1212 – Craft Microbrewery in the Alps
Many Czechs cannot imagine passing a winter without at least a short ski trip, and the Alps are a popular destination for us. However, I am not about to write about the winter sports. If you’re interested in the skiing part of our adventure, feel free to skip to the relevant post. Another thing Czechs are crazy about is beer. Whenever I travel across the Czech Republic, I sample local beers in one of the hundreds of local craft breweries. And since old habits die hard, I tend to do so when traveling abroad. Believe it or not, Italy is experiencing a boom in craft beers, so to stumble upon such venues is easier than ever, even in an Alpine village. As the name suggests, 1212 (pronounced as “dodici dodici” in Italian) microbrewery in Aprica is 1,212 meters above sea level. The alternative theory suggests it started brewing at 12:12 for the first time, but I prefer the altitude reference. Either way, 1212 is worth a visit.
Jak tak koukám, český rybníček moc nelyžuje. To mě docela překvapuje, protože jako národ máme pověst vášnivých lyžařů, ať už jde o sjezdovky či o běžky. Nicméně o zimních sportech psát dneska nebudu. Pivo, to naštěstí frčí i tady.
Don’t be misled by Google Maps, which shows no brewery in Aprica. Here’s a beer buff’s life hack – mapy.cz, a leading Czech map provider that is especially useful for outdoorsy people, regardless of whether you’re a skier, cross-country skier, biker, hiker, canoeist, or anything else, is also unbeatable when it comes to spotting breweries. Although 1212 is not marked on Google Maps, it cannot be missed on mapy.cz. Cheers to the brave Czech cartographers for persistently charting the breweries!

1212 is quite different from Czech microbreweries, disguised as a pizza restaurant. Which is fine with me – when in Rome, do as the Romans do. True, Aprica is not Rome, but its main street, where the brewery is, is Corso Roma. If you use anything but the Czech (beer) map, look for Pizzeria Ristorante Plona. The brewery was established in its cellars in 2006, and since its opening, it has aimed for top-notch artisan quality – hence brewing unpasteurized and unfiltered brews using top-level water. Seriously, the water comes from an altitude of some 2,000 meters. What a level!
Nu, a 1212 vypadá úplně jinak, než jsme zvyklí.
Taking advantage of the particularly poor weather one afternoon, my girlfriend and I decided to descend to the village and treat ourselves to a good lunch and some artisan brews. Pizza and beer pairing is not the first thing that would cross my mind, but why not? 1212 does not brew the style we consider the cornerstone of any brewery’s production, Bohemian Lager, anyway. Instead, we both sampled two other beer styles. By the way, the brews are named after the ski lifts above Aprica, which I fancy.
The Beers
Magnolta; Weissenbier
I know wheat beers are not really a match with pizza, but I have a fondness for them and simply had to kick off my Italian tasting with a brew of this kind. Magnolta is of a rather pale color for the style. It’s also very soft, almost giving you a sparkling sensation. Clove tones are more dominant than banana ones, and citric acids are missing. Yet, it is a refreshing beer after a day spent skiing or hiking in the mountains.
This traditional German style from Cologne boasts the typical soft fruity odor accompanied by herbal tones. I was quite surprised by the hoppy aroma that emerged in the middle of each sip since I thought this beer style was less hopped than other German beers. I haven’t sampled that many Kölsch brews to judge this one, though. I can merely say I really enjoyed it as a well-balanced and refreshing ale.
A chutnalo mi.
Torena, Belgian Tripel
Tripel is yet another style I can hardly resist sampling; not many breweries have the guts to offer it. This one aged in barrels for 40 days, and you could definitely tell it was a strong and well-aged beer upon smelling it. The initial odor and taste are intense, with distinct citric esters and hoppy spiciness. The beer feels dense and properly malted. A great brew!
Baradello, Vienna Lager
Surprisingly, it was my girlfriend and not me who ordered the only lager on the menu, and the only beer the Czechs could actually relate to - Vienna Lager is similar to what we call Semi-dark Bohemian Lager, but it uses other hop varieties and differently treated malts. Baradello is a great representative of the style, with malty caramel tones blending with the hoppy aroma in every sip, and then the roasted malt tones prevailing. This style is not my cup of tea, yet my girlfriend enjoys it.
This is #BeerSaturday challenge entry and I would like to invite @steevc to write a post in any language about beer with at least 3 pictures. I am sure that there's plenty of great breweries in the UK ;)

Looks like a nice place. I try to sample the local beers wherever I travel. I'll do another beer post some time, but I've done a fair few previously.

Nowadays people mostly like the same beauty and then go there and enjoy sitting with friends.
I'm sorry, but I don't see how this relates to my post. Anyways, if you're into beer, consider joining the #beersaturday ;) The good posts get great rewards here ;)
The tripel looks perfect!! It has been a while that I don’t drink it!! Our local breweries around here focus more in IPA, Pale ale etc…
Well, those styles are usually brewed from American hops, so it makes sense ;)
They could import some hops 😹
They indeed can :)
I actually eat pizza and rink beer very often although its one of the few times I drink beer while eating besides BBQ, the place look so cool with the wooden theme, already makes you feel like its a warm place, not necesarly but its funny how that's the image printed in my head when I see a place like that 😅✌️
It depends which beer you pair your pizza with. And which pizza ;)
It was a warm place compared to the outside - the temperature hovered around 0 °C in the village and it snowed quite a lot, as you can even tell from the outside shot ;)
By the way - if you wanted to join the #beersaturday challenge, did you know there were several craft breweris in Panama too? Like this one. Great beer-related posts get $50+ rewards, I guess one of those could cover an evening in a taproom ;)
Palabione looks unique, even in color. Definitely curious to have a sip
Maybe on an Eurotrip ;) Italy should be in your list anyways ;)
Besides, many people in Aprica spoke Spanish, with Argentinian accent. Apparently, many Argentinians come to work there.
Dodici dodici looks like a good choice when the weather is not perfect for other activities and the glass with that skiing man with beer mug is cute. I like both theories, the time 12:12 is interesting but probably it is indeed the altitude which was the inspiration for the name.
I honestly think it's the time, though. Maybe it has some other meaning in Italian we are not aware of. The truth is Aprica is a tad lower thatn 1,212 metres ;)
If you get to the Alpes, don't miss a glass of hot Bombardino too, you may like it more than (some) beers ;)
🤤
It look
Amazing
Here's a piece of advice - such generic comments wouldn't really help you to establish yourself ;)
Okay thanks a lot for the tips I would work on that
Congratulations, your post has been added to Pinmapple! 🎉🥳🍍

And every post has their own map too!
Want to have your post on the map too?
Ahh, I haven't tasted pizza for the first time but have heard of it. With this post, am already salivating and arranging for the day I gonna have a taste of it
It's the beers what matters in this post, though ;)
Speaking about beer, how about sampling some real ones for a change? There's an actual craft brewery in Nigeria, and yet nobody has ever blogged about it: https://www.baturebrewery.com
