Crafts & Craft Beer – Beznoska Microbrewery, Prague

The northeastern edge of Prague belongs to various aircraft. The development of the Letňany district (which contains the Czech word for flight – “let”) was boosted by the opening of the Letov military aircraft factory in 1925 and the subsequent opening of the Letňany airport, which now serves as a civil airport for small crafts. By the way, my girlfriend and I took a flight above Prague and its surroundings in a Cessna 172N Skyhawk from there two years ago, and it was worth it – you can even try piloting it. Here's one of those taking off. I am not sure whether it is Cessna, though.

Severovýchod Prahy patří letadlům, i když to letiště, ze kterého létám nejčastěji, je samozřejmě na západě. Letňany a Kbely. Bývalá fabrika Letova, bývalé vojenské letiště, současné vojenské letiště, a k tomu vojenské muzeum. Z toho bývalého je dneska civilní letiště pro malá letadla, před dvěma lety jsme si odtamtud s T. střihli vyhlídkový let Cessnou 172N Skyhawk. Když už je stroj ve vzduchu, nechají vás pilotovat. A je to celkem fajn zážitek. Jestli je na té fotce dole Cessna, to ale nepoznám. Každopádně je to chvíli po odlepení ze země.

Just a stone's throw away, although technically in another district, there is a renowned aviation museum with a rare collection of 300 military and civil aircraft, including WWI fighters. Yes, it is not a typo – there are also plenty of WWII crafts, but the earlier generation is more exclusive. And then, there is a contemporary military base of the Czech Air Force, which is obviously not open to the public. Anyway, consider the opening part an invitation to the next post – I will take you around. This is a tad late #beersaturday review of a craft brewery nearby. Sitting on its terrace, you can enjoy sampling beers while plane spotting – the lucky ones may even see some jet fighters. And once you visit the museum, you can easily walk there – it takes about half an hour to reach Beznoska Microbrewery.

Kousek dál je už zmíněné letecké muzeum. Ve sbírkách má asi tři stovky strojů, vesměs vojenských. Včetně letadel z první světové války, které tedy vypadají spíš jako hračky. Ale tohle berte spíš jako upoutávku na další post. Ten dnešní je samozřejmě věnovaný dobrému pivu. Kousek od muzea je totiž tak trochu zašitý pivovárek Beznoska.

We discussed kid-friendliness with @alex-rourke a couple of days ago. That’s what made me choose this particular place – it is a brewery in a former kindergarten. I can imagine people who attended it as kids have returned as regulars a decade or two later. Besides, there’s a hairdresser (hence the mustache in the logo) and a small inn. The place is somewhat secluded from the main Prague tourist attractions or busy areas, so most guests are local regulars. Just like on Sunday.

Ano, to je on. Kdysi to bývala školka. Tu dneska připomíná jen název kadeřnictví v prvním patře téže budovy. A kromě pivovaru je tu i penzion. Celý podnik má hodně lokální atmosféru, takže by mě nepřekvapilo, kdyby děti, které si tu kdysi hrávaly ve školce, dneska vysedávají u půllitrů. Koneckonců, hosté se s obsluhou očividně znali. A moc přespolních sem asi nezabloudí, od sídliště Prosek je místo tak trochu odříznuté a z Vysočan je to do kopce. Lidé ze sídliště asi budou spíš chodit do nedalekého Cobolisu, no a Vysočanští mají kolem sebe pivovarů hned několik.

The interior is quite classy, reminiscent of old-school Czech brewery bars. As the day was almost summery, nobody sat inside, and the lights were dimmed, making it look even darker than it actually was.

Interiér je tak nějak typicky český, trochu retro. A protože bylo krásně, nikomu se v tmavém podniku nechtělo vysedávat. Na fotkách přitom vypadá ještě tmavší, než reálně byl.

The Beers

The day was fine, and I was in no rush, so I decided to take the beer sampling quite seriously this time, taking a sip of almost every beer Beznoska brews. I hoped to spot some rare planes too, but then I realized I couldn't tell them from the common ones, so I dedicated myself to sampling. Just for the record, this set consisted of 0.1-liter glasses; I only had one pint besides those baby beers. The glasses are likely a leftover from the kindergarten anyway - you need to start practising your beer skills early here in the Czech Republic.

Beznoska má hodně zajímavou pivní nabídku. Návštěvu můžu rozhodně můžu doporučit třeba @krakonos'ovi - nemá to daleko a obsluha umí o jednotlivých pivech i něco relevantního doplnit. Takovéhle prkénko vyjde asi na stovku, jestli se dobře pamatuju, a dá se zajímavě nakombinovat. A i když se T. směje, že na fotce to vypadá jako normální půllitry, ve skutečnosti jsou to deckové skleničky. Možná ještě pozůstatek ze školky, když si děti hrály na hospodu. Co se v mládí naučíš...

Besnoska 12°; Bohemian Lager
The right way to open a beer sampling session: proper Bohemian Lager to quench my thirst. It came with a light earthy-hoppy aroma, yet the opening was malty as the Pilsen malt is boosted with Munich malt, which is a tad more detectable. I almost wanted to rate it as too sweet, but then the bitterness kicked in – and lingered on pleasantly. As I said – a proper modern-style Bohemian Lager.

