Wednesday Walk challenge : Insectarium (Montreal)

On a cold and wet winter's day, I went to the Montreal Insectarium, one of the largest insect museums in North America. Since it was rebuilt in 2018 and 2019, it's really interesting to go and visit these facilities. Follow the guide 😀

The Montreal Insectarium is part of Montreal's Espace pour la vie (Space for Life), which includes the planetarium, biodome and botanical garden surrounding the Olympic Stadium built for the 1976 Summer Olympics. It's located in Maisonneuve Park, just off Sherbrooke Street in Montreal.

From the Insectarium parking lot, it's easy to see the inclined tower of the Olympic Stadium, which would normally allow the roof to be put on or taken off. This system has never worked. The problem of the Stadium's roof has been a recurring one ever since it was built. Studies are still underway to find out how it can be done, and at what cost... A never-ending subject in Montreal's municipal politics.

Here's the Montreal Insectarium which was completely rebuilt in 2018 and 2019. For the record, it was created in 1990 under the will of entomologist Georges Brossard. Its aim is to "raise public awareness of the world of insects" (source: Wikipedia).

The outdoor layout is very well done, with a garden that slopes gently down to the entrance of the building, as the first part of the permanent exhibition is located in the basement, forming a sort of anthill gallery. Children love it. No photo as it's quite dark.

The "basement" of the Insectarium also houses the room known as the Dome, where part of the chromatically sorted collection of naturalized insects is housed. There are 2 rows of 36 display cases. The effect is truly spectacular. My photo doesn't do justice to the visual effect of this room. Below are just a few of the insect specimens on display:

On the upper floor, we find ourselves in a heated greenhouse, the butterfly kingdom known as The Great Vivarium. There are plants and even a small river, with butterflies fluttering all over the place. It's a real pleasure to take one's time and admire this ballet.

There are restaurants all over the place for the residents of the premises with fruit placed on little shelves. Butterflies can feast on bananas, oranges, watermelons... and even pools of nectar 😀.

`On the floor, there are also small transparent enclosures for other insects such as beetles. There's also a long branch for Mexican leaf-cutter ants, who forage for bits of leaf to feed mushrooms, which in turn provide them with their favorite food.

Finally, a few photos of the local inhabitants, with this eye watching me from the top of a plant, or this stick insect hiding in a tree. It was really interesting to visit this place and learn more about this world we never notice, but which is all around us.

I hope you enjoyed your visit. Happy Wednesday Walk to all and enjoy getting out and discovering new places.

It's an emblematic monument of the city of Montreal (but so expensive to maintain because of the problems with its roof).
Have a wonderful day

Oh I love these places. If I am somewhere where they have one, I visit.
So fascinating to see insects and especially butterflies. Last time was when I was in New England. I found one by accident.
Thanks for sharing your walk through and more info with us. 😊
Great captures.

Very cool space. I love the shot of the beetles. Montreal Olympics were tough haha Soviets crushed us. No gold for Canada. But there was Bruce Jenner haha

Yep no gold medals for Canada... and plenty of controversy during the games (boycott of African countries, appearance of the Quebec flag...).

During the closing ceremony, the Quebec flag appeared before suddenly disappearing. Only flags of participating countries are allowed, and they must be of the same size. Here it was bigger than all the others 😀
