Something Changed at the Maashorst!

Help! My favorite place is ruined

Years ago I always went to the Maashorst with the dogs. It was wonderful to enjoy in and around the water. I hardly ever ran into anyone there, and that made it a great place for me to be with the dogs. They could run freely, sniff in the bushes, paddle (Rowan and Myla never swam), and just enjoy being dogs. They left many footprints there together, and every walk was a success. I enjoyed the nature around me and the obvious pleasure of my dogs. Those memories were so etched in my memory that I absolutely wanted to go here again.

At first that was not possible because the Maashorst can no longer be reached on foot since our move, and we no longer had a car for more than 5 years.
However, when there was a car again, there was always something that kept it off. But it kept gnawing at a spot in my memory, the longing to be back on the Maashorst, WITH all three dogs, grew stronger and stronger.

We're living NOW

And last week, when my partner took two days off, we decided NOW was the time to give in to that desire. Yes the price of petrol is at a record high, yes the cost of living is skyrocketing… but we are living NOW. What will happen in the future is unknown. Going on holiday is not an option, and after denying ourselves almost everything for the past 8 years, it was time to really do this one little thing. One time to the Maashorst with all three dogs, and enjoy free nature there. At least we thought so!

De Maashorst changed!

It appears that the Maashorst has completely changed. Where I was used to being able to walk to the water, that was no longer possible at all ... We walked up the path where I had always walked, only to run into a large fence that was locked. That wasn't very practical, but we wouldn't have driven 30 kilometers to turn around without at least giving the dogs a paw bath.

So what do you do then? We looked for a way to get to that big pond that seemed so tempting to us from behind that big fence. And after having followed a crawl through, sneak through route, we have indeed found that possibility.

Sand Quarry

We had seen soon enough what had changed. The Maashorst is not actually a recreational area, it was to become a nature reserve, and that has indeed happened. Just different than what I expected. Traditionally, this location, near this large pond, has always been a sand quarry. In the years I've always been there with Rowan and Myla, the sand pit was inactive. But now the sand quarry has apparently been reactivated, which is why a large part has been deposited. I highly doubt whether this sand quarry has been activated to draw a large part of this pond into the nature reserve. The fence for the nature reserve, where Taurus and Exmoor ponies have been released, has been placed in front of the water. Which indicates that the water does not belong in the nature reserve. How idiotic can it be. A beautiful pond that would not be included in the nature reserve?

Early Morning has its advantages

Luckily we were so early in the morning that no work was being done yet. We were alone with the dogs there, and managed to find our way to the water. Once we get somewhere, we don't give up until we've done what we set out to do.

**And that was giving the dogs their well-deserved playtime, off the leash, in the water ... just enjoying being a dog.
**

Skipper can swim!

We now know that Myla still doesn't want to swim, we expected Lana to swim but she didn't dare ... and Skipper, he swam wonderfully. He enjoyed. The ladies in their own way too. And we enjoyed the dogs. Unfortunately this time not so much of nature ... because it was a bit less free than what I had in my memories.

So I didn't take the pictures I had hoped to be able to take. A few photos of the dogs near and in the water...that's it. I will have to look for another location where it is still untouched, and where I can enjoy with the dogs without disturbances.

Finding a place where the dogs can run free has become a difficulty here too.

Walking dogs on leash is not freedom to run and play, hope you find somewhere for your dogs soon, they do enjoy it much more.

I think walking dogs off leash has become more difficult everywhere. The world is just too crowded so there is less and less free space for animals to do their thing.

It's going to be hard to find another place like there. Thanks for stopping by!

You are right, mere looking at a dog walking or running towards you gives the chill. The other day, I was in a lonely street and removed the leash off my dog, the only guy behind me dared not pass but Bobby doesn't care about anyone. He minds his business.

People more often than not do not know how to read the temperament of the dog, friend or foe! My pitbull is over friendly, gets so excited people think he is in attack mode, alas all he wants is a little love.

Man made laws and people themselves are painful, used to let dogs run free in parks and on the beach, about 5 years ago sign posts went up!

We only have one beach available now, too many dogs at times, currently river has E.Coli so would not venture down till all clear is given.

That's so true, they end their freedom to be dogs, lol.

Thanks for stopping by! I have swam there with Rowan and Myla in the past. Not this time because the water was still very cold. Now that the sand pits are active again, it is no longer the safest location you can think of for swimming. Unfortunately!

It definitely is a pity yes! But let's hope that it will be good to go again in the future. And hopefully even more beautiful than before ... although I really always enjoyed it there very much.

Having a car is one of the great things you should have and it does not make sense without a nature car. God willing, you can have an untouched place for your dogs. Because after a while you can not go to a place that you did not think was easy, it is painful.

Sorry for the spoiler, the fun was lessened but I love the fact that there was no absolutely turning back to get a good swim for the dogs.

What breed are they?
I have a British Mastiff...

Thanks for your visit!

They are 3 different breeds, but belong all to the Shepherds.

We have Myla, the brown dog ... a Malinois girl, then there is Lana, the completely black dog, a Dutch Shepherd and there is Skipper the dog who sheds out the water of his coat, he´s a longhaired German Shepherd

My Nelson also loves the water. My big plan is to buy a SUP and go out to the water, because the summer is quite hot here.

Buying a SUP and going out on the water sounds awesome. We would love to do something like that ... but with three dogs, and the need to keep them under control it's better for us to keep both feet on the floor.

I hope you will make your dream come true!

A similar problem is in Romania too, unfortunately. But the joy you can see on dogs' faces when they take a bath in the water, is so beautiful!

Love the photos @hetty-rowan of your dogs, and the place you took them in the photos does look lovely. Sorry it wasn't as you once found it.

Love this sentence.....
'Once we get somewhere, we don't give up until we've done what we set out to do.'

Thats a great MOTTO to keep to, for sure!

That's a shame! I don't understand this fencing public land off at all. I hope you find a new spot.

I agree with all the crap going on, we need to carry on living as best we can and not get wrapped up in the psychological games in the media.

Yes! It has always been a favorite place of mine and of course, in my memories, it was much more beautiful than what it is now. I've been looking for up-to-date information on what they're doing, and it seems like it should be fine. They have cut down about 8 hectares of coniferous trees, and it seems that a swamp area will be created instead, which will then form the transition from forest to water. This is done to expand biodiversity...so it might just be worth keeping an eye on anyway.

Thanks for dropping by. !PIZZA

Well, at least they aren't ruining it by building stuff there ;)
There's a huge nature reserve near us too, it's just that you need a car (not a big van that's a rental lol) to get to the sweet spots so I'm really hoping within 1.5-2 months we will be able to get one to check it out.. Seems like a gem with all kinds of nature. Maybe you should check the Maashorst again after it's done :)

Yeah, checking it after they´re done is a great idea, I only don´t know how long it will take until they´re done. But well, we wanted to go again in 3 weeks from now. When my partner has his holidays. So, then I know if they are moving fast with the plans or that it will take quite some time.

Next time we only need to have more time, so I guess that we will leave home even earlier next time. Lol

A big van is maybe not the best idea, but a big nature reserve next door is great to have!
