Today I wanted to share with you how I prepare the container where my plants will go. Since two years ago, I don't know anymore if I plant in a pot or in a composter with wheels. When I finish harvesting the last plant of each box, I clean and add nutrients to the soil. I also check the wheels a bit because they rust a lot and sometimes I have to change them. This is how the empty box looks like.

Next I begin to pour compost, I say compost because it has been two years since I bought soil and I suppose that it will be almost all compost already. At the bottom I put the compost that is more complete and has organic matter still very thick. This organic matter will serve as food for the earthworms. The roots of the plants will take some time to get there. The organic matter that we compost is only vegetable matter, no meat or dairy products. They are the remains of the pruning of the plants of the terrace and the vegetable remains of what we eat at home. Also paper and cardboard that does not have ink on it.

After the first layer I put some pieces of wood. I put them in because they act as a water sponge. When I clean the soil, I have noticed that even if the soil is dry, these pieces of wood keep the humidity for a longer time. They are also useful for the compost but they take a long time to decompose.

A medida que voy limpiando la tierra la voy pasando a los dos cubos y al saco hasta que la necesite. Los cubos y el saco están llenos de lombrices que van haciendo el compost. Después de una primera capa pongo unos trozo de madera. Los pongo porqué hacen de esponja de agua. Cuando limpio la tierra, me he dado cuenta de que aunque la tierra esté seca, estos trozos de madera mantienen la humedad por más tiempo. También sirven para el compost pero tardan bastante en desahcerse.

I keep putting in a little compost and at the end I turn the bag over, so that the less composted part is at the bottom and the most composted part is at the top. I have been reusing the plastic bag for about 3 years.

At the end it looks like this. Now I wet all the soil well by soaking it. I do it so that the substrate settles well. The newspaper prevents the soil from coming out.

I let this soaked soil dry for a couple of days and then I put the last layer of fine, drier compost so that I can plant easily. Within a month the substrate will drop two or three fingers, then, before flowering I will refill with more compost.

Esta tierra empapada la dejo secar durante un par de días y entonces pongo la última capa de compost fino y más seco para poder plantar fácilmente. Dentro de un mes el sustrato bajará dos o tres dedos, entonces, antes de la floración rellenaré con más compost.
