The Town of Most & Most Microbrewery

I have not been to a microbrewery for a week, and with no upcoming weekend trip on the horizon, I decided to delve into my archives for this #beersaturday. Luckily, my girlfriend and I took a trip to Most in northwest Bohemia in July, that I haven't covered yet. The town has two microbreweries, and we enjoyed sampling beers at the newer one. But before we get into the beer details, let's take a moment to appreciate Most itself—a town that has weathered significant changes, including the destruction of its Old Town.

Tenhle týden jsem nebyl v žádném minipivovaru, a ani o víkendu se nikam nechystám. A tak mi nezbylo než ponořit se do archivu. Naštěstí jsme s T. v červenci vyrazili do Mostu. A ještě jsem o tom nenapsal. V Mostu jsou minipivovary hned dva a my vyrazili do toho novějšího. Ale než dojde na pivo, pojďme si užít trochu toho Mostu. I když z toho starého nezbylo prakticky nic.

The only remarkable survivor of this purge is the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, which underwent a unique relocation process. One might call it the Assumption from a hell hole. It was quite an event—the entire church was carefully placed on a massive platform and transported nearly a kilometer (or half a mile). It might sound like a jest, but the reason behind this extraordinary move lies in Most's geographical fortune (and perhaps misfortune). The town spans one of the most significant European deposits of lignite, which led to the demolition of the old town due to mining activities.

The relocation from 1975, preceded by years of preparations, still surprises me. Considering the historical context —when representatives of various churches were often at odds with the communist regime and some people were persecuted for claiming their faith in public—it's interesting to note how great effort was invested in relocating a place of worship. The entire ride took a month, with the church moving at an average speed of less than 3 centimeters or 1 inch per minute. Snad kromě kostela Nanebevzetí Panny Marie. Ten byl totiž, jak asi víte, převezen o nějakých osm set metrů dál, aby unikl osudu zbytku Starého Mostu. Město mělo to štěstí a smůlu, že se nacházelo na jedné z nejbohatších uhelných pánví v Evropě. A tak postupně muselo ustupovat těžbě, až se stalo její obětí.

Kostel jako takový se přesunul po několika letech příprav v roce 1975. Proč tehdy komunisté investovali tolik času, energie a zdrojů do stěhování stánku Božího je mi dodnes záhadou, faktem nicméně je, že šlo o světový unikát. Kostel jel rychlostí dvou až tří centimetrů za minutu. A jak to vypadalo, se můžete podívat v tomhle videu.

We didn’t come to admire the church, though. The region, formerly known as the Moonland due to its devastated nature, faced significant challenges. Apart from widespread mining activities, several large coal power plants with no filters generated substantial pollution, causing the nearby forests to suffer extensive tree loss. Fortunately, things have changed recently. There are efforts to rejuvenate the region and make it attractive again, keeping nature in mind. Those include planting new trees and a more responsible approach whatsoever. The former lignite mine has been transformed into a lake, featuring a sea-side-like promenade.

Our main motivation for choosing Most as our destination was precisely this lake. It has been accessible to the public for only two or three years, yet it has quickly become one of the best Czech natural swimming locations with crystal-clear water. If you wonder about the Old Town or Starý Most, it used to be somewhere around the lake bank in my pictures. There are obviously no traces of it at all.

My jsme nicméně nepřijeli obdivovat kostel. Z kdysi měsíční krajiny na Mostecku se teď totiž postupně stává atraktivní region. Namísto odumřelých stromů tu byly vysazeny nové lesy, příroda dostala zelenou a vrací se sem i zvěř. Pár metrů přede mnou tu dokonce proběhla liška. No, a z povrchového dolu se stalo jezero Most s promenádou.

Právě kvůli jezeru jsme sem vyrazili, mělo by jít totiž o jedno z nejlepších a nejčistších přírodních koupališť v Česku. Otevřené bylo teprve dva nebo tři roky zpátky a voda byla opravdu křišťálově čistá, průzračná skoro jako v moři. Taky promenáda a pláže vypadaly fajn, i když T. zarytě tvrdí, že když to není u moře, nedá se tomu říkat pláž. Starý Most se rozkládal zhruba na břehu jezera, vidět by byl na poslední fotce, kdyby tam ještě byl.

