"Confession of one's faults and shortcomings in prayer"

When supplicating to Allah Ta'ala, regarding wrongdoing and guilt towards oneself and presenting oneself as guilty and guilty in the court of God, it is certainly one of the most important reasons for the acceptance of supplication.

✿ When Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (RA) requested the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) to teach him the dua to recite in prayer, he (PBUH) told him the following dua:

«اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي ظَلَمْتُ نَفْسِي ظُلْمًا كَثِيرًا وَلَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، فَاغْفِرْ لِي مَغْفِرَةً مِنْ عِنْدِكَ».

Oh Allah! I have wronged my soul a lot and there is no one who forgives sins except You. Grant me abundant forgiveness from You.

(Sahih Bukhari: 6326, Sahih Muslim: 2705)

The same thing is revealed by considering the prayers of the prophets mentioned in the Holy Quran.

✿ Sayyiduna Adam and Hawa (peace be upon them) prayed:

﴿رَبَّنَا ظَلَمْنَا أَنفُسَنَا وَإِن لَّمْ تَغْفِرْ لَنَا وَتَرْحَمْنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ﴾.

O our Allah! We have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy on us, we shall be among the losers.”

(Al-A’raf: 23)

✿Moses (peace be upon him) prays like this:

رَبِّ إِنِّي ظَلَمْتُ نَفْسِي فَاغْفِرْ لِي.

O my Allah! I have wronged my soul, forgive me.”

(Al-Qasas: 16)

✿ Yunus (peace be upon him) calls upon the Allah Almighty in the dark like this:

لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ

"Divine! There is no god but You, Glorified are You. Indeed, I was one of the wrongdoers.”

(Al-Anbiya: 87)

✿ Syedna Khalilullah Ibrahim (peace be upon him) says while referring to the mistakes and omissions on his part:

وَالَّذِي أَطْمَعُ أَن يَغْفِرَ لِي خَطِيئَتِي يَوْمَ الدِّينِ

"And (the Lord) from whom I expect to forgive my sins on the Day of Resurrection."

(Al-Shu'ara': 82)

✿ Dua with the same meaning is also proven from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ:

اَللّٰهُمَّ أَنْتَ الْمَلِكُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، أَنْتَ رَبِّي وَأَنَا عَبْدُكَ، ظَلَمْتُ نَفْسِي وَاعْتَرَفْتُ بِذَنْبِي، فَاغْفِرْ لِي ذُنُوبِي جَمِيعًا إِنَّهُ لَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ

Oh Allah! You are the King, there is no one worthy of worship except You, You are my Lord and I am Your servant, I have wronged myself and I confess my sin, forgive all my sins because I do not sin except You. There is none who forgives.”

(Sahih Muslim: 771)

O our Allah! We acknowledge that we have wronged our souls, O our Lord! Forgive us, forgive us our shortcomings and mistakes. Ameen
