Little sister ain't so little

Birthday's in my family tend to be rather detached affairs; Not by design, more by necessity as my family is spread far and wide across Australia and the world. There's no gathering, birthday cake and presents; Just text messages, a phone call or video chat really.

It never used to be this way of course. We'd gather, have a big lunch or dinner, offer a few gifts and hang around chatting and being a family. I think we'd do the same these days if we were all in the same location although as we age it would take on a different meaning I suppose; I actually don't like celebrating my own birthday but getting together and chillin' eating good food, some cake...Well, that's legit. We'd focus on the little ones though, my niece and nephew who I spoil relentlessly.

Today is my sisters birthday. You can see her here pictured with big bro (me) and looking pretty happy too. She's a little thing, short AF in stature, but holds an executive job for a pharmaceutical company and as far as I know does very well. She lives in Sydney, the big smoke and a long way from little old Adelaide.

She's thirteen years younger than I am and when she was a kid I did a lot of stuff a parent might do for her considering I was out of home, living with Faith, working and an adult in my own right. I sort of parented her to some degree...And still feel a little responsible for her even now. It's an odd scenario considering she is 37 years old today. My feeling that she is my little sister is hard to shake and I'm sure it frustrates her.

She messaged me a couple days ago advising she'll be here with her partner for a couple days at the end of February and wants to have a joint-birthday party with me as I turn 50 in early March. I agreed of course. I'm sure there'll be some birthday cake. [Fucking better be some!]

This photo was taken about 18 months ago just out the front of my house. Ok, not really. It was taken at Penfolds Magill Estate where we were having breakfast at the Magill Estate Kitchen. If you are here in Adelaide make sure you go here...Trust me...Seriously, just do it.

I'm pretty sure we'll grab some new pictures in a couple weeks, both of us looking older too...Well, me not her. That little bugger never seems to age!

It's difficult at times like birthdays, Christmas and special occasions as it would be nice to spend them together with family however life pushes and pulls people all over the place these days and so we rely on technology to connect. When we do get together we have a good time and make the most of it. Not much else for it I guess right?

I'm afraid the next time more than two of us will be together at the same time will be my father's funeral which is sad, but I guess the cold, hard reality of life. In 2004 my mum passed away after a battle with cancer and that brought three siblings here together for the sad occasion and subsequent celebration of her life...It was bittersweet and I assume the same will occur for my dad.

Our lives go on, inexorably linked, but separate mostly. Still, we are brothers and sister and the five of us will always be that way. I'm looking forward to seeing my sister in a few weeks.

Hug, is what I meant of course, but I think you knew that. I'll give her two on your behalf to make up for the typo. Lol.

Type amended. Lol. (My fingers weren't working that day.)

Well... I wish your sis a happy birthday as well. She still looks pretty little to me... Are my eyes playing tricks? Lol, Audie has a complex from sharing the status of short AF. I get a kick out of it, and it sounds like you do with your sis as well. I have never been big on birthdays either, nor has Audie. I guess for me, it's just another day. I have forgotten entirely that it was my birthday a number of times in my life, only to be reminded by the few people that love and care enough about me to remind me that my expiration date is coming.

I know... I'm not that old, but you never know when your day will come and I'm LUCKY AF to be alive today as it is. LOL. Anyway, happy birthday, tiny female galen-tribe-member! :D

Haha! Yeah, she's a bloody midget! Well, not really, but she's short...And annoyingly young-looking.

Birthdays are over-rated. I like celebrating other people's but when it comes to mine...Not so much. Oh, I hate that happy birthday song...Hate it. It always sounds so mournful when people sing it. I can't stand it.

I'll pass on a birthday-hug from you to my sister when I see her in later in the month.

Right on! Thank you. I love how short my girl is, partially because I am not very tall myself. Lol. ;P

Can't forget that all-important 3/4 inches of height mate...My wife is 6' tall so almost a full foot taller than Audie.

It's just like that for parents and older siblings. You always look out for the young'uns. Whenever my sister and I go out I'm looking out for her because I'm older, even though she's probably doing better in actual life than I am XD

I think unless you're like my mother birthdays just get somewhat detached as you get older. J and I are pretty lazy with our own birthdays, we'll do stuff for the kids birthdays (or at least do the catering and logistics as we are meanie parents and make the kids organise their own birthdays, and if their cousins are having birthday parties we're there), and we just text people to say happy birthday. Christmas and Easter are the only times everyone really makes the effort to gather together.

And on J's side of the family we don't even have the excuse of large distances, they're all literally less than hour's drive away (we're the splinter faction off on the other side of the river, the rest of them live closer together). They're always so busy that we often struggle to get together (though we do try because all the kids like hanging with their cousins and there are only the six of them spread across three families).

Such is life? :)

Happy birthday to your little sister :)

Yep, birthdays suck for me...I've never been into it...I mean, why would anyone else want to celebrate the moment someone popped out of someone else's vagina? What relevance does that even have years later? I don't get it, but in this I'm probably the exception not the rule as it seems people love birthdays.

I spoke to my sister this afternoon and she was talking about having some sort of celebration when she is here at the end of February as she will not be here on my actual 50th birthday...I played along but in reality I'm not keen.

I guess as one gets older it sort of loses meaning...I'll still take the presents though. Actually, that's not true...I'm not good at receiving gifts...It makes me feel awkward. Anyway, that's a whole other post I think. Lol.

Being the splinter faction sounds like something I'd like to be...It's sounds all covert and black-ops. Right up my alley! I'm jelly of you and your black-ops life. Lol.

Yeah, mum kept trying until she had a daughter...She's the baby of the bunch and usually gets treated that way. She can be feisty though, does a pretty decent job at work and is quite respected there I think. With us? well, she's the little sis and gets away with most things. Like you with your sisters, I think all of us would make sure she was well cared for.

Yeah I know right? If I didn't look so infuriatingly young 50 would seem old! Lol.

Actually, I feel 50 at times, my body got hammered in past years and I'm paying for it now...Still, I do what I can, when I can, and feel fortunate to have learned many lessons in life. The next 50 years will be pretty good...Although, unless steem prices rise I probably can only afford to live until I'm 70.

Thanks for responding, I really appreciate it.

As that's such a sweet photo. You guys must miss each other. I moved back from UK to be with my fam coz I found it hard not seeing them. Saying that, Sydney's not that far away. My other question... does she have a steem account?

Hardly a photo of me exists that couldn't be defined as sweet...

Ok, not really! Lol.

Nah, she's not on steem; Possibly no time. I don't really know why. It's just not a thing for her I guess.

I recall you were in the UK and came back to Aus. Sydney isn't as far of course and much easier to facilitate but life gets in the way I suppose. It should be good to see here here at the end of the month and whilst she's only here for a couple days we'll catch up and weave some more threads into the tapestry of life.

Thanks for commenting. I greatly appreciate it.

Yeah, I thought I used up the last of the good looks genes but it seems there were some left over for her 13 years later.

She's ok...Has a penchant for being a wine snob but she wasn't raised that way...It's a byproduct of living in Sydney. Lol.
