Níké and I

I met Níké at a Union bank here in Jos, Nigeria. The scarcity of cash has not been fair to her since she arrived in Jos from Uyo. I happened to bump into her while she was having a disagreement with some people in the queue. It seemed like the security guard had allowed 5 elderly men who had just arrived at the premises to go into the bank with the support of some other individuals in the queue.

It didn't sit well with Níké, because she had been on queue for the past 4 hours and the queue was moving rather slowly coupled with the harshness of the sun. Níké said some awful things which were disrespectful. I had a different feeling about the kind of person she was with those words that came out from her mouth.

I was done with withdrawals, as I was walking down to my car Níké approached me.

Excuse me! Hello! Excuse me, she called out.

I turned back and behold it was her, in a second, I thought about what she wanted from me after the act of disrespect.

Hi, I replied with a highly faked smile.

Please, where can I get a tricycle heading to the Jos south Corpers' lodge? " she asked in a voice filled with frustration as she wiped off the sweat on her forehead with the back of her hands.

I gazed at her for a minute.

_I know you will be wondering what I was thinking. Yes I was thinking, is it the case of 419, open your mouth and answer and their charm will catch up with you. Of course that's how they do over here, create a scene to be noticed and then go ahead with their brutal plan.

After considering the risk, I pointed towards the right "Walk down to the major road, board a tricycle heading to Old airport when you get there, board another one heading to Miango Junction and then take a bike or tricycle heading to the lodge."

"Kai God! She uttered aloud as she put her hands on head, hissing and stumping the concrete flow.

Is there a problem? I asked, tilting towards her.

No! Thank you. She walked fast out of the gate and then towards the right.

I stood by my car watching her for a while. I entered my car and started it but before I got to the major road I spotted her standing there trying to board a tricycle. As I approached I was moved to help her because it was actually my route. In fact I share the same fence with them. I honked at the car twice, waving at her to enter my car.

She rushed in, Thank you so much ma.

You are welcome. I continued driving.

Sorry…My name is Níké and I am a corp member, she introduced herself.

My name is Ginika.

Settling down has been difficult for me since I arrived here, the scarcity of cash stresses me as I am having issues with my bank app…she kept talking.

I could feel the sadness in her tone. Don't worry you will be fine, if you need any help I live around the lodge, just let me know and I will try my best. Okay?

Thank you! She responded with a grateful expression.

Before she alighted we exchanged contacts. We began to communicate once in a while, afterwards our communication became more frequent and I lost the first impression I had about her.

Look at us now, it's only our names that tell us apart, we are more than friends, we've been to places which she loved, we have had mad fun together.

Some days ago she told me she would be going back to Uyo because she was done with services, I've been sad even though she promised to come as soon as possible, she also promised to look for a job here in Jos when she comes back from Uyo.

Images are mine.

Thank you for stopping by 💕

Wow...the first impression you had about her was indeed negative. No one will believe that you guys path will cross again for good and for a close friendship. Glad to know how things later turned out through your kindness towards her, now the friendship has graduated to sister relationships, such is life
Thanks for participating

Regarding your meeting with Nike - first impressions were not lasting. You showed that you are kindhearted by helping her shortly thereafter.
You exercised discernment and now you have a great friendship. It proves that a book can not always be judged by its cover. You are now so close that looking back that initial encounter will seem as though it was meant to be.

First impressions! Grace!
It's hard to reverse first impressions, it takes a kind-hearted person to give grace to such.
