Two bonkers

-.jpeg

What do you get when you add one uncle Bonkers and one @mrbonkers? It's simple really, you get two bonkers.

Last week I was told my brother and his wife are coming to visit and that means @mrbonkers will come as well. No big deal? Well *yeah it's a big fucken deal! They live 4,000 kilometres away and due to life and work commitments it's not feasible to see them much in person, the last time was a couple years ago. It's one thing doing weekly video chats and quite another seeing people in person and I feel I miss out on a lot of that little guy's life due to the distance so I'm really happy to hear he'll be down here hanging out for a while and I'm taking some time off work when they're all here to maximise the opportunity.

We've only loosely discussed what we'll be doing, mostly just hanging out, BBQ's, some kayaking (it'll be summer) and stuff like that but because my nephew loves BMX racing and downhill mountain biking so we're arranging some places where he can do that; there's a couple of race tracks nearby and they have race meetings on weekly. I'm really excited about that as I've never seen him race in real life. It means bringing his bike and racing gear on the plane but that's ok, it's a small inconvenience for a big reward. I am looking forward to sharing that experience with him.

So not much is being planned really, just some general things and even then there'll be no set plan although we'll definitely go and buy a Lego set to build together, that's a definite plan!

I'm happy I'll get to see him and for the next few months will be able to chat to him about it when we do video calls as well, it's good to have something to look forward to.

Have you ever planned anything ahead of time simply to have the benefit of something to look forward to leading up to the thing itself? Do you get more value from the thing when it's planned ahead and you get to have the excitement of the build up? Comment if you'd like.

The joy you convey in the words you write here speaks very well of you. I am sure you love them all and want to do your best for them, and yet you emphasize the joy of your nephew's visit. You have always struck me as a very busy man, even busier than me, and that's saying enough, so it's admirable that you make space for what really matters in life, our family.

Have you ever planned anything ahead of time simply to have the benefit of something to look forward to leading up to the thing itself?

Yes, when I want something with my heart I plan, insist and prepare until everything is as perfect as possible, in fact I feel that working on it guarantees that goal will come true. Happy to greet you again bro, I send you a sincere hug!...

Planning helps to make things a reality. There's a time for spontaneity of course, but some things need to be planned out to make them a reality and I like the expectation that having future events planned can bring.

How nice I have read several of your posts talking @mrbonkers and you can tell by the passion with which you talk about him how much you love him. Even if you don't see each other as much I'm sure you have a great time. You can tell he is a sportsman if he is very good at planning things and being prepared, but the best thing about life is what ends up surprising you.

It'll be good to see him on person and I know we'll have a great time no matter what we do. These formative years are so important to his progression and I like to think I add something he can build on.

There are some modeling brands with impressive detail; like https://store.killerbody.com/ and https://www.asiatees.com/ (not to advertise) since they are quite expensive, I can't afford to buy one.

But with my 3-year-old nephew I am putting together a truck with homemade parts, I build them and I put it together with him.

The expression and desire he puts into building his toy is impressive, he looks for me every week to continue with the project.

I think I'm teaching him something.

For me it is a gift to spend time with him.

greetings.

It's good to spend that time with them and yes, you're teaching him valuable lessons as well as enriching your own life through time with him. Nice work and good luck for your builds. I've done some Lego building with my nephew in the past so am looking forward to doing it again the next time I see him.

It's a pity that life circumstances means you're all so spread out. I think my parents feel the same way with their grandkids especially as they were growing up as we live a decent flight away from each other.

Yay for them being able to come down to visit! It will be glorious :D

Yeah, it's good to know my brother's and sister have pursued their goals and that's taken them to where they are but it means we all miss out on a lot. Them coming down will be great and maybe I'll get up to Cairns later next year to see them in return.

I have quite a few things like that where I really look forward to them. Sadly as I get older I feel like they are here before you know it and then gone. Then I feel like I wasted my time waiting for them to get here even though it was well worth it! It sounds like you are going to have an awesome time!

I reckon it's going to be a good time, we're all about the catch up, seeking each other so there's not a lot of pressure on to plan and organise "things to do" as such. Going to be good!

Yep, my best friend from childhood daze is coming to visit me for Thanksgiving.

