the ground freezes here in June. I am in a bit of a hurry today, so that's all in today's post. See you in the next post, till then stay healthy and happy.
