Did you know chickens lay different colored eggs?
Why do chickens lay different colored eggs? Why are eggs different colors? Why do chickens lay green eggs? Why do chickens lay blue eggs?
I get asked all of these, so I thought I would share why and the magic that is nature!
Chickens lay different colored eggs because of their genes and some cool pigments. The two main pigments responsible for eggshell colors are protoporphyrin and biliverdin. Chickens with specific combinations of genes produce eggs with different shades, such as brown, blue, green, or even pink.
We don’t see these colors in grocery stores because the chickens laying for mass production are bred for that and often produce white or brown eggs only. Mass producers in the egg industry want chickens who are not broody and are producing 1-2 eggs a day! I only get a blue or green egg every few days, so my colored egg-layers are not optimal for mass production.
If you want fun-colored chicken eggs, get your own chickens or check out your farmer’s market!

Thank you for sharing! Back home in Hungary, I can find eggs of different colors in the market. However, here in London, it is lucky to find a decent egg with the right-colored yolk.
Crazy, wonder why it's like that in London?
Thanks for sharing this fascinating insight into the world of chicken eggs and their colors! Nature truly works its magic through genetics and pigments, resulting in a stunning array of eggshell colors. It's a great reminder of the diversity of life around us.
As for my favorite eggshell color, I have to say that blue and green eggs have a special charm. They bring a unique touch to breakfast and baking! 🥚💙💚
Yes! I love the blue and green ones as well.

Saw these types of eggs in supermarket and I always used to think the eggs color were different on the basis of how they were raised and feed.
So interesting! I've had farm fresh eggs before and the taste is quite different from store bought eggs. A richer taste for sure.
