Greetings, fellow artisans. I recently got to work to make a handmade lamp with a material known as mecatillo. It is a kind of rope that is not so thick, ideal for making crafts that require this type of thin rope.

Saludos, amigos artesanos. Hace poco puse manos a la obra para hacer una lámpara artesanal con un material que se conoce como mecatillo. Es un suerte de cuerda no tan gruesa, ideal para hacer manualidades que requieran de este tipo de cuerdas delgadas.

Step by step

I made this lamp using the mecatillo and other materials such as glue, rings and liquid silicone. The mold I used to make the top shape of the lamp was that of a large container, like the one you can see in the photo below.

Esta lámpara la hice utilizando el mecatillo y otros materiales como pegamento, argollas y silicón líquido. El molde que utilicé para hacer la forma superior de la lámpara fue la de un envase grande, como el que pueden observar en la foto de abajo.

The first thing I made was a circle with the mecatillo, then I continued making more circles around the central circle until I had a large disc of this material. It was as wide as the red lid of the plastic container itself. I glued almost all of the mecatillo together with glue; however, there were sections that I glued with silicone to give it more strength.

Lo primero que hice fue un círculo con el mecatillo, luego continué haciendo más círculos alrededor del círculo central hasta lograr un disco de gran tamaño de este material. Era tan ancho como la propia tapa roja del envase de plástico. Todo el mecatillo lo fijé con pegamento casi en su totalidad; sin embargo, habían secciones que las pegaba con silicón para darle más fuerza.

After I had the top cover of the lamp ready, I began to cover the plastic container with mecatillo, as this would be my mold. I wrapped the string around it, using glue to attach the strands to each other. To secure everything while it dried, I used small pieces of tape.

Después de tener lista la cubierta superior de la lámpara, comencé a cubrir el envase de plástico con mecatillo, pues este sería mi molde. Enrollé la cuerda alrededor, usando pegamento para fijar las hebras una con la otra. Para fijar todo mientras se secaba, usé pequeños trozos de cinta adhesiva.

I must clarify that this must be left to dry well, at least one night so that the mecatillo is well fixed with the form that has been given. After a night of drying, this is how the top of the lamp looked like.

Debo aclarar que esto hay que dejar que seque bien, al menos una noche para que el mecatillo se fije bien con la forma que se le ha dado. Después de una noche de secado, así quedó la parte superior de la lámpara.

In the middle part of the lamp I made three much smaller meccano discs. I glued them together using just glue.

I would hang these discs from the other pieces with small metal rings. The joints of the mecatillo can be separated a little, to allow the rings to enter, so that all the pieces can be attached.

En la parte media de la lámpara hice tres discos de mecatillo muchos más pequeños. Los pegué usando simplemente pegamento.

Estos discos los colgaría de las otras piezas con pequeñas argollas metálicas. Las uniones del mecatillo pueden separarse un poco, para permitir entrar a las argollas, así pueden sujetarse todas las piezas.

I used more rings also to create the joint at the top of the lamp, so that there would be two rings joining the small discs to the top, as you can see in the image below.

Usé más argollas también para crear la unión en la parte superior de la lámpara, de modo que serían dos argollas que unirían los discos pequeños con la parte superior, tal como pueden observar en la imagen de abajo.

Finally I made this shape, wrapping mecatillo around the thick part of the plastic container. I covered it with a lot of glue and managed to get this shape, which would be the bottom of the lamp.

Finalmente hice esta forma, enrollando mecatillo alrededor de la parte gruesa del envase de plástico. Lo cubrí con mucho pegamento y logré obtener esta forma, que sería la parte inferior de la lámpara.

I also used more rings to join this last piece with the rest of the lamp, as you can see in the image below:

También usé más argollas para unir esta última pieza con el resto de la lámpara, quedó tal como pueden ver en la imagen de abajo:

This time to talk about the electrical part. There is not much science here, you can simply buy any socket at the hardware store that is the same size as the hole your lamp has at the top. In my case I will use this one, which fits perfectly through the hole in the lamp.

Este tiempo de hablar de la parte eléctrica. Aquí no hay mucha ciencia, simplemente pueden comprar un sócate cualquiera en la ferretería, que sea del mismo tamaño del agujero que tiene su lámpara en la parte superior. En mi caso yo usaré este, que cabe perfecto por el agujero de la lámpara.

For support, I used a piece of cardboard at the bottom of the lamp cover, where the socket goes. On the other hand, I used more mecatillo to cover the rest of the socket for aesthetic reasons. I glued everything with glue, except for the socket, which I glued with silicone to the pieces of mecatillo.

Para dar soporte, usé un trozo de cartón en la parte inferior de la tapa de la cubierta de la lámpara, donde va el sócate. Por otra parte, usé más mecatillo para cubrir el resto del sócate por mera cuestión estética. Todo lo pegué con pegamento, excepto el sócate, ese sí lo pegué con silicón a las piezas de mecatillo.

Once everything was dry, the lamp was finished and ready for use. Evidently it is a hanging lamp, which can be held from the same cable, because it certainly weighs absolutely nothing.

Una vez todo secó, la lámpara quedó terminada y lista para usarse. Evidentemente es una lámpara colgante, la cual se puede sujetar de los mismos cable, pues ciertamente no pesa absolutamente nada.

To connect it to electricity, simply connect the cables of the socket to the current, following the best safety measures.

Para conectarla a la electricidad simplemente hay que conectar los cables del sócate a la corriente, siguiendo las mejores medidas de seguridad.
