The risk of eye damage in the youth with diabetes!

Diabetes is a nasty disease and it doesn't come alone. Multiple complications follow it; some come earlier and some come at a later period. And it affects people of all ages. The harmful effects of diabetes are profound in the youth as well. According to a study, within 12 years of living with the disease, many youths are developing diabetic retinopathy, one of the many complications of Diabetes.

The study was done in the following ways:

In around 2010-2011, 517 young people with type 2 diabetes were recruited as the participants. At that time, they were with the disease for an average of 5 years. The prevalence of diabetic retinopathy among them was 13.9%.

After 7 years, in 2017-18, 420 out of 517 participants were tested again for retinopathy. This time the prevalence of retinopathy was 49%. Of them, 39% had a mild condition while 4% had a more severe form. At that time their average age was just 25 years. Those that had a severe form of retinopathy had high blood sugar along with high blood pressure. This means the sugar was not controlled.

Strict sugar control from the early stage of the disease, controlling other comorbidities and regular screening for the complications are the methods of preventing diabetic retinopathy.