The castle overlooking the lake is Hněvín. However, the current structure is merely a replica of the original Gothic castle torn down in the mid-17th century. Hněvín now functions as a hotel and upscale restaurant. We opted not to climb up the hill; laziness won over curiosity. Also, we intended to check one of the breweries, so we skipped it.

Hrad nad jezerem se jmenuje Hněvín. Ale je to jen replika gotického hradu, který byl zbořen v polovině 17. století. Dneska je tam hotel a restaurace. Do kopce se nám nechtělo šplhat, a navíc jsme chtěli jíst v pivovaru, takže vyhrála lenost a pohodlnost. Hněvín jsme vynechali.

The new town has little aesthetic appeal, mainly because it was developed during the communist era. Architecture pundits might identify a few examples of what could be considered "fine" instances of Socialist Realism. The former North Bohemian Mining Company headquarters, a state-owned entity at the time, stands out as one such example. With almost 100 meters in height, it should symbolize the significance of coal mining in communist Czechoslovakia and, presumably, the bright future of socialism.

Nový Most toho po estetické stránce nemá mnoho co nabídnout. Je to prostě komunistické město, socialistický realismus a sídliště. Odborník na architekturu by si v něm možná všiml nějakých sorela skvostů, za mě stojí za zmínku bývalé ředitelství Severočeských hnědouhelných dolů, stometrový věžák na kraji centra Mostu. Dodnes je to jedna z nejvyšších obytných a kancelářských budov v Česku.

However, the overall town atmosphere is somewhat bleak. The decline of coal mining dealt a heavy blow to a region that was once heavily dependent on it. Once a thriving town in the seventies and eighties, Most transformed into a neglected area soon after the Velvet Revolution. Nowadays, many residents find work on the German side of the border, and the town has been transforming just like its landscape in the past decade or so. And just like nature, Most is gradually recovering from its past.

Ale celková atmosféra města je taková neveselá. Kdysi bohatý region brzy po revoluci upadl do bídy, jak prestiž hornictví upadala. Dneska pracuje spousta místních v Německu a město jako takové se z minulosti vzpamatovává podobně jako příroda v jeho okolí.

On a positive note, and much to my girlfriend's amusement, local trams come in colors of the Spanish flag.

Minipivovar Most

Now, into the brewery! Because truly exploring any place in the Czech Republic is incomplete without sampling the local beers. Minipivovar (Microbrewery) Most serves as a testament to the evolving mindset of the locals. Having an upscale venue with slightly higher-priced yet excellent dishes is a departure from what one might associate with Most say two decades ago. The same goes for beer; many locals back then couldn't fathom shelling out CZK 50 ($2.25 / €2) for a pint when you could get five budget-friendly bottled beers at the nearest supermarket for the same amount. However, times are changing, and even Most now boasts a brewery to be proud of. Established in 2020, it weathered the challenges of the pandemic restrictions and continues to gain popularity. And rightly so!

A teď směle do pivovaru. Návštěva nějakého koutu naší domoviny by přeci nemohla být kompletní, kdybychom neochutnali nějaké to místní pivo. A Minipivovar Most ukazuje, jak se atmosféra v tomhle severočeském městě mění k lepšímu. Dvě dekády zpátky by se tu asi takový podnik, který si dovolí čepovat pivo za padesát korun, aktuálně ekvivalent asi pěti kuželek ve slevě z nejbližšího supermarketu, jen těžko uživil. Minimálně od roku 2020 už to ale možné je, a to přesto, že pivovar otevíral v dobách kovidových. Naštěstí přežil a těší se rostoucí oblibě. A zcela právem.

The cuisine is excellent, and even my girlfriend – a foodie to match my beer buff status – and my mom, who visited the brewery on our recommendation a month ago, agreed that it is worth a visit even if you're not particularly into beer. Fortunately, that's not my case, allowing me to share my feelings toward the local brews.

Vaří tu totiž skvěle. T. je čistokrevný foodie, k dobrému jídlu má podobný vztah jako já k dobrému pivu. A moje mamka zrovna tak. Ta pivovar na naše doporučení navštívila asi měsíc zpátky a užila si to stejně jako my. Takže i pokud nejste zrovna milovníci našeho národního nápoje, určitě se tu dobře najíte. Já pivu holduju, a tak se s vámi podělím i o své dojmy ze čtyř místních kousků.

