Wednesday Walk Challenge : Chutes du Moulin, Plaisance (Québec)
For this Wednesday Walk Challenge hosted by @tattoodjay, we're staying in the Plaisance Park as we did last Wednesday (see Zizanie-des-Marais, Plaisance (Québec)). This time we're a little further north, in a separate part of the Park called the Chutes du Moulin (Mill Falls).
On the bridge crossing the Petite Nation River... With the remnants of Storm Debby, the river flow was quite impressive. The sound of the waves was quite loud.
First, here's a map to help you locate Parc national de Plaisance. It's a 2-hour drive from Montreal, in the Outaouais region, named after the river that separates Quebec from Ontario.
Then the exact location of Chutes du Moulin, just off Highway 50, a perfect stop for a quick break.

We'll start at the Chutes du Moulin entrance, which is part of Parc de Plaisance. I believe the entrance fee is 7$CA, but as I was coming from the park's campground, it was free in my case. It's a short 1 km walk at the foot of the falls, with several tables for picnicking to the sound of the falls. Rather noisy as I passed.
As the site once housed an industrial village, North Nation Mills, several panels tell the story of the place, with photos showing the buildings of this village. Not much remains except a few stones of the former stables at the entrance of the park.
North Nation Mills is closely linked to the region's forestry industry. Logs from upstream forests were transported “free of charge” down the Petite Nation River. In 1809, the first sawmill was set up on the site, and an entire village grew up around it until it closed in 1928.
It's easy to see why the mill was built on the banks of this river. In those days, the sawmill was able to use the hydraulic power provided by the waterfall. By the 1850s, two mills were in operation. At its peak, the village had a population of 300, all linked to the company that ran the mills.
The flow of the Petite Nation river was really impressive when I passed through, due to the passage of storm Debby. And on Sunday, it was still raining... A great camping weekend* 😀
But even with a little rain, the walk is really enjoyable in a beautiful landscape with the falls and the surrounding forest. It's a good thing there are signs indicating the various buildings in the village, because there's nothing left. By the end of the activity, many of the houses had been dismantled and brought to the village of Papineauville.
Here's the picnic table I didn't get to enjoy because the rain was getting heavier.
Here we're at the bottom of the falls... normally, when the river is less turbulent, people can kayak here from Parc de Plaisance. But on this day, I don't think it's possible to make the trip, given the strength of the current.
On the way back up to the parking lot, a caterpillar was hurrying to find shelter under a leaf to protect itself from the rain. And I was quickening my pace to get back to the car to not be wet.
I hope you enjoyed the walk with me to Chutes du Moulin.
Happy Wednesday Walk Challenge to all...

I love the picture of the Nation river
It’s a beautiful one
The river was really impressive with this flow due to storm Debby.
Have a lovely day
Thanks for joining the Wednesday Walk :)
Have a great day :)
Always a pleasure, especially when I visit a place as beautiful as this one.
Have a great day too
A truly dedicated #wednesdaywalk in the coming rain 🙂 wow that river is raging with all the water from Debby. The little mill industrial town is fascinating to think about. Can you imagine living your life in one of those small company villages? Your whole life and whole world was go to work, go home, go back to work. Hard to imagine people lived like that... but they did. And some probably felt grateful they had a good job and house versus scraping out an existence on a farmstead somewhere.
life was rather difficult, as the mills were owned by wealthy English-speakers and the workers, such as sawyers and log drivers, were French-speaking. And they didn't have the same rights: no access to schools for their children, or even to church... Truly another time.
I forgot I was talking to a Québécois 😉 but I do agree it was even worse than I imagined due to the race/class issues.
Fortunately that has changed... life couldn't have been easy, especially in winter.
