A time of darkness...with some light
The light faded and, because generally the lack of light means it's dark, darkness fell. I looked around and thought, it's a time of darkness, and figured I'd spend some time lurking there...with my camera.
Ok, none of that happened at all, I wanted to grab some black and white shots of my Casio G-Shock Mudmaster and thought I'd try some low light photos which came out way better in my mind than they came out in these photos but that's ok, I don't really care because I think these shots came out ok considering they were taken by someone with sub-optimal photography skills.
I had the watch in my light box but didn't turn the light-ring on for these shots as I was twiddling the dials on the camera to get the effect I wanted...or something that resembled the magnificent effect my imagination had conjured up. I changed the background from black to white (see last image) and played around with the dials to adjust the light (see image below) and at the end realised I was still a pretty shit photographer but I'd had some fun.

Every image in this post is my own.
Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III was used to capture these images.
Woah I didn't know that you're also good when it comes to photography. These images are good for advertisement!
I wouldn't say I'm good, I just play around with the camera and take a gazillion photos and hope one or two come out ok. Thanks for your comment though, I appreciate it.
I even searched for the camera that you used. Is it possible to put a lens with those camera? Do you use lenses?
Yeah, I use lenses, these photos were taken with a macro lens.
Oh that's why! It really gives more aesthetic photos when using lenses depending on your preferred shot.
Hola Felicitaciones por las fotos que marcan los detalles
Élveztem ezeket a fényképeket, és örülök, hogy tetszettek.
I think these turned out great. What you did with the second photo is awesome. In all the other pictures, the watch looks black, but it looks gray, even almost white in the second one. When I look at it more closely though, it becomes even more interesting. The top part looks white, but going down, it slowly turns gray in the middle, and then becoming black at the bottom.
That second shot, I had the watch propped up at the back as I wanted to make it look like it was floating and I had the light ring in the top of the light box turned up high to get a shadow which probably why it seems a little over exposed. I like the shot though so am pleased you called it out.
I think they came out pretty alright. Doing low light/dark stuff is HARD.
I'm having flashbacks to when my brain decided low light practice was an amazing idea and I was churning out lots of terrible low light drawings XD
It's certainly hard, but then I guess I make it harder by not educating myself on how to do it better. Maybe one day.
Experimentation is a legit way of learning things.
maybe I just say that as I have this terrible no good bad atrocious habit of lookign at tutorials on how to do something I want to do and then...ignoring it and doing my own thing based on whatever I remember from the tutorials
It's crazy how many different settings there are to play with. We were trying to get some specific colors in our photos last night and I was kind of flying blind trying to figure out how to get the best effect.
I just twiddle the dials which seems to work ok eventually although it means I get so many bad shots in the pursuit of one or two good ones. 🫣
Haha, that's awesome! Good thing digital photos are so easy to review these days!
It looks dope...
Its been so long since I had on a G-shock watch, made me realize just how aesthetic they ate with their rugged design 😂✨
I love watches and have a lot of really cool ones...but I wear my G-Shock every day and rarely the others...I love my G-Shock.
Nice watch. Nice photos. Been thinking about getting a light box myself and playing around with it for my coin photos when I post them.
I've been really happy with my light box, a gift from my partner. It's a really cheap one but have done a really good job. Having worked with it for a while now I know that when I get a new one I'll spend a little more for better features. Mine is a cheap fold up one.
That was nice of her. Sometimes cheap is good enough. I am going to start with a cheap one too. We will see where it takes me from there.
Yeah, she looks after me and tolerates me when she has to, I can be difficult at times, like most people I guess.
Seriously though, it was a cool little surprise gift but has brought so much enjoyment. I can get some cool effects with it just by using the light. Below is one I took yesterday in colour and the light on the face is the light reflecting from the light ring in the top of the light box.
Yeah that is neat. I’m gonna pull the trigger now before I change my mind.
Stop eating crayons and get it done! Lol.
haha, it is done. Arrives tomorrow.
That's the way it's done.
Oh, G-Shock :) Interesting subject to choose for photographing. Black and white settings can work wonders. The second photo is the best! And you have an Olympus camera, so you can play with the settings all day if you want :) I love different types of lenses. For some time now, I've been looking for a lens of at least 500 to 600 mm to capture the moon, but they are unbelievably expensive.
I've done shoots of my other watches as well, all with my Olympus camera...but never the moon. Like you, I don't have the right lens. Maybe someday I will.
It's just, what to buy, a car or the lens? The price is similar! :)
But having a picture of the moon that I took myself is what I really want. Looking at the wall and knowing it's my work, well, we'll see what the future brings. Right now, my wall is full of pictures of storms and water drops we took with the macro lens. I still have room for a moon picture! :) But, really, you choose interesting object for photographing, and if you have more of them...I believe, a lot of amazing pictures were already taken ;)
That sounds like a good ambition...although costly. I guess you'll determine what's right at time and go that way, I think either option will bring reward.
Here's some others I took of a few of my watches: https://peakd.com/hive-194913/@galenkp/i-like-to-watch
You took great photos! I believe you have a lot more watches, I won't even ask how many more ;) The Rolex and Mercedes are really good. The colors give great vibes and they catch my eyes first!
Thank you, I'm not much of a photographer but I try...and yeah, I have some more. 😊
we all need to learn, and I'm still not happy with not knowing how all the settings work, so I'm learning and learning.
When you learn please let me know so I can learn. 😁
For learning lessons, we need my husband 😂 Every time I'm taking photos and he's beside me, I get on his nerves because I'm always asking him which settings to use 😂. He doesn't mind helping, but when I ask for the thousandth time, I can already see the not-so-happy expression on his face 😂😂
He must be patient for sure, but if he's anything like me helping others is something he finds enjoyable so it's never a chore.
Oh, he loves to explain how all this works. Because of him and his enthusiasm for photography, two other friends started photographing 😂 I'm just the type that asks the same question a thousand times😂 Believe me, that can get on people's nerves 😂 Especially because most of the time I already know the answers, but I still need to be sure, and he knows that. 😂
Even though personally I am not a fan of watches, these G Shock watches look so beautiful and well made.
Yeah, they are.
Most important of all, have fun in the process, enjoy it. That's what matters, plus you gave different approaches to lighting!
My favorite is the second one, where there are many grays, similar to life, with its ups and downs.
Nice shots!!!
Thanks, it was an enjoyable shoot.
I'm very happy to see shots of you again in a photo shoot, soon there will be flowers for sure!
Flowers soon yeah.
I hope you had a beautiful Sunday!!! Very hot here, it will be 36 degrees....
Interesting shots 🙂
I can think of another option that I would photograph...
I would hold the watch in the sun for a minute, then take a picture of it in complete darkness, to see the fluorescent effect on the hands of the watch and the details at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o'clock
🙂
I did my Rolex like that once, I posted photos...it was four or five years ago. It came out nicely.
Good shot my brother, I see that the G-SHOCK brand watch is very good, especially the original one, of course, the price is very expensive, until now I have not been able to afford it.
They're good watches for sure, I hope one day you manage to get one if you'd like to.
