Sketchbook 031 - FANART FRIDAYS - 2in1 Coffee Paintings!

Hello and Happy Friday!

My brain is mush today! Not even coffee can clear this brain fog....

Often, I find myself just going with it when drawing, I will usually create a few practice doodles, trying to work on proportions and portraits. This leads to a having a large pile of pencil sketches based off references.

It is a pretty weird part of my process, but usually, I like to go jogging after my first drawing practice session. While listening to music, I will think about whatever I was practicing and often come up with some concept for how I would like to complete it.

This drawing looked a lot better before I started painting it, due to the paper being even cheaper than the usual cheap ass printing paper I use. I never friggin' learn. Am definitely considering repainting this on either the other piece of 40x40cm board, or maybe even the huge 1x1m tile I have laying around in my drawing room.

See how the first layer of coffee made the ink melt? (my dumbass used liquid gel ink) On the upside, the coffee dried in such a way that, by going slow and putting weight on it during the painting process, I was able to make the paper keep from going all wobbly and wrinkly.

I tried to add some shading to hide the stupid melted features...not perfect but screw it, the drawing was supposed to look a little bit messed up anyways.

Except for the first layer of coffee paint, everything else was painted using a 000 detail brush. It takes forever and a day, but just tend to always go for the smallest brush I can find. No idea why. It is what it is.

With the coffee part done, it was time to add a background, something which a friend suggested. Taking their advice was a good idea!

With this one, I love the concept but really don't like the execution! I will do better next time, mistakes are good for learning.

Now, the second drawing...on slightly better paper, using not so melty ink...

I really didn't like this drawing when I first drew it. It was actually created before the first one I posted, I only decided to try painting it with coffee because I didn't care if I messed it up. (pretty much the opposite of the first one!)

As usual, I came up with the idea while jogging. The image just got stuck in my mind.

Unlike the other drawing, this one looks very clean! Might also be because I wasn't feeling frantic and rushed while drawing it. The concept was also a bit more well planned.

I liked the look of the coffee but decided to add some red to it too, I think it worked out pretty well.

Overall, I would say this one is my favourite, it is a bit creepy, but I like that kind of thing, will definitely opt for this style and method rather than the other one if I attempt more coffee portraits.

Well, that's it for today!

Till next time, much love and good vibes.

You are quite welcome! The only way to success (for me at least) seems to be via lots of failure first!

That wing with the eye in it is creepyawesome 😀

But 3/0 brushes ? That's not that small, honest..... 😁 The smallest I sell are the Reaper Miniatures 40/0 ones, especially designed for doing the pupils of the eyes on 28mm scale figures. Although the smallest that people sensibly buy are 10/0. A lot of people forget that the perfect brush would have a tiny point but a huge belly so you don't have to keep dipping back into the paint (of coffee....)

Wow, looks like you're going have to give me some tips on what to buy next time I go supply shopping 😅 The biggest issue with trying to teach yourself is, there's a lot you just don't know. You're right, the constant dipping is pretty annoying at times.