Bylo docela teplo, a tak mi pořádný český ležák bodl. Měl lehké zemitě chmelové aroma, ale začátek byl spíš sladový - plzeňskému sladu tu zdatně sekunduje mnichovský, který mi dokonce přišel trochu výraznější. Skoro jsem chtěl pivo zhodnotit jako příliš do sladova, ale pak se objevila hořkost – a příjemně držela na patře. Jak jsem řekl – pořádný český ležák moderního střihu.

Bezopice; Non-alcoholic NEIPA
I’m quite surprised this is the first time I sampled a non-alcoholic NEIPA; this style calls for it. Bezopice (“hangover-free”) is a very fruity, bittersweet brew with a soft grapefruit scent. The body is sweetish, slightly malty, and a bit sparkling. The aftertaste resembles a candy cane with hints of tropical fruits; grapefruit again felt the most detectable of them. Better than Radlers for sure!

Už jsem ochutnal spoustu nealkoholických variant různých pivních stylů, ale pokud jde o nealko NEIPU, tohle byla premiéra. Což je divné. Tenlhe styl si o to přímo říká. Bezopice je silně ovocné hořkosladké pivo s jemnou grepovou vůní. Tělo je sladké, lehce sladové a trochu perlivé. Dochuť připomíná cukrovou třtinu s náznaky tropického ovoce; grep byl opět nejvýraznější. Rozhodně lepší než radlery! Proč taky lít do piva limonádu, že?

Raspberry Sour Ale
Sour ales are emerging in the Czech Republic, and I feel we’re still looking for the right way to brew them. Just a side note – the acidity comes from lactic fermentation; it’s not about hops. To enhance it, sour berries, which dye the beer as a side effect, are usually added. In this case, I sensed sour wild raspberries and got overwhelmed upon the first sip. Once you get used to it, you can tell a fruity, almost sweet ending. As my taste buds adapted, I could even detect blueberry hints. It wasn’t hot enough for a sour ale yet, though.

Kyseláče jsou u nás na vzestupu. A přijde mi, že sládci stále ještě hledají ty nejlepší kombinace. Pokud jste tenhle styl ještě nepotkali, vězte, že ona silná acidita je důsledkem mléčné fermentace, není to o chmelu. Aby byly kyselé tóny pestřejší a výraznější, často se přidávají šťávy různých kyselých plodů, které také pivo obarví. V tomto případě jsem cítil kyselé lesní maliny, první doušek byl docela šok. Jakmile si ale zvyknete, můžete cítit ovocný, skoro až sladký závěr. Jak se moje chuťové buňky přizpůsobily, mohl jsem dokonce rozpoznat náznaky borůvek. Na kyseláč ale ale ještě asi nebylo dost horko.

Fucking Guy; DDH IPA
Okay, this Fucking Guy ain’t one to mess with. The dense bitter orange peel aroma reminded me of tasting the infamous oranges in Granada a few months ago. And then I experienced a tsunami of bitterness upon the first sip, with a large scale of bitter acids dancing over my tongue. The beer feels stronger than it likely is and leaves you with your eyes (and mouth) wide open. The aftertaste is of red oranges, mildly bitter and long-lasting. It’s truly an experience.

Fucking Guy je pořádný kus chlapa. Hustá hořká vůně pomerančové kůry mi připomněla ochutnávku pomerančů, které rostou v ulicích Granady, před pár měsíci. A pak jsem zažil tsunami hořkosti. Hned s prvním douškem, mi na jazyku začala pochodovat celá armáda hořkých esterů.. Pivo působí silněji, a nechává vás s očima (a ústy) doširoka otevřenýma. Dochuť je po červeném pomeranči, mírně hořká a dlouhotrvající. Síla, ale stojí to za to.

Aloha; IPA
Aloha IPA has little to do with Hawaii; it’s named after the hop variety that is supposedly dominant. It’s a very complex brew, though. I’d go for Bikini instead – that’s where the US tested nuclear bombs – and this IPA comes with an explosion of tastes. Of the three malts used, oat was dominant with its creamy sweet tones, accompanied by a tad of wheat malts. I felt that Galaxy dominated the sip with its pronounced bitterness; Aloha appeared in the aftertaste, more like a goodbye than a hi.

Aloha IPA má málo společného s Havají; je pojmenována po odrůdě chmele, která by měla být dominantní. Ale je to hodně komplexní pivo. Spíš bych ho nazval Bikini – tam USA testovaly jaderné bomby – a tahle IPA vám exploduje na jazyku. Z tří použitých sladů dominoval oves se krémově sladkými tóny, až do smetanova, doplněný trochou pšeničného sladu. Při doušku jsem cítil, že prim hraje Galaxy se svou výraznou hořkostí; Aloha se objevila v dochuti, spíše jako havajské rozloučení než pozdrav.

Koloušek; Wheat ale
Since I have a soft spot for wheat beers, I saved Koloušek (Fawn); it was the which taste accompanied me on my way home. The beer opened with a bit of clove and esters I failed to name, perhaps still being overwhelmed by the previous samples. Clove with a hint of cinnamon and ripe bananas took over upon sip, together with sparkly bread yeast. Ripe banana then dominated the aftertaste.

Jak určitě víte, mám slabost pro pšeničná piva. A tak jsem si nechal Kolouška až na konec. Pivo se otevřelo s trochou hřebíčku a esterů, které jsem nedokázal pojmenovat, asi že mě přechozí vzorky trochu rozhodily. Hřebíček s nádechem skořice a zralých banánů (těch opravdových, které v Česku moc nepotkáte) hrál na jazyku i při napití, spolu s chlebovým kvasem. Zralý banán pak dominoval v dochuti.