The Beers

10° Pale Ale
Exhausted from a day of walking, and in my case, swimming (the lake was too cold for my girlfriend), we indulged in a well-deserved dinner and a proper beer tasting at the brewery. I kicked off with a smooth pale ale that teased my senses with a fruity aroma and a subtly bitter initial taste. The real bitterness (IBU 45 by the way) revealed itself after the first sip, dominating the flavor profile and intertwining with the fruity citric notes of American hops. The aftertaste left a hoppy-bitter zing – quite the wake-up call for my taste buds :)

Vyčerpáni celodenním chozením a v mém případě i koupáním (jezero bylo pro mou přítelkyni příliš studené) jsme si dopřáli zaslouženou večeři a pořádnou ochutnávku piva. Já začal desítkou pale ale s jemnou ovocnou vůní a lehce hořkým nádechem. Hořkost (IBU 45, moudří jako @bucipuci už vědí) se v plné síle projevila až s prvním douškem, kdy dominovala chuťovému profilu a prolínala se s ovocně-citronovými tóny amerického chmele. Dochuť hezky chmelově hořká. A ostrý budíček pro mé chuťové pohárky :)

11° Bohemian Lager
My girlfriend opted for a Czech-style lager to start, leaning a bit too much on the yeast side, evident in both the scent and taste. The yeast's robust presence muted the malty tones, allowing the characteristic scents of Saaz hops to take center stage. Consequently, the body carried a herbal bitterness, perhaps a tad more pronounced than intended, with the same bitter herbal notes lingering in the aftertaste.

T. začala s českou jedenáctkou. Pivo to bylo trochu moc kvasnicové, a to co do chuti i vůně. Výrazné kvasnicové aroma přehlušilo sladové tóny a nechalo vyniknout žatecký chmel. A tak byla v těle piva cítit bylinná hořkost asi trochu víc, než sládek zamýšlel. Bylinky a chmel doznívaly také v ocasu piva.

9° Sour
Sours are the go-to summer brews these days, and I've developed a taste for them. This particular one was exceptionally fruity, with cranberries taking the lead in both aroma and body. As a true sour, it boasted an intense fruity acidity. With a lower alcohol content and a perfect foam, it made for an excellent summer drink. Though I can't see downing three in a row – that would leave me feeling as if I'd just feasted on a bag of lemons.

Kyseláče jsou u nás na vzestupu jako alternativa k osmičkám coby letním pivům. I já už jim přišel na chuť. Tenhle byl extra ovocný, dominovaly mu hlavně brusinky. A byl také řádně kyselý. S nízkým obsahem alkoholu a v tomhle případě i super pěnou je to fajn letní drink. Ale neumím si představit, že bych vypil tři za sebou. To by bylo jako sníst kilo citronů.

Milkshake Mango IPA
There was another summer special on the beer menu. This beer combined the sour style with an IPA. A quick note for those unfamiliar with sours – they employ milk fermentation alongside the usual beer yeast, allowing them to achieve extreme acidity. This beer, therefore, is a fusion of two extremes – the bitterness of IPAs and the acidity of sours. While the initial impression is purely IPA on the nose, the mango scents burst forth upon the first sip, eventually transforming into a grapefruit flavor in the aftertaste, all the while letting the bitter IPA hops reclaim dominance. The beer is a carnival of tastes, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone eager to experience an avalanche in their taste buds.

Na pivním lístku byl ještě jeden letní speciál. Tohle pivo kombinuje kyseláč a IPU. Jen na okraj pro ty, kteří sour coby pivní styl neznají neznají - krom klasických pivních kvasinek se v nich používá mléčné kvašení, díky čemuž mohou být extrémně kyselé. A tak je tohle pivo spojením dvou extrémů - hořkého stylu IPA a kyselých sourů. Zatímco vůně je čistá IPA, na prvním doušku se uvolní chuť manga, která se nakonec v dochuti promění v grepové tóny. A v tom celém dominují hořké americké chmely. Tohle pivo v sobě skrývá celý karneval chutí. Rozhodně ho doporučuju všem, kteří chtějí potrápit své chuťové buňky podobným uragánem.
