A couple of days ago I was doing some cleaning in the backyard of my house, where I have some chickens under my care. Normally these hens are in the open yard, without any restrictions, happily growing and getting fat, but if you know how birds are in general, you will know that they tend to leave their waste all over the place.

A single hen can make quite a mess, imagine 19 hens, all loose in the yard and littering all the time. Although I have a large dirt yard, the chickens also go to the concrete area I have, which I still want to remodel but with the chickens fouling, this goal becomes more and more uphill, so at least to keep it clean, I decided to make a pen to let the chickens free only in the dirt area.

Hace un par de días estuve haciendo una limpieza en el patio de mi casa, donde tengo algunas gallinas bajo mi cuidado. Normalmente estas gallinas están en el patio abierto, sin ninguna restricción, felices creciendo y engordando, pero si saben cómo son las aves en general, sabrán que suelen dejar sus desechos por todos lados.

Una sola gallina puede ensuciar bastante, imagínense 19 gallinas, todas sueltas en el patio y ensuciando a cada rato. Si bien tengo un gran patio de tierra, las gallinas también pasan al área de concreto que yo tengo, la cual aún quiero remodelar pero con las gallinas ensuciando, esta meta se vuelve cada vez más cuesta arriba, así que por lo menos para mantenerlo limpio, decidí hacer un corral para dejar a las gallinas libres solo en el área de tierra.

Before starting my work, I was feeding them, preparing their food, which is partly bean flour, yellow corn flour and rice grains, mixed with vitamins that have several supplements to help them grow well. In this case, the vitamin is seen in those yellow spots that the mixture has, which helps to enrich the food and keep them well.

Antes de comenzar mi labor estuve dándoles de comer, preparándoles su comida, que es en parte harina de frijoles, harina de maíz amarillo y granos de arroz, mezclado con unas vitaminas que tienen varios complementos para que crezcan bien. En este caso, la vitamina se ve en esas manchas amarillas que tiene la mezcla, que ayuda a enriquecer el alimento y a mantenerlas bien.

In order to make this huge corral, I bought wire mesh for corrals. At the hardware store they sell them in that standard size, so I bought 11 meters, because I measured and it was just what I needed.

Con el objetivo de hacer este enorme corral, compré tela metálica para corrales. En la ferretería las venden con esa medida estándar, así que compré 11 metros, pues medí y era justo lo que necesitaba.

Well, with my wire mesh ready, I started stretching it on the frame of one of the walls facing the patio. I had some structural tubes so I used these tubes to tie the wire mesh to.

Bien, con mi tela metálica lista, comencé a estirarla en el marco de una de las paredes que dan hacia el patio. Tenía algunos tubos estructurales así que usé a estos tubos para amarrar la tela con alambre.

Well, with my wire mesh ready, I started stretching it on the frame of one of the walls facing the patio. I had some structural tubes so I used these tubes to tie the wire mesh to.

Mientras hacía mi trabajo, algunas gallinas salieron a mi encuentro a acompañarme. Quiero pensar eso, aunque estoy seguro que lo que querían era comer.

So I took out the concentrated feed that I usually give them and served a little more to all the hens, it was almost 4 o'clock in the afternoon, so it was a good time for them to eat again. I say it was a good time because it was already 6 pm when the hens go to bed.

Por eso saqué el alimento concentrado que acostumbro a darles y les serví un poco mas a todas mas gallinas, ya eran casi mas 4 de la tarde, así que era una buena hora para que comieran otra vez. Digo que era buena hora porque ya las 6 de la tarde las gallinas se recojen para dormir.

After feeding them, I continued working, I opened some holes in the ground to fix the frame that would have the chicken coop in the front area.

There were no columns or anything, so I had to use hooks and these tubes fixed in the ground to make the coop fit properly.

Después de darles de comer, continué trabajando, abrí unos agujeros en la tierra para fijar el armazón que tendría el gallinero en el área frontal.

Allí no había columnas ni nada, así que tuve que valerme de ganchos y estos tubos fijados en la tierra para que el corral quedara bien.

The frame was ready, so I simply continued to cover the frame I had made with the wire mesh, securing the mesh with wire to keep it firmly in place.

On the dirt floor I used thick iron hooks to fix the wire mesh, so it was well stretched and fixed to the frame.

El armazón quedó listo, así que simplemente continué cubriendo con ma tela metálica el armazón que había hecho, fijando la tela con alambre para que quedara bien firme.

En el suelo de tierra usé ganchos de hierro grueso para fijar la tela metálica, así quedó bien estirada y fija en el armazón.

That's how I finished this beautiful pen for my chickens. I've been working on the roof so that they can be sheltered, but that's for another day because it was a whole process that is worth telling another day...

Así fue como terminé este corral tan bonito para mis gallinas. Estuve trabajando en el techo para que se resguarden, pero eso es para otro día porque fue todo un proceso que bien vale la pena contar otro día...

After cleaning up the construction mess, I called the chickens into the yard and gave them more food to stay there. They will be better off in the ground and won't make so much mess, because sometimes they even came into the house. They will be fine and so will I.

Después de limpiar bien el desastre de la construcción, llamé a las gallinas al interior del corral y les di mas comida para que se quedaran allí. Estarán mejor así, en la tierra y no ensuciarán tanto, porque incluso a veces entraban a la casa. Ellas estarán bien y yo también.