He has never been to my Ranch. Looking forward to it just like You are for Mr.Bonkers. 😉

That'll be good, always nice to see and spend time with good people right? I'm sure you'll talk shit about the old days, make up some fucken lies and embellish the truth and make some more great memories; that's how it should be!

I'm glad you can rest to meet your brother in person, yes wife and, especially that you get to see your nephew. It is a very special moment.

You ask about planning, and I can answer yes. That I plan my tasks both short term, and long term (years).

Greetings.

We've only loosely discussed what we'll be doing, mostly just hanging out, BBQ's, some kayaking

This is da way. I feel like people overplan often when people come to visit to the point where we kind of lose sight of the fact that the real reason for getting together in the first place is to see the people, not to be a tour guide. I'm sure you'll have a great time. I will soon be visiting my own family for the first time in years really soon as well. it's been too long.

I'm not one who's ever had trouble coming up with something fun to do on the spur of the moment so planning everything to the nth degree has never been a thing. Sure, I plan, sometimes very strategically, but there's a time for it and a time not to.

All the best with your plans to see your family, I hope you have a great time.

This is great news, I was thrilled to read it. You are going to enjoy those days or months in a great way and yes of course plan a lot, you deserve it, so long time without seeing each other. You are going to have a great time!

In my case if I plan that kind of things, I like to do it, I get excited every step every preparation, although it is true that sometimes things happen that I don't plan and that are good and I enjoy them just as much.

Big hug Galen, I'm happy for this news!

For me, I guess it's mostly vacations. Booking flights and accommodations in advance, and planning the travel itinerary, and looking forward to the activities and trying out the local cuisines. :)

That sounds like it will be a fantastic time with a little bit of everything involved. I'm pretty sure @Mr. Bonkers will be ecstatic to have the opportunity to show you his stuff on the race track. I hope we'll see some race pics, and it doesn't even matter whether they are shitty or not lol. I wholeheartedly believe you are a great host and will keep your family well entertained with enough down time inbetween activities for copious amounts of food and comaraderie. The time leading up to the visit will be exciting as well, all leading up to the actual visit!

I had a video chat with him last night and we were talking about it. He said how excited he was to be coming here and was explaining how he is going to get his racing bike on the plane...which was interesting. He also gave me the run down on what Lego we should build and suggested we could go to the shop when he's here to get some new sets.

It's going to be good because he's the sort of kid that likes to do lots of things. It'll be hot so we'll have water fights and go to the beach (lake for kayaking) and also just hang out and heaps of other stuff. We'll make a lot of fun for sure.

Outstanding! I was wondering if his bike comes apart for transport. There must be an easy way to do it since racers travel all the time. If you could satisfy my curiosity and let us know after he arrives, that would be great. I have no clue why that interests me, but it does lol.

Yep, the easy way is to plastic wrap it and check it in as a large/bulky items. His way isn't so easy and involves it sitting on a seat next to him (with the seat belt on). Lol. I travel with guns all the time, sometimes long gun cases, and ammunition and it's surprising to see what else goes on planes, some things the passengers would never expect. A BMX bike is the least of it.

I'll probably do a post or two when they're here and may get a chance to photograph the bike as I'll be the one picking them up at the airport. I'll get back to you.

I'm glad that soon you will have the opportunity to be with your nephew and spend time together.
I remember, when my brother came with his family to his hometown a few years ago, and my nephew wanted to spend time with me (so that his parents could visit whom they had planned), we had time for ourselves.
If I hadn't made a detailed plan of activities on those days, it would have been difficult for us to achieve everything he wanted to do and see with me.

First, I took days off at the company (announced it well in advance), planned all the interesting things that would keep his attention (such as BMX descents keep the attention of Mr. B), because my brother told me that he doesn't really have an excessive interest in something new, because he is not used to innovations.
So how can he get used to it, if he doesn't have the opportunity?
So we made...
Trip to the fortress, archery, adventure park with zip line, amusement park with cars and a panorama, Zoo, terrarium, video games, 6D cinema...
A lot of these planned activities fit into our days together.
I only remember that my brother told me that my nephew slept really well in those days, as soon as he lay down in bed, he immediately fell asleep.

I was the same way, tired from chasing the kid 😀

Be careful when you follow him in activities, for their rhythm you need a lot of energy and fitness 😄
